GIANTS 101

It’s hard to believe it’s finally here. It might not even sink in until Goodell prances across the stage. For a lot of you G101ers out there this is going to be the longest day of work/school/sitting around that you’ve endured in a while. There’s not much left to be said, so I’ll keep this short and simple.

Things to keep an eye on:

First round pick– Obviously. But this year’s a little different, with so many options being tossed around. CJ Spiller, Rolando McClain, Mike Iupati, and Jason Pierre-Paul (among others) have all been linked to the Giants. We’ve heard that Jerry Reese wants to trade up a few spots; we’ve heard that he wants to trade down and collect extra picks. Who knows at this point. Beat man extraordinaire Mike Garafolo indicates the Giants are most interested in MLB, DE and RB. Sounds about right, but you only have one first round pick…

Osi Umenyiora and other trades– Speaking of the Giants interest in defensive ends, this is one to keep an eye on, particularly if the Giants do grab a DE in the first round. There sure has been a heck of a lot of smoke, now we’ll see if there’s fire. Multiple reports this past week indicated the Rams, Panthers, and Dolphins as interested. If Jerry Reese sees players he likes in the middle rounds, veteran role players like Domenik Hixon could become trading chips too.

Giants to draft a safety?– While the Giants not drafting a safety in the first couple rounds wouldn’t necessarily mean that Kenny Phillips is on track to return for the start of the season, an early pick spent on a safety would indicate the Giants are not all that hopeful for Kenny’s future.

The Jimmy Clausen Effect– The selection of guys like Clausen are going to play a huge role in determining who the is available to big blue at 15. For every player like Clausen that sneaks into the top half of the draft, there’s one more player pushed down towards the Giants. Other players in this category: Anthony Davis, Joe Haden, Kyle Wilson, and any defensive end the Giants don’t have eyes for.

Fat Al ‘n’ Big Ben trades– Albert Haynesworth is probably on the move before Friday night is done. Not saying the Giants will be involved (although I wouldn’t be complaining if they were), but this trade will shake up the division and the draft. Twice accused sexual assaulter Ben Roethlisberger might also be on the move, with a report this morning that the Cardinals are interested. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is reportedly high on youngster Dennis Dixon, and he’ll have to play for at least 4 weeks anyway. It looks like the Steelers may in fact ship Roethlisberger out of town if the price is right.
