After The Donovan McNabb trade, many of the cards have been shuffled with respect to the top of the draft. That said, I have rounded up a number of mock drafts in order to see who the blog sphere has landing in New York.
Walter Football: C.J. Spiller
General manager Jerry Reese is a big believer in taking the best player on his board. With rumors circling that several teams are thinking about trading up for C.J. Spiller, it’s clear that many believe that the Clemson product is a borderline top-10 talent. If Reese agrees with this notion, he will look into drafting Spiller if he sticks with his BPA strategy.
Some may be opposed to taking a running back in the top half of the NFL Draft, especially one who won’t be able to carry the ball 20-plus times per game. But Spiller is a dynamic weapon and a home-run threat. The Giants need an explosive player like him on offense, especially with Brandon Jacobs being injury-prone and Ahmad Bradshaw unable to assume Derrick Ward’s role as a reliable pass-catcher.
NFL.com (Charles Davis): Rolando McClain
He’s awfully skilled, will strike, and has the smarts and savvy to run an NFL defense. The Giants will be fortunate if he is still available at this pick.
CBS Sports (Pete Prisco): C.J. Spiller
Sports Illustrated (Don Banks): Sean Weatherspoon
With the coveted McClain gone, the Giants shift their focus to Weatherspoon to fill their need at inside linebacker. This is higher than we’ve had Weatherspoon going in previous mocks, but he can play both inside and outside linebacker. New York is not stretching to give him a mid-round grade.
Weatherspoon and McClain seem to be consensus picks for those who think The Giants will draft for need.
The only way I see The Giants landing McClain is if they trade up. I am convinced that he will not be there at 15.
The fact that Antonio Pierce was cut so quickly tells me that The Giants have a contingency plan in place for the middle linebacker position on the roster. There are no sure things in the draft, and I am sure Reese and company had not even begun to scratch the surface of their draft preparation when Pierce was cut.
Clearly they are okay with what they have to some extent.
This leads me to believe that they will indeed select C.J. Spiller should he be available at 15.
San Fransisco is a threat to select both Spiller and Haden, and I could see Big Blue jumping them and Seattle to land one of those 2 players. San Fransisco holds most of the cards in the Spiller/Haden Sweekstakes. Both The Niners and Seahawks have 2 first round picks, meaning that they dictate the top of the draft board.
We may see Jerry Reese’s first trade up in this draft to secure one of those two players.
All that said, I would love to see Weatherspoon in Blue as well.
Should be a great day for The Giants.

First!
Sorry, never been first on a comment section I dont think. LOL! Lame but whatever, sue me.
Gotta say that I was stoked to see McClain a Giant after all the talk about him here on G101 despite being the only one who thinks he struggles shedding blocks. His stats dont lie though. However, I’m getting bummed the more I hear he wont make it to us. I’d almost rather take a OT if McClain isn’t there but I have to admit if the pick is either Witherspoon or Spiller I’ll be happy. Dont really want to trade up for either of them but however it happens I’ll be happy. In JR I trust.
I’d love it if somehow Trent Williams (Oklahoma) was our pick as well. I love that kids game.
Goodnight!
I would be ok with Trent as the 15 th pick also if the usual suspects are off the board
I agree I would rather not trade up unless it’s for a homerun ie berry or suh or McCoy or okung other than those guys I would rather stay put and go bpa at 15 or trade DOWN deep draft means more valuable picks. My board at 15 would be
d will
mcclain
Haden
spiller
there is a good chance none if these guys arethere at 15 then I would go bpa or again trade down
Simon – In response to your comment about Michael Johnson, sorry the dude is awful and was easily one of the worst starting safeties in the league last season. I can’t see how any Giants fan could possibly say anything different. Also, he’s sucked for years now so nobody is basing it off one season with CC Brown. I’ve been saying he’s a poor safety since the middle of 08 when I got fed up with him being overly aggressive in the run game and piss poor in coverage.
I know this was to Simon but I thought Johnson showed alot of promise in 07. 08 wAs also ok not good but ok last season he was horrible but who wasn’t?
I just don’t see Reese trading up for either Spiller or Haden. Maybe for McClain but even then I doubt it. I think Reese prefers to do his wheeling and dealing in the mid to late rounds. If McClain is gone before we pick we either go BPA or maybe even trade down and acquire extra picks, assuming someone is willing and looking to move up to our spot.
And every team ahead of us will fake that they’re taking who we want… in the hopes of screwing us.
Oh… for the record… if a team moves up ahead of us in the draft… whoever they pick… is probably NOT the guy we were after.
Y do u think that krow? How are u so sure that’s not the guy we wanted if the eagles moves up for mcclain? Or Haden? Or spiller?
We’re always so paranoid. Look at last year… with Maclin. Our target was Bey… everyone, even the Eagles front office, says they didn’t jump us to get Maclin. Yet to this day people still believe they did. We’re so fixated on our team thatwe think the world revolves around the NY Giants.
Can’t see Giants trading up.
Last time they did that was to grab Sinorice Moss. Yikes!!
Is Spiller the next Reggie Bush?
Pretty good; electric at times; but not an every down guy.
Is that what you want your number 1 pick to be? a sometimes player?
first pick has to be BPA at either LB, DT or OT
JR does not draft BPA he drafts NEED. Just look at his draft history.
We needed a CB and drafted Aaron Ross, we needed a S and drafted KP, we needed a WR and drafted Hakeem Nicks.
JR goes BPA in later rds and need early on. The history shows it. Everyone likes to say BPA but its just not true.
Im going by past history – unless the reincarnation of LT is hidden somewhere at Podunk State , I cant see JR giving up his precious picks to move up to take someone who would be MARGINALLY better than who we could take at our spot in the draft . We have a pretty goos spot at 15 anyway so Im feelin that we will get someone good .
As Jim Stoll pointed out we moved up to get Moss , so once bitten etc . I dont think he would want to give away that extra pick
Im going with BPA available because I dont think that any hole to fill is big enough(even LB ) that there isnt a contingency plan around to cover and give us a solution .
I still say you ALWAYS take the BPA because you want to get the best player you can who – will fingers crossed – play for your team for many years . I think this is the point that we tend to forget . Picking a good player who will play for you for years takes the strain off of your draft needs in years to come and MORE years to come than taking a player for absolute need even if that player is not the BPA on the board
Im just trying to keep folks entertained for the next few weeks. Just shooting some ideas around
Man….I was still stuck on the thread from 2 article ago, wondering where the conversation went.
Anyway, I like Spiller but, the more I think about it, I just don’t see it happening. It’s not realistic. He’ll probably be gone to begin with, and it would just be far too impulsive.
I think Spiller and McClain are both gone…
I agree. Spoon is the only one I know will be there
Spoon may not be there either. Nobody knows what Jacksonville is going to do and I was reading they could draft McClain and move Darly Smith outside or draft Spoon and keep Smith inside, where he has been pretty good.
I just made facebook friends with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad…
