Wrapping Up “Day One”; Giants Select Jason Pierre-Paul, Linval Joseph and Chad Jones

As per usual, Jerry Reese stood pat and took the players that fell to his slots. They’ll get a few more picks on Saturday to fill in some holes, but the big guns have been purchased. Let’s take a look at what Reese brought home:

Round 1- Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, USF

The Giants caused some concerns about Osi Umenyiora’s future with the pick of a DE, who they claim was the sixth prospect on their board. At the end of the day, JPP presented such a “freakish” athletic specimen that Reese could not ignore what he could mean to the future of the Giants, a team that centers its defensive philosophy on the pass rush. He should ease his way into the four-deep DE rotation, which means Dave Tollefson is the one who should be worried; not Umenyiora.

Round 2- Linval Joseph, DT, ECU

The Giants replenished a defensive interior that was extremely soft last year with a monstrous, nose-tackle type of player. He’ll have to compete with Barry Cofield (no slouch) for playing time, but this guy has the raw size to contribute relatively quickly at the next level. The Giants, who didn’t like any MLB’s once Rolando McClain came off the board, will hope that Linval’s presence will make life easier for Jon Goff next year.

Round 3- Chad Jones, S, LSU

Corey Webster will love having an LSU alum in his defensive backfield, and Jones definitely brings a good combination of size and speed to the safety position. There’s a ton of bodies back there now, but if Kenny Phillips is ready to go opening day Jones very well might earn some time. Like JPP, this “value” pick is great for the franchise, even if it doesn’t seem like the quickest way to improve the 2010 team.

I like Chad Jones. We need a guy with dreads on this team.

  2. Samardzija says:

“When you reach for need, or or perception of need, I think you make mistakes. We’re looking for the best football player we can find. If it happens to be at a position where we have other good football players, that’s OK to. We’ll sort that out.”

So, just to be clear. This is from Bill Polian. Yes the Bill Polian who is the best GM in the game.

    See you tomorrow nobbins

Thanks for staying with G101 everyone. I’m beat. Goodnight all…

Hey… any kickers who we can grab in the late rounds that can consistently boot that puppy into the EZ?

That’s also pretty high on my wishlist… but I wouldn’t think about going there until the 6th.

I like the picks so far… I’m basing the rest of my draft on some of Samard’s rankings lol.
I’m hoping to see a CB in the 4th- Franks, Cox, or Owusu-Ansah
Then in the 5th round- LB Chaney
And in the 6th round- RB Coker
Then we can take a chance on whoever has the most potential in the 7th.

I’ll be very happy with that and I think most others should be too. If those 3 CBs are gone at our pick in the 4th then I would take RB McKnight (If he’s available) and look for a CB in the 5th or 6th instead of going after Coker.
