With the trickle of first- and second-round pick signings turning into an avalanche of deals, the Giants are still on the sidelines. Three first-rounders and a majority of the second-rounders are already under contract, and although the Giants were pretty quick in getting everyone else locked up, there has been no word of progress on deals for either Jason Pierre-Paul or Linval Joseph.
Both Joseph, and to a greater degree Pierre-Paul, are considered “project” players who will need a fair amount of development before they play big roles on this team. With that in mind, the team faces less pressure to ensure that these guys don’t miss a practice, unlike, say, the Cowboys or Patriots who both envision (and need) substantial contributions from their first round picks.
The Giants moved quickly in getting everyone else signed (luckily for Chad Jones) and now have plenty of time to focus JPP and Linval. Given the fact that rookies don’t report early (they join the vets for the first practice on sunday, August 1st), the Giants should have plenty of time to get these deals done. After all, the first round pick sometimes signs his contract day of, on his way into the facility.
We’ll keep an eye on any contract rumbling and grumblings that leak out as this weekend draws nearer. If they’re not both signed by Saturday, this non-news issue might become newsworthy…

*GASP!*
told ya…
No reason to believe that either are ****. However usually if a draft pick misses part/all of camp they have a terrible rookie year. We’ll pretty much know by Monday if we can count on either to contribute in 2010.
Not to hijack a thread of this import… but…
— AP never got a contract. I’m assuming he couldn’t pass the physical or wanted too much money. Anyone know what happened?
— I’d like to get opinions on Rocky Bernard. My feeling is that his head isn’t in football any longer. Just strictly IMHO… but I think he gets cut.
They will sign. their contracts are pretty cookie cutter.
I think so too. Do either of them have destructive agents?
My take on the Defensive Line… assuming we keep 8.
Tuck, JPP, Cofield, Linval, Canty, Alford, Kiwi, Osi.
Notable cuts… Tolefson and Bernard. The cap hit is another nail in the Bernard coffin. $5 mil…
There is no cap or cap hit this year..
There shouldn’t be much of an issue in getting Linval Joseph’s deal done given that both picks in front of him have signed. Prediction? 4 years, $4.1M w/ $2.6 guaranteed. Jimmy Clausen, selected 2 picks later, signing for a higher number than his slot dictated could conceivably be a monkey wrench, but I doubt it.
JPP is a trickier situation. At #15, *NOBODY* near him has signed. At this point, I think McClain at #8 is the only 1st rounder to have signed until you hit Dez Bryant at #24.
Chad Jones’ race car driving skills and Osi’s hip problem and only benefit Pierre-Paul and Joseph’s prospective contracts. Maybe it will be a good thing if neither show up to camp right away; the delay will prevent them from getting hurt.

First news item: S Kenny Phillips will NOT be ready to practice on Sun. He’ll do “extended exercise” on the side for the first week.
Not saying it figures… but it figures.
That’s fine by me. No need to get the hammy pull on the first day.
EASY MONEY:
Will Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens both be fined by the NFL for a
TD celebration that they perform together?
Yes +200
LOL….bet it has something to do with a camera.
If JPP doesn’t sign before 8-1, you can likely write him off for the season
he’s already an alleged project; not being in camp day 1 would likely put him in Coughlin’s doghouse, and we all know that ain’t too good of a place to be
if he’s not in Day 1, he probably falls to 5th on the DE depth chart behind Chase Blackburn
Joseph really ought to sign quickly too — he’s the only real DT on the entire roster!!
Isnt Coefield a real DT?
Isn’t Alford?
Cofield no because he can’t stop the run and rush the passer — primarily the latter;
Alford no because he can’t stop the run and rush the passer – primarily the former – and he is coming back from a devastating knee injury likely to end his career
Canty (you didn’t ask so I know you know) is a DE
