Kiswani 2010 Giants Five Round Mock Draft

The New York Giants go into the 2010 draft looking to upgrade their talent level on the defensive side of the football. The team released veteran middle linebacker Antonio Pierce, signed safeties Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant, and fired defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, replacing him with former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. The team would also like to add a playmaker to the backfield on offense, and bring in young talent along the offensive line.

No team will be able to completely address all their needs and weaknesses in one draft, and teams will need to weigh their positional need and the best player available on their draft board in each round. Character and injury concerns also greatly impact a prospects draft stock in the weeks leading up to the draft. That’s where the intrigue comes into play on draft weekend, and big-time talents become available several picks, or even rounds later than expected.

ROUND 1 – RB C.J. Spiller – Clemson

An electric, elusive runner with elite speed, an unmatched second gear, and impressive receiving skills out of the backfield, C.J. Spiller would immediately give the Giants offensive attack an element it has lacked. Spiller has the ability to change a football game in the blink of an eye, and also brings gamebreaking ability as a return man. The New York Giants offense could go from good to dominant with a backfield of Spiller, Bradshaw, and Jacobs matched with an efficient passing game led by one of the league’s best passers in Eli Manning.

ROUND 2 – DT Lamarr Houston – Texas

Powerful, explosive, and aggressive Lamarr Houston is the perfect presence to complement Justin Tuck along the Giants defensive line. Houston has the motor and athletic ability to be a disruptive force from the interior, showing the instincts and leverage to consistently find his way into opposing backfields. This could be a match made in heaven for the Giants and Houston.

ROUND 3 – LB Donald Butler – Washington

Possessing fantastic athleticism, speed, and size – Donald Butler could be the perfect fit for the new Fewell defensive scheme in New York. Butler plays with good aggressiveness against the run and shows the quick feet and instincts to match up when dropping into coverage. Underrated prospect and could be a steal for the Giants with the 76th pick.

ROUND 4 – LB Dekoda Watson – Florida State

Another phenomenal athlete, Watson also brings toughness, intelligence, and a competitive attitude to a defensive front seven. Watson has very good range, can be depended on to make the open field tackle, and shows the fluidity to be an asset in coverage. He also brings value as a special teams player, where he was a difference-maker for Florida State. Impressive prospect who has the talent to become a starter at the NFL level if he can bulk up and stay healthy.

ROUND 5 – OL Shawn Lauvao  – Arizona State

A left tackle for Arizona State this past season, Lauvao projects inside at the NFL level. Lauvao is tough, strong and competitive and plays with good balance and quickness. Lauvao is versatile and played three positions along the line for Arizona State, and played them well. Lauvao is a hard worker and will benefit from working with veterans like David Diehl, Chris Snee and Shaun O’Hara. Giants would be fortunate to see Lauvao available here, and it’s looking like that’s a solid possibility going into the draft.

Does anyone have a handle on where I could get some footage of Donald Butler? Everything I read makes me wonder why we’re not talking about this kid in the first round. There’s gotta be a catch.

  2. Krow says:

    Nice… I like it.

  3. Dirt says:

    Well written Haz.

Don’t know ish about the last 4, but if what you say is true, the shaolin and the wu-tang could be dangerous.

  4. Matthew Kiernankujo says:

    Good board, too.

I’ve said it before that drafting anybody other than McClain in the first would be tantamount to drafting Butler or Spikes in the 3rd or 4th round. There’s just no way we don’t walk out of this draft with a MLB. Doesn’t have to be in the first round. But it’s gotta be by the end of Friday, IMO.

As a side note, a few tidbits on the Mock Off thus far:

    1. Every single entry us taking a defensive tackle in the second, with Lamaar Houston receiving the most nods (5), Linval Joseph in second (4) and Cam Thomas and Brian Price each getting 1.

    2. Nearly every draft that has us taking anybody other than Weatherspoon or McClain in the first follows up with us selecting a LB in the 3rd. One exception has us taking one in the 4th, while another has us not selecting one at all through the 5th.

    3. Only one person has us drafting Rolando McClain in the first. Weatherspoon has the most support (5) and C.J. Spiller brings up second (3) while Earl Thomas and Derrick Morgan also make appearances.

There’s still time to submit your 5 round mock to mkier86 AT aol DOT com. Please include player’s full name, position and college.

      • Jason Lynjay from the g101 says:

Nice work so far kujo I’m the only one that picked a lb in the 4? Lol

        • Matthew Kiernankujo says:

Looks like it! No one has one going in the 2nd, though. And I fear that Butler might have to be had in the 2nd because he might not make it to our pick in the 3rd.

  5. Jason Lynjay from the g101 says:

I like ur board haz wouldn’t be mad if that’s how it turned out. I would like the giants to get ol in the third maybe a tennat? Then spikes in the 4th? U really see us going lb back to back?

    • nick defoeSwantonBomb56 says:

Would be shocked if Spikes made it to the 4th…im thinking early 3rd at the latest. I know his combine #s stunk but tape doesnt lie, guy can ball. Prob best suited for 3-4

      • I think Spikes will go in the first half of round 3.

I could see us going LB back to back should a linebacker rated high on the Giants board be available in back to back rounds, especially if they don’t go McClain or Weatherspoon in round 1.

  6. Krow says:

kujo… you could do all sorts of stats before and after. Player… position… by round… by total….

    • Matthew Kiernankujo says:

That’s what I’m going for. I wanna get 20-25 user mocks in the Mock Off so I have a good sample size. Might bring in some of the mocks from some other sites (e.g.- Walter, NFL.com, etc.).

  7. demo3356 says:

Nice Mock Haz..I dont know anything about the 5th pick but the first 4 lok very good

  8. demo3356 says:

Missed the Osi debate yesterday as I was on the Baseball Field for 12 hours..My 2 cents is that Troy hit the nail on the head and many others were blowing things out of porportion in an effort to pat themselves on the back..Iv’e said frokm the beginging that I wouldnt trade him just t trade him but would listen to offers and if the right one came I’d take it. I would run not walk away with the 33rd pick if offered as that is gold this year. My personal gut feeling is that JR wants to move him but us too smart to deal him for less then market value, so he isnt going unless its for a top 35 pick or like a second and a 4th..

  9. KD says:

After Bell was elected the commissioner in 1946, he supervised the draft meetings. His son Upton, once a front-office executive with the Colts and the Patriots and now a radio commentator in Boston, remembers his father sitting at one end of a hotel ballroom.

“He’d announce a team and a player like a carnival barker,” Upton said. “Then he’d chalk the names on a blackboard.”

If a team was out of players it had read or heard about, it hurried through its newspaper or magazine clippings. When the Giants’ turn came up in the 27th round in 1953 at the Bellevue-Stratford in Philadelphia, the owner Wellington Mara happened to notice The Pittsburgh Courier’s list of the nation’s best African-American players.

“We’ll take Roosevelt Brown, tackle, Morgan State,” Mara announced.

idk what we are gonna do. im so anxious! i cant wait till thurs. i dnt need to tell you who im pullin for. you guys no. i really dont want a project LB! ANOTHER PROJECT LB i should say. spiller would be nice. but for me im concerned with his size and durability. its bad enough we have backs that cant stay healthy, do we need another 1? im not sayin hes inj prone im jus sayin im concerned. he is xplosive though.
