Giants 53-man Roster Prediction

It might seem a little too early to make a prediction on the final Giants 53-man roster, but that doesn’t ever really stop us from anything around here. Despite a 2009 campaign that failed miserably to live up to high expectations, the Giants roster doesn’t have a lot of openings, so this is more like taking a look at the roster as it stands right now.

First, the Offense:

QB- Manning, Sorgi

RB- Jacobs, Bradshaw, Johnson, Ware

FB- Hedgecock

TE- Boss, Beckum, Pascoe or Chandler

WR- Smith, Nicks, Manningham, Hixon, Hagan, Barden

OL- Beatty, Diehl, O’hara, Snee, McKenzie, Seubert, Petrus, Whimper, Koets

Offense: 25

Now, the Defense:

CB- Webster, Ross, Thomas, Johnson, DJ Johnson

S- Phillips, Rolle, Johnson, Grant, Jones

LB- Boley, Goff, Sintim, Kehl, Dillard, Blackburn, Ingram, DeOssie

DE- Tuck, Kiwanuka, Umenyiora, Pierre-Paul

DT- Canty, Cofield, Joseph, Alford

Defense: 26

And of course, the Special Teams:

P- Matt Dodge

K- Lawrence Tynes (sigh…)

Special Teams: 2

Total: 53

Notable exclusions:

–Dave Tollefson: Tolly was probably hardest to keep off this list. Unspectacular, but a hard worker who is a solid role player. He’s the kind of guy who might get spun off for a sixth round pick, or might just find a way to stick around.

–Sinorice Moss: Wouldn’t be the first time I wrote him off and ate my words. But seriously, come on already.

–Gerris Wilkinson: See: Moss, Sinorice.

–Rocky Bernard: Perhaps the poster boy for the struggles of the D-line last year, Bernard is due almost $9 MM over the next three years. I would think an injury to another DT is his only hope of sticking around for the 2010 campaign.

–Adrian Tracy: Yes, I know it probably seems silly to have Kenny Ingram on there while leaving off Wilkinson and 6th round pick Adrian Tracy. But he’s a sixth round pick making the transition from DE, and sounds like a ready made practice squad candidate.

–Kevin Boothe: With Seubert and Petrus as depth on the interior of the offensive line, Boothe was the odd man out.

–Andre Brown: Originally I had him on the list, and the Giants carrying five running backs due to Jacobs’ and Bradshaw’s injuries. But then I realized I had left Hedgecock off the list. Still wouldn’t be surprised to see the Giants find a way to carry 5 RB’s, whether it’s Andre Brown or someone else. As it is, I’m surprised there is only 5 running backs on the 80-man.

Notes:

-Rhett Bomar: Originally, I had him in there, but the list hit 54 and he was the unfortunate victim. Putting Bomar on the roster only makes sense if you’re convinced he can play in a game if he had to. Bomar would need a real good preseason to prove that, but the Giants would probably prefer to hide him on the practice squad for another year.

-Chandler/Pascoe: Chandler and Pascoe are on relatively similar footing, and I haven’t seen enough of either guy to pick a favorite. Pascoe is more of a gritty blocker type, with Chandler possessing the kind of size you want in a target for Eli. The better player probably makes the roster, but I suppose Pascoe’s skills will fit better given Travis Beckum’s allergy to the line of scrimmage.

-4th TE?: Speaking of Travis Beckum not yet showing that ability to play traditional tight end role, it raises the possibility that the Giants carry four tight ends. Perhaps Pascoe and Chandler both make the team.

-Then again, if Seubert isn’t starting at guard, he may well get some reps at blocking TE.

-Seth Williams: Isn’t it obligatory at this point that the Giants find a small, speedy, long shot cornerback to make the roster? If Seth Williams keeps up the kind of play that earned him some praise in rookie minicamp, I might have to eat my words about the 5 cornerback thing (or DJ Johnson might be out of a job).

-Kenny Ingram: Yes, let the ridicule begin. This is where I felt like going out on a limb, and I’ve liked everything I’ve heard about the kid, and so did the Giants, keeping him close after cutting him last year. Built like an overgrown safety (think Aaron Rouse plus 15 lbs), Ingram would bring some speed to a linebacking corps that is, to put it mildly, not very fast. The clincher here will of course be special teams skills. Think it’s crazy? Maybe, but the rest of the field is, to again put it mildly, underwhelming: Gerris Wilkinson, Adrian Tracy and Micah Johnson.

-Punter: Matt Dodge versus Jy Bond. I’ll take the seventh-round NFL draft pick over the Australian Rules guy any day.

-Lawrence Tynes: Sigh……..

- Spinoffs: Last year, the Giants felt like they had an extra tight end, so they spun off Michael Matthews to the Patriots. If some kids not on the above list open some eyes, here are your candidates to be shipped out of town for a bag of peanuts.

-I’m a little uncomfortable about only 8 guys on the D-line. Perhaps instead of an 8th linebacker or 9th offensive lineman, Bernard or Tollefson sticks around.

Agreed on ingram. He’s a converted safety and the depth behind boley is pretty weak.

Hoping swank beats tynes but dodge can do kickoffs.

I’d miss tollef and he’d be a great piece to a weak team.

That secondary is pretty scary if Webster returns to 07-08 form and Ross is healthy. (same with kp but I’m not worried).

Yeah, if anything Ingram has as good a shot as anybody to earn a spot, given Fewell’s clean slate.

Tollefson is one of those guys who could easily be pawned off for a bag of peanuts if they feel comfortable with what they have behind him (and everyone stays healthy). Other guys like that: Hixon/Hagan, DJ Ware, Kevin Boothe.

Does anybody else find it odd that PFT has a banner enticing you join the Freemasons blaring above their site?

lol. idk bout ingram. boley isnt that slow and i dont think sintim is slow…not fast but sure as heck not slow. as a unit the LBs got faster. id like to see if micah j makes the squad. and i like what you said bout tolly being a hard worker but has to be off the roster…makes me think of another hard worker who wears #57

    No Herb Taylor?

    Epic Fail.

No love for Shareff Rashad, Simon?

And I’m not sure your characterization of our linebacking corps being “not very fast” is quite accurate. Boley has some speed to him, as does Sintim and Kehl. Goff isn’t overly fast but can surely get the job done. If you add Ingram, or Wilkinson, whom I think will make this team, and things only get better. Either way, this group of starters is light years faster than the one we had out there over the last 2 seasons.

Btw, I’m gonna submit my entry in the Writers Round Table now because I missed that thread this weekend:

(To anyone who wants to answer),

Much has been made about Fewell’s supposed desire to run a Cover-2 defensive scheme while employing a basic 4-3 alignment for our base defense. But with the acquisitions of Rolle and Grant, the hopeful-return of Phillips and the drafting of Chad Jones, it seems as though we’ve got quite a lot of bodies at safety. Thus, wouldn’t it be better, then, to run more dime defensive packages, bringing a 3rd safety onto the field for run and mid-level pass defense? It would allow us to utilize the glut of talent at safety while also possibly shielding any lingering issues at linebacker.

    • demo3356 says:

You can only run a dime defense on obvious passing downs when the other teams has 4 WR’s on the field. Other wise the offense will man handle you and run the ball down your throat..I’m pretty sre though that we will se a 3rd Safety on the field before a 4th CB..

  7. ME Human says:

4th TE….so you think there is no chance for Ballard?

  8. KD says:

“He paid me $300 cash to have sex with him,” said the petite, curly-haired teen whose pimp brought her to LT’s hotel room. “I got it over with as quickly as I could. Afterward, all he said was turn off the TV before you leave.”

“I was a huge Giant fan,” she said, “and I used to look up to him.” She added, “I don’t want to ruin his reputation,” despite what happened in the hotel room.

“After all,” she said, “He’s in the Hall of Fame and he won two Super Bowls.”

I don’t want to ruin his life or anything… by like, you know… lying about my age… then turning him in to the police. I wouldn’t want to do anything like that.

  9. Krow says:

What we also have to figure is that injuries… major and minor… will play a role. Most teams don’t escape camp and the pre-season without a few nicks. And there’s always some poor player or two that get ‘season enders’. Sad but true…

  10. Jim StollJim Stoll says:

a little bit ago, someone – I think FF – posted a discussion with some giant insider in which he said the Giants are not done making roster moves. Looking at Simon’s 53 above and thinking about FF’s (?) post, what does everyone think of the following roster moves before the final 53 is set:

    1. trade Corey Webster for a No. 2 or 3 — corey is set to make a whopping 8M in 2011 so his longevity with the Giants seems precarious beyond this season — so far he has shown a limitation to press coverage only and PF may not run that type of D. If Ross is healthy, he and Thomas are a fine tandem. That leaves us thin behind, but with 5 safeties, maybe not as thin as we think.

    2. trade Manningham for a No. 2 or 3 — sounds crazy I know — kid has tremendous upside despite his apparent route running issues — but on this team only 2 WRs see alot of balls, the third sees some, and we have 6 WRs who can play. If Barden comes on and Beckum seriously develops, maybe Mario is more valuable as trade fodder.

    3. 9 O-linemen seems like 1 too many — my guess is Koets gets cut — but if not (and if not Whimper) could we finally see the end of McKenzie?

    4. Adrian Tracey “must” make the team. Having the ignominy of backing the first G101 HoF casualty — Dominick Randolph – I’m putting all my eggs in the Adrian Tracey basket. That means either Blackburn, DeOssie, Kehl or Goff has to go (assuming Wilks is indeed gone). But for his long snapping abilities, DeOssie is the prime candidate. Goff seems to be the safest given the state of the middle; Kehl and Blackburn about the same. Other than Alford, can anyone long snap? What about Petrus? Anyone who can rep out 45 big ones at 225 ought to be able to do anything, including long snap.

    5. I think you have to find roster room for a 5th RB. Going into 2010 with the 4 listed above will be like going into 2009 with the crew we had at safety. Andre Brown is the guy we all want; but of course that is dependent on a miraculous recovery, and even then, he will forever be a lump in the throat. But whether it’s Brown or someone else, where does that 5th spot come from? LB? O-Line? or Madison Hedgecock? That’s right, Hedgecock! I know this is crazy too, but I just don’t like a FB centered offense. Hedgecock can’t run the ball, can’t catch the ball, can’t do anything but lead block, and I believe that talent is overrated. I rather use Beckum to lead if that is the type of play we run, use a pro set with Jacobs and Bradshaw on the field together, or go 1 back. Cut Hedgecock!!

    That’s it.

    • demo3356 says:

If the Giants were going to trade either of those very young, very talented players, it would have been before or during this loaded draft, not after..Why trade them now? It is not like they drafted a really ggod CB like Haden that could replace CWebb. Also as deep as this draft was, it was relatively weak at both CB and WR, so Webster and Manningham would have ought back a real good value. Now it would be idiotic to trade either

    • s44 says:

We’re not going to trade some of our best players for picks in a pre-lockout draft.
