When examining the 2009 draft class for The New York Giants, one player always stands out in my mind: Travis Beckum.
The reason Beckum stands out so much is that he plays a position that I did not think The Giants used in their offense, which is H- Back. The H- Back is a receiver who lines up all over the formation and the field. A good example of one is Chris Cooley.
Keeping all of this in mind, I think Beckum can be a fabulous player in The NFL if he is given an opportunity. His presence forces opponents to decide whether to stay in their current package or move to a nickel package to cover him (or use a linebacker or safety). The personnel that The Giants sport give opponents headaches as it is, and if they could add Beckum to the mix it may truly put them over the top.
Now, one area that The Giants have seemingly always struggled in is the red zone. The question here is: Can Coughlin and Gilbride see the gold mine which they are currently sitting on?
Beckum would be a very tough matchup for opponents in that area of the field and he could truly help The Giants become a more balanced team in that area. Why would Jerry Reese spend a draft pick on a player that his coaching staff would never use? I sure hope that it has been made known to the coaching staff that they are to mix it up inside the 20 and get guys like Travis Beckum some snaps.
McClain to visit New York:
According to Ralph V, Rolando McClain will be visiting The Giants this April.
No tags for this post.Rolando McClain, the player most scouts consider the top middle linebacker available in the NFL draft, will make a pre-draft visit to the Giants just 10 days before the draft begins.
McClain, in an interview on Sirius NFL Radio today, said he’ll be in the New York area on April 12 to meet with the Giants, who of course have the 15th overall pick in the April 22 draft. The Alabama linebacker also has scheduled visits with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons (who’ll pick 10th and 19th respectively) and he just finished a visit with the Miami Dolphins (who pick 12th).

I like this article. I also think that Barden, and Johnson will also help tremendously when they are on the field. Barden with his obvious size, and gartrell’s ability to hit a hole hard, like Marion barber.
I think we will def be better in the red-zone today.
Kyle
first let me congratulate you on inserting an illiteration in the title
I always like those
second, Beckum showed two things last year in his limited play time: athleticism and good hands
could he aid in the red zone?
sure
but I don’t think personnel is as big an issue as game planning down there
I don’t know how to explain it, but for whatever reason, since the TC era began, whether its been Huffnagel or Gilbride running the offense, the Giants have been a bottom third team in TD efficiency inside the red zone. thats with Plax, Tiki, Shockey, Smith, Nicks, Jacobs, Bradshaw and Boss as potential targets.
Coaching I’m thinking; not personnel
Coaching is important of course. Im just saying I think he will be a nice target, but your right it comes down mostly to killdrive sadly
So does bringing in McClain for a visit mean we won’t draft him? If I remember correctly, none of Ross, Phillips or Nicks visited the Giants before the draft.
Yes. McClain is out.
That was my first thought, and I don’t want any of you buggers taking credit for my post tomorrow morning lol
but no I don’t really think so.
I recall correctly the Giants not only didn’t visit with those guys, they didn’t even so much as talk to them.
So is the McClain visit a smokescreen to hide the fact that we don’t want him? Or is it a smokescreen to hide the fact that we DO want him from the teams that know we would never visit with him if we DID want him? Or are they just trying to fool the teams that think we think we know what they are thinking….
The possibilities are endless!
Dan and I have a crazy conjecture about this draft which we are not prepared to reveal yet based on some rumors we have heard
I am looking forward to hearing more on this!
I agree. While Beckum CAN be part of the solution, it’s really a matter of whether or not he’s given the opportunity.
I don’t think that our personnel is lacking in the necessary talent to be effective in the red zone, the team just has not gotten it done despite that.
That being said, maybe now in year two a conscious effort to actually integrate a different type of talent like Beckum will cause some new overall thinking to go into our red zone offense. That would be nice wouldn’t it? If not only does Beckum get introduced as an H-back in the red zone, but that very effort leads to a complete redesign of many of our red zone plays and suddenly we become decently effective all the time down there, whether we’re keying plays off of Beckum or not.
OK, OK, that’s not going to happen…but it’s a pleasant dream at least. ;-)
Here’s something to give more credit to Mosely’s comment today that he guarantee’s the Giants will take a LB at 15:

Note the date. Not bad.
Not bad at all…especially when you add the debunking of Kiper’s OT guess saying they’d instead add that position later in the draft.
Kyle that’s a pretty nasty tease there bud
you got me thinking though
the Giants trade their 1,2 and 3 to the Rams and take Suh
No lol
Mosely is usually good. I happen to like him because he featured one of my pieces on his site last year lol
I have to believe that the med staff has nixed McClain. Why else would they interview him?
The Spiller news + this = Spoon
is this the conspiracy???
Half of it
I hope the rest of it involves a trade down…
I hope not. That wouldn’t excite me. A first round pick who has to change position is not very exciting.
yea kyle what a tease! lol thats like someone tellin sayin i gotta talk to you bout something but ill tell you later…meanwhile youre like what the heck is it bout and you keep sayin later.lol.
i think spoon is the guy in NY due to this news bout mclain being interviewed. though. someone bought a good point up bout how reese didnt even talk to the draft picks (ross, nicks) let alone interview them. spoon is the guy
we move back, get spoon, houston and aulauga in the 2nd?????
nm that doesnt add up…
