‘Rolando McClain to Giants’ Fever Catching Hold

By Simon Garron-Caine

For over a month now, the topic has gotten so much play on G101 some have become tired of the Rolando McClain talk. It’s gotten to the point where conversations about the Giants drafting any other player in the first round are generally prefaced with “if McClain is not available.” Well, tired of this talk some may be, but we’re not the only ones who are pretty sure the Giants are hoping for McClain.

“My guess is they’re going to draft a middle linebacker. Maybe first round. I think first round.” That’s not some half baked draft pundit; that’s Giants linebacker Bryan Kehl. Kehl certainly is no authority on Jerry Reese’s draft board, but his opinion that the coaching staff/front office sees his unit as lacking is telling.

More of the same sentiment from Giants beat writer extraordinaire, Mike Garafolo:

“And Reese’s running down the list of guys on the roster and invoking the way the doubters talked about last year’s corps of wide receivers smacks of pre-draft gamesmanship to me. I’d say he’s trying to make it seem like they’re not desperate to grab McClain in the first round.”

Again, Garafolo isn’t in Reese’s war room. But he’s been covering the Giants for years, and it’s obvious to Garafolo that McClain is a perfect fit (success at a big time program, plays a position of need, smart kid/hard worker) for Reese’s first round mold. And back to those draft pundits…what do they think about this issue?

Wes Bunting of Nationalfootballpost.com, ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, Clark Judge of CBSsports.com and Daniel Jeremiah over at MoveTheSticks.com all concur that McClain will be the pick. Other mockers like Ourlads.com, Peter Schrager of Foxsports.com and the rest of CBSsports’ crew have the Giants going in other directions…..because McClain is off the board.

Interestingly, Walterfootball.com is one of the few mocks I’ve seen that has the Giants passing on an available McClain. Walter makes the case that Weatherspoon is a better fit:

“Sean Weatherspoon with Rolando McClain on the board? Am I crazy? Perhaps. But consider the following:
First, McClain is not a 4-3 inside linebacker, especially in the Tampa-2 defense Perry Fewell plans to run. McClain even said it himself; he told the media that he would prefer to stay in a 3-4. McClain, who ran a 4.7 at his Pro Day, would be somewhat of a liability in a 4-3.”

So, most draft talk will revolve around one of three things:

1) Is Rolando McClain going to be available to the Giants at 15?

2) If McClain is off the board, back to the drawing board: Dan Williams? Anthony Davis? Brian Price? Bryan Bulaga? Mike Iupati? Sean Weatherspoon? Taylor Mays? Earl Thomas? Tim Tebow?

3) The last group (a small group) will pick a player like Taylor Mays, Sean Weatherspoon or C.J. Spiller and explain intelligently why McClain may not be the best fit for the Giants.

Personally, I’m still going back and forth as to whether McClain will be there at 15. I don’t see how a ready-to-play MLB with all those skills and that reported work ethic and positional knowledge even gets out of the top ten (although some of the mocks that have him sliding to 15 are reasonable).

If he is gone, I’m of the mind to turn to the offensive linemen, although I won’t pretend to have the knowledge to single out Bryan Bulaga, Anthony Davis, Trent Williams, or Mike Iupati. I just think that these offensive linemen offer good value, should be ready to go sooner rather than later, and are less risky than a first round DT (Dan Williams, or Brian Price who has completely dropped off the map) or a Safety from a class that draws wildly different rankings.

Lastly, it’s hard for me to sit here and argue that anyone is a better fit for New York right now than Rolando McClain.

I’ve just got one thing to discuss and then I’m out of here for the morning, I’ll be back later to check if anyone responds.. This is a repost since simon killed my thunder on the last thread lol.

Can we PLEASE stop talking about the Eagles like they just won 10 straight superbowls!!???!!!? Every time a rumor about a FA or trade comes up, everyone gets worried because joe schmo is oging to the eagles and we are done for… But every time we hear a rumor of a player coming to us, it’s “oh he sucks, this isn’t going to work out”. We are a better franchise lately than the Eagles, they haven’t won anything.
Sure, they beat us when we play head-to-head but we’ve done more in the playoffs lately than they have, including a superbowl win in ‘07. The Eagles haven’t made one since the TO days and didn’t even win that one. Some of you talk about them like they are a dynasty, the early 90’s cowboys or something.
If we cut Dave Tollefson right now, everyone would say “good move, he’s trash, we won’t miss him” and then the rumor starts that the eagles will sign him and everyone says “we should’ve kept tollefson, he’s too talented to just cut like that, the eagles are getting a STUD for a low contract, wow this sucks”…
If we drafted Taylor Mays, a lot of you would say “WTF are we doing, Mays is overrated, look at his stats- he sucks” but if the Eagles draft him, it’s gonna be “Damn, our WRs better look out, Mays is a beast and hes gonna be defensive rookie of the year”
Sorry for ranting, this is just something to think about people. Not every move the Eagles make is a genius move. Don’t worry so much about what they are doing, it’s not going to make the Giants any worse. The Giants have a great GM and we should trust him to get us a few good rookies this year and put a productive team back on the field for us to watch. If the Eagles kill us both games this year, we miss the playoffs, and the Eagles win the superbowl, I’ll gladly STFU for everyone… But until then, please don’t worry so much about the Eagles.

Agreed. Everybody acts like the Eagles franchise is what we should be looking to model. I just don’t see it.

Their claim to fame is having a near monopoly on NFC Championship flops.

And their unbelievably awesome coaching staff that is full of geniuses who can do absolutely no wrong according to most on here is the same coaching staff that simply refuses to run the ball at ANY down & distance and in two consecutive tries with their season on the line last year couldn’t manage to conjure up a plan to make it appear on TV that the Eagles even belonged in the same league as the Cowboys (a team that Kevin Gilbride managed to totally embarrass TWICE).

The Eagles are nothing to look up to…unless you think our Championship rings aren’t worth as much as having the defining moment of your franchise be your star QB getting the opportunity to win the Superbowl with the ball in his hand and responding by throwing up all over himself.

People still look up to the Eagles because most of us still think of them as the team who was based around the late Jim Johnson’s defense, which was something to want to copy. Especially when we had such success with Spags D.

TROUBLED TRANSIT FIRM EYES BETTER DAYS AHEAD

ARMONK, NY – Following the kind of year that Fire Killdrive Bandwagons, Inc. just suffered through in 2009, many businesses would have closed their doors for good. The transit firm, once hugely popular amongst Giant fans, was rocked by a series of setbacks that the company CFO, norm, described as “the perfect storm.”

“For starters, we lost significant market share when a number of our old passengers became regular riders on the Sack Sheridan Line. We then lost even more after Jim Stoll’s scorched earth marketing campaign resuscitated the long moribund Can Coughlin Express. Things got so bad we even had some wacko regularly protesting outside of our main depot, scaring off customers with some gibberish about a ‘Top Ten OC.’ We were just getting hammered from all sides.”

The company’s fortunes hit rock bottom in mid December, 2009. At a time when Giant fans were paying scalpers’ prices for seats on the Sack Sheridan and Can Coughlin lines, Fire Killdrive Bandwagons, Inc. was forced to reduce its fleet size by 70% and lay off 25 drivers.

“Honestly, I was ready to throw in the towel,” norm admitted. “But our CEO, Dirt, kept the faith right through the bleakest of times. He continued to insist that the ‘Fire Killdrive’ brand was still relevant – for which he was frequently mocked by many of those loyal to the competing brands. But he stayed the course.”

It appears the CEO’s stubborn tenacity is about to be rewarded. His company received a new lease on life earlier this year when its chief competitor, the Sack Sheridan Line, relocated its operations to Florida. But the biggest shot in the arm came from the news that the Giants had hired Kevin Gilbride, Jr. to serve as the team’s offensive quality control coach.

“A second Killdrive? Manna from heaven, baby,” said norm. “No sooner had the hiring been announced then our phones started ringing off the hook. We sold out two busloads just in that first afternoon.”

Things are indeed looking up for the revitalized bus company. Fire Killdrive Bandwagons, Inc. recently purchased four new customized Super Cruisers from NovaBus of Quebec. It has also rehired ten former drivers. However, the company did have to downsize its corporate headquarters, moving from its formerly spacious digs in Clifton, New Jersey to a much smaller facility in Armonk, New York.

According to norm, “Armonk was my idea. I just liked the name; reminded me of Art Monk I mean, he was a guy who used to stymie the Giants with nearly the same regularity as Killdrive does now, so it seemed real fitting, y’know?”

Btw. Annyone out there with some Computer skillz? Im having some severe connection problems..

  5. Tebow? TEBOW?

If the Giants draft Tebow, I think my head would actually explode like the dude in the audience in that Clayton Bigsby “The Black White Supremacist” skit from Chappelle’s Show.

  6. 12dans- Thank you. Im sick of hearing about how well the Eagles are run

  7. gman24 says:

Derrick Morgan will be the NY giants number one pick

  8. I actually really like Morgan. Rare to find a defensive end who is that good against the run and can also rush the passer. He is a beast.

I don’t like him for the Giants…but I like Morgan.

    • Simon Garron-CaineSimonGC says:

I don’t think Morgan is out of the question….

      • Neither do I…I just cannot see a way they take a defensive end unless they trade Osi. Of course, I have thought that before…

The guy that I love right now is Maurkice Pouncey. He is gaining a lot of steam as the draft closes in.

Play him at left guard next season, when O’Hara finally hangs them up, Center of the future. I could see it working…

  9. gman24 says:

o comon look at the giants history at LB, the last number 1 LB is the historic L.T i dont believe we will draft an LB at number1 unless its a sure shot, with mcclain crohns and coming from a 3-4 he will not be the right away guy.

Tuck – coming off an unjury
osi – may have a come back year, BUT he is an old 28 due to injuries kiwi – he is just average
    tolly – just a backup

morgan will be the starter right away and gives up the chance to trade osi/kiwi. morgan is like having another justin tuck.

and maybe we can get a late first for osi but at worst it will be second round pick.. same for kiwi

    • Simon Garron-CaineSimonGC says:

Gman24– I was with you the whole way, except for the Morgan will be a starter right away.

Even if they traded Osi, he’s not starting over a healthy Tuck or Kiwanuka. I’m getting really tired of this Kiwanuka bashing. The guy is unspectacular, but he always plays with a high motor, he’s a great teammate and a great guy, and at the end of the day he made more plays in the backfield than anyone last year…or shall I say, he was the ONLY ONE making plays in the backfield last year.

  10. jfunk says:

If we DO wind up drafting a DE #1, I really think we should try to move Osi immediately and get another pick NOW for him.

I definitely think Osi can bounce back and will not be at all upset if we wind up with no DE’s (or only a depth guy), but if we spend a #1 on a guy, I think we should get something for Osi now while we can instead of getting one more year out of him and then possibly having to let him go for nothing.

In this draft, another high draft pick is worth a lot.

    • gman24 says:

i agree 100% but thier will be no trading untill the day of the draft thats for sure. if we can get a second and a late round pick that would be awsome..

call spags up he would loe to have osi

      • jfunk says:

Absolutely. I’m not suggesting we trade Osi now because we THINK we’ll draft a DE. I’m just saying if this kid Morgan is sitting there at 15 and Reese decides that’s the pick to make, I think after sending it in he should be immediately on the phone trying to move Osi.

If anybody offered a top 40 pick at that point I’d take it. Below that would at least have to come with some kind of package.
