Giants Get Ready For Round 2 (and 3)

The first night of the 2010 NFL Draft was a crazy ride: Giants favorites Rolando McClain and CJ Spiller came off the board nice and early; the first round saw a truckload of trades; picks like Tyson Alualu and Denver’s mad grab for Tim Tebow surprised us all.

The Pick: With McClain gone, front office honchos Jerry Reese, Marc Ross and the rest of the Giants war room seemed downright giddy to land DE Jason Pierre-Paul. It sounds like JPP was #2 on the Giants board, regardless of Spiller’s (or anyone else, for that matter) availability, which indicates that the Giants didn’t feel pigeonholed into one of the apparent “need” positions.

While many Giants fans have a problem taking a “project” player who at this point is more raw athleticism than football ability, it’s hard to call this a wasted pick. It just might not be the immediate boost many expected from a 15 overall pick. But the Giants love a four-deep DE rotation, and believe that JPP is going to be a bona-fide star at some point.

How He Fits: With the murky futures of Mathias Kiwanuka and Osi Umenyiora, it’s never a bad idea to have a young, studly DE waiting in the wings…and the Giants firmly believe he will be a difference maker. Speaking of Osi Umenyiora, Jerry Reese had to pre-emptively deny that Osi is on his way out of town (although reports from Garafolo and Vacchiano indicated that Osi and some of his teammates assumed that was the case). Everyone buying Reese’s proclamations? I am….for now.

What’s Next: Only time will tell if Reese blew it or not with the Pierre-Paul selection, but there will be alot of eyes on Reese to see what he does tonight. After missing out on McClain does he find a MLB in rounds two or three? What about a DT? Personally, I think if Reese didn’t reach to fill a need in round one, he won’t do it in rounds 2 or 3.

The MLB position still has players like Donald Butler, Sean Lee and Brandon Spikes to offer. Most Giants fans probably want Lamarr Houston, but setting yourself up for that will be like the Rolando McClain debacle all over again. DT’s Terrence Cody and Brian Price will probably be available. Fringe first round talent at OT is on the board for now in Charles Brown and Roger Saffold, and the second and third rounds are deep in CB talent this year. Let’s see how Reese plays his cards.

Either way, we’ll be here at G101 all night keeping you guys updated and analyzing the picks as they come in.

Getting Haynesworth somehow would make this a much better draft.

If reese keeps up with BPA, I see him picking him an O-Linemen, I can see Brown from USC or Strafford from IU being there for us

It was good seeing LT up there last night. Almost brought a tear to my eye, I thought it to be a sure sign that we would land McClain and the torch would be passed. Fkn Raiders!! O well, I m good with JPP, and while I like Osi, if the Rams offered #33 I d part with him in a heartbeat. I m also holding out hope for a Fat Al trade at some point. That would make this draft a lot easier to swallow. Either way, Goff and co need the DT’s to take some pressure off them.

Price with the second rounder, Butler with the third!!

One thing I gotta say that is pretty off-topic. I spent last night in the Coach’s Club after taking a look at my seats (which, despite their being an absurd rip-off are incredibly good…the new stadium is pretty nice except for those Jets fans). The people who were there were way too polite. No cheering, booing, really not much of anything when the draft picks were announced. There was a small collective moan when McClain and Spiller came off the board, but not much more than that. Absolutely no reaction to the JPP pick except for everyone heading back to the cars looking puzzled.

I’m afraid the pricing of tickets and PSLs might result in the same kind of “quietude” in the good seats as has happened to the Knicks and the Yankees (although it’s getting better at Yankee Stadium) where the “suits” do more schmoozing about business than paying attention to the game and seriously cheering. Not good.

Oh, one other thing, for those of you who have tickets but aren’t members of the clubs. The food is better than standard stadium fare, but it ain’t that fabulous, at least not at this point. A good tailgate with a grill beats this stuff any day. And at $700 per ticket for the Coach’s Club it would take a lot of free cheeseburgers, fancy chicken sandwiches, exotic salads, pizza, hot dogs, burritos, and desserts to get the effective price down to where it is reasonable (you have to pay for alcoholic drinks, so the beer brigade is outta luck). But, oh yeah, I forgot, they throw in free parking. So I guess the price is justified.

The one thing that everyone with whom I spoke last night agreed upon was that at these prices no one is going to tolerate bad play for long. The owners decided to finance a great new revenue stream on the backs of their fanbase. I wonder if they know how much pressure they’ve now created for themselves? Patience for bad play, bad coaching, bad management, will be in very short supply.

wvchirodoc, sorry to be late, but congrats. Just noticed you’re a new father. Greatest thing in life. You should be flying high no matter who Reese picks. Enjoy the ride.
