New G101 Draft Series to Debut Next Week

Alabama MLB Rolando McClain has been an magnetic nexus of New York Giants draft conversation. It’s gotten to the point where every angle has been discussed and rehashed, and any conjecture about when and where he might be drafted has been speculated upon again and again.

Well, for those of you pinning your hopes on McClain restoring fierce pride to the middle of the Giants defense, yesterday’s news that he will visit with the Giants might seem like a positive sign.

However, (as noted immediately by G101 commenters wlubake and Krow), the Giants’ history of not bringing in their first round picks for a visit might incline one to view this news as a sign that the Giants are not hopelessly devoted to Rolando. After all, they didn’t tip their hand by bringing in Aaron Ross, Kenny Phillips or Hakeem Nicks for private visits.

Although it is an interesting development, I wouldn’t go so far as to cross him off the draft board just because of this.

Sure, they didn’t bring in Hakeem Nicks for a private visit, but they did visit him at multiple workouts. And McClain would be a defensive quarterback, so it’s a little more important to probe his football intellect than that of a wide receiver. Drafting at 15 instead of the late twenties, the Giants will have a deeper and more complex group of players to pick from, and this and the Anthony Davis workout are part of doing due diligence to that effect.

And although it’s probably true they would have avoided McClain like an outhouse in August if they had their hearts set on him, bringing him in for a visit is not a pure smokescreen.

BUT THE POINT HERE IS THIS: I’ve written too many damn posts about Rolando McClain (and read too many comments from people tired of reading about Rolando McClain). So I decided to do something about it.

Starting next week, Giants101 will be rolling out a series of draft articles titled (and I’m not kidding here) “Giants Draft Options Not Named Rolando McClain.”

Basically, we’re going to talk about the top players at each position, and how they may or may not fit for the Giants in the first couple of rounds. We’ll also talk generally about the Giants needs and/or approach to that position, and identify some sleepers.

And yes, it will include linebackers…so long as they’re not named Rolando McClain.

“Earl thomas’ people just confirmed he ran in the 4.3′s. Players were whooping when he finished. #ut”

And as usual Texas put on the greatest pro-day in the country:
“On another note, Berts BBQ again stole the show. Take it from me, there is nothing better than concluding a top-notch pro day featuring several elite prospects with an outstanding lunch put on by Berts BBQ.”

Must be so awesome being a scout at Texas Pro Day..

  2. KD says:

Benton, I was hoping you could use this as leverage to secure that interview that you’ve been promising, but not delivering.

I do like her, she’s always been cool with me, so I don’t mind pimping her promos.

  3. I am hearing Sergio Kindle struggled at Texas Pro Day. He came up limping after looking stiff in position drills and blamed it on a sore knee.

I guess not everyone was great.

Colt McCoy called solid but unspectacular in his workout.

Also, Earl Thomas ran much better today, but weighed in much lighted (only 202lbs)

He showed off his limp arm Im guessing. He was deadly accurate though.
Still want to bet your life savings he goer top 15 KD? lol.

I actually heard Kindle looked fluid.. Id guess we get to hear more tomorrow..

  4. KD says:

Can’t close the deal…Dan Benton is no Howard Stern. Heck Reby did Boomer and Carton…and they are idiots. But she won’t do a G101 interview.

  5. norm says:

Help me out here… just who is this McClain guy you’re going on about?

The name does seem vaguely familiar but I’m having a hard time remembering where I’ve heard it before. You wouldn’t be talking about the auld fella that lost to Obama last year, would ya?

FF55 said: “He (Boley) had a truly great game against the Falcons, but all of you guys telling me that one great game by Wilkinson against the Patriots doesn’t mean much are probably right, and you should feel the same about Boley. he hasn’t proved anything yet.”

that isn’t exactly true. Boley had three good years with the Falcons. it isn’t just one game we are basing this on. Wilkinson has had one good game with the Giants and has had three good years with the exercise bike.

  7. “The best guy in the amateur scouting/draftnik business in Mike Mayock,” the source said. “Mike does more film work then any of those other guys put together. He is the only one who has access to the NFL dub center where all the college tapes go before they get distributed to the teams. He watches hours and hours of tape. You might not always agree with his evaluations but he works hard at it and you have to respect that.”

  8. ff55- You should get off Boley’s case man, he had more than 1 good game. In those last 2 games, he looked like the only guy trying. I remember him chasing Jonathan Stewart down from behind 50 yards downfield on more than one occasion.

  9. I think an awesome sponsor for the new stadium would be JetBlue…

    Just putting that out there

Here’s the problem. This site has become too damned smart.

We start talking about draft prospects in November and by the time April rolls around, thanks to the numerous extremely good writers and posters, who come up with combinations of their own insights and analysis and the best gleanings from an outrageous number of other sources for draft data, we know just about everything about the serious prospects (and even some of the not-serious prospects) except what they like to eat (we save that for special projects like our old pal Antonio Pierce). We’ve gone back-and-forth on various prospects for months. We’ve tried to think along with Jerry Reese. We’ve tried to figure out what a conversation at a Pro Day with a player means and whether a visit to the Meadowlands is a feint or a focus. We know more about Crohn’s Disease than most people in Med School. We have become experts in the odds of full recovery from injuries both obscure (Kenny Phillips) and tragic (Andre Brown). We have found out the statistical correlation between Wonderlic scores and success in the NFL; between 40-yard times and the future of defensive tackles; and the importance of 10-yard and 20-yard splits.

The end result is that we are all driven stark-raving mad and right around April 1 are ready to run the Giants’ draft rather than simply observe it and critique the morons who clearly do not have the full benefit of our collective insight.

Personally, I now just want to know about running backs who could be dug up by Reese in the 5th or 6th round and become the next Tom Brady; about offensive linemen available in the 4th round who would be able to step in and start in 2012; and about biped kickers who can also return punts who are lurking unknow by even the cognescenti and can be grabbed with the 7th pick.

In other words, Kiper. McShay and Mayock got nothing on us. they must get bored and stir-crazy about all this too by this time. Difference is they get paid for what dopes like us do for nothing.
