It might seem a little too early to make a prediction on the final Giants 53-man roster, but that doesn’t ever really stop us from anything around here. Despite a 2009 campaign that failed miserably to live up to high expectations, the Giants roster doesn’t have a lot of openings, so this is more like taking a look at the roster as it stands right now.
First, the Offense:
QB- Manning, Sorgi
RB- Jacobs, Bradshaw, Johnson, Ware
FB- Hedgecock
TE- Boss, Beckum, Pascoe or Chandler
WR- Smith, Nicks, Manningham, Hixon, Hagan, Barden
OL- Beatty, Diehl, O’hara, Snee, McKenzie, Seubert, Petrus, Whimper, Koets
Offense: 25
Now, the Defense:
CB- Webster, Ross, Thomas, Johnson, DJ Johnson
S- Phillips, Rolle, Johnson, Grant, Jones
LB- Boley, Goff, Sintim, Kehl, Dillard, Blackburn, Ingram, DeOssie
DE- Tuck, Kiwanuka, Umenyiora, Pierre-Paul
DT- Canty, Cofield, Joseph, Alford
Defense: 26
And of course, the Special Teams:
P- Matt Dodge
K- Lawrence Tynes (sigh…)
Special Teams: 2
Total: 53
Notable exclusions:
–Dave Tollefson: Tolly was probably hardest to keep off this list. Unspectacular, but a hard worker who is a solid role player. He’s the kind of guy who might get spun off for a sixth round pick, or might just find a way to stick around.
–Sinorice Moss: Wouldn’t be the first time I wrote him off and ate my words. But seriously, come on already.
–Gerris Wilkinson: See: Moss, Sinorice.
–Rocky Bernard: Perhaps the poster boy for the struggles of the D-line last year, Bernard is due almost $9 MM over the next three years. I would think an injury to another DT is his only hope of sticking around for the 2010 campaign.
–Adrian Tracy: Yes, I know it probably seems silly to have Kenny Ingram on there while leaving off Wilkinson and 6th round pick Adrian Tracy. But he’s a sixth round pick making the transition from DE, and sounds like a ready made practice squad candidate.
–Kevin Boothe: With Seubert and Petrus as depth on the interior of the offensive line, Boothe was the odd man out.
–Andre Brown: Originally I had him on the list, and the Giants carrying five running backs due to Jacobs’ and Bradshaw’s injuries. But then I realized I had left Hedgecock off the list. Still wouldn’t be surprised to see the Giants find a way to carry 5 RB’s, whether it’s Andre Brown or someone else. As it is, I’m surprised there is only 5 running backs on the 80-man.
Notes:
-Rhett Bomar: Originally, I had him in there, but the list hit 54 and he was the unfortunate victim. Putting Bomar on the roster only makes sense if you’re convinced he can play in a game if he had to. Bomar would need a real good preseason to prove that, but the Giants would probably prefer to hide him on the practice squad for another year.
-Chandler/Pascoe: Chandler and Pascoe are on relatively similar footing, and I haven’t seen enough of either guy to pick a favorite. Pascoe is more of a gritty blocker type, with Chandler possessing the kind of size you want in a target for Eli. The better player probably makes the roster, but I suppose Pascoe’s skills will fit better given Travis Beckum’s allergy to the line of scrimmage.
-4th TE?: Speaking of Travis Beckum not yet showing that ability to play traditional tight end role, it raises the possibility that the Giants carry four tight ends. Perhaps Pascoe and Chandler both make the team.
-Then again, if Seubert isn’t starting at guard, he may well get some reps at blocking TE.
-Seth Williams: Isn’t it obligatory at this point that the Giants find a small, speedy, long shot cornerback to make the roster? If Seth Williams keeps up the kind of play that earned him some praise in rookie minicamp, I might have to eat my words about the 5 cornerback thing (or DJ Johnson might be out of a job).
-Kenny Ingram: Yes, let the ridicule begin. This is where I felt like going out on a limb, and I’ve liked everything I’ve heard about the kid, and so did the Giants, keeping him close after cutting him last year. Built like an overgrown safety (think Aaron Rouse plus 15 lbs), Ingram would bring some speed to a linebacking corps that is, to put it mildly, not very fast. The clincher here will of course be special teams skills. Think it’s crazy? Maybe, but the rest of the field is, to again put it mildly, underwhelming: Gerris Wilkinson, Adrian Tracy and Micah Johnson.
-Punter: Matt Dodge versus Jy Bond. I’ll take the seventh-round NFL draft pick over the Australian Rules guy any day.
-Lawrence Tynes: Sigh……..
- Spinoffs: Last year, the Giants felt like they had an extra tight end, so they spun off Michael Matthews to the Patriots. If some kids not on the above list open some eyes, here are your candidates to be shipped out of town for a bag of peanuts.
-I’m a little uncomfortable about only 8 guys on the D-line. Perhaps instead of an 8th linebacker or 9th offensive lineman, Bernard or Tollefson sticks around.

Scores closed down. I live around the corner. Now it is called Saffire..
you live around the corner?
I didn’t think anybody lived nearby
You kidding? It’s Manhattan…there’s people living nearby everything.
Score’s used to be on 60th b/t 1st and 2nd. Now it is a new strip club called Saffire.
Good pizza place, John & Tony’s on the corner. They have awesome chx parm rolls.
cut andre brown and keep gartrell johnson? idk i think they might both stick
I thought so too, but I needed to make room somewhere. brown needs to prove he’s healed from the achilles’ surgery though…
New article up top, new article up top…
Fewell keeps saying he wants physical players. Kehl and Wilkinson are not hitters and will be gone. Michael Johnson had a horrible year and if he doesn’t rebound he’s gone. Koets is terrible..so could we see Landolt?
And why have 4 tight ends when you can also use Petrus or Seubert? Plus Gilbride doesn’t seem like he likes using TE’s except to block. I think Boss can be a more dominant player if they included him game plan.
If Andre Brown shows anything, Ware is finished. I saw Brown recently and he said he’s feeling good and ready to play.
Whimper is on the bubble, too. He can only play one position and he does not do that well. How he’s still here is a mystery to most of us. No way the Giants keep him over Boothe, who can play all the positions on the line. Jake Bender and Herb Taylor both have more upside as well.
Ingram will have a hard time making the team as a LB. Lee Campbell and Micah Johnson are both better prospects and the Giants do not want to waive either one and risk losing them. Campbell will be signed 30 seconds after his name hits the wire. He chose the Giants over six other teams, who would all re-request his services should he become available.
Although Sorgi was signed, he will have to prove his worth as a holder or else he might be gone, unless Dodge can hold. You might be looking at Bomar, who looks better every time i see him play.
I wouldn’t discount Jake Ballard beating out Pascoe or Chandler, either. The guy is huge and he can catch. Mike Pope is working with him, so he’s only going to get better.
Tollefson might be gone b/c Waufle is no longer in his corner. I have not interviewed Nunn yet, so I don’t have a feel for what he’s looking for.
Coughlin likes Adrian Tracy, but he’s learning a new position and i think they can waive him and get him back for the PS. I think…..
Tynes will be pushed by Swank this summer. Swank can bang the ball pretty good, but then again Tynes finished up strong last year, so let;s see,,,
