As you all have seen, Giants 101 is going through some of its biggest changes in the history of the site. After years of hard work and tremendous support from loyal readers (thank you), we are now embarking on our newest rendition of G101, which will boast many new facets and features, while retaining the ones that made us what we are today.
To that effect, Giants 101 is kicking off our first “Writers Round Table” segment in our new digs and we’re counting on all of you to make it the best one yet. But before I delve into the details, please remember to read Benton’s most recent post about needing to register to comment on G101. “Writers Round Table” is entirely dependent on the degree of participation from the readers and without registering, it just won’t work…so please click the link above and follow the directions to register.
With your new account ready to roll, let’s get rolling on the New and Improved Giants 101 Writers Round Table segment!!
To participate (in case you have not yet done so), simply think of any question you have on your mind about the New York Giants and post it in the comments section below this post. You can post as many as you want and we will do our best to answer as many as we can, as best we can.
Questions about the Giants draft prospects? Curious about potential Free Agency additions that may be on the horizon? Wondering who we think will be the biggest difference-maker in 2010? Interested in hearing about how the Giants will fare in their new stadium? Pondering what Eli Manning’s Tuesday night routine is like? ASK (ok, maybe not the last one…we’d have to make that up)!
Please have all questions submitted by no later than Saturday night, March 20. We will then divvy them up, meticulously craft our most educated responses, and then post them next week for you all to read. There may even be a reward in store for someone who has the best question!
In the words of Dark Helmet…”do your worst.”
Thank you all for your continued readership and we look forward to hearing your questions.

First, Space Balls is one of my favorite movie all-time.
Second, I can’t go to sleep.
Third, a question; With all of the talk thats already been had over possible 1RD selections at #15 who are some prospects we should keep an eye on for our 2RD selection?
Here are a few players I think could be steals in Round 2 –
1) Lamarr Houston – DT, Texas. Stock is improving after a nice combine, productive college player, perfect for the scheme.
2) Chris Cook – CB, Virginia. Big, physical corner (6’2 215lbs) whith good speed, although corner is not a huge need.
3) Rodger Saffold – OT, Indiana. Massive offensive tackle (6’4 320lbs) with great feet. Could be an awesome tackle down the road, but will likely be gone by the Giants pick.
Would love Houston. Dude is a beast!
Another one; I love Nicks, Manningham and Smith but if a huge talent in Dez Bryant fell all the way to #15 would/could/should the Giants consider selecting him? He would certainly fit Reese’s BPA philosophy at that point.
Reese’s philosophy is NOT BPA. When we needed a corner he picked Aaron Ross, we needed a Safety and he picked Kenny Phillips, we needed a WR and he picked Hakeem Nicks. He picks BPA in a position of NEED.
I doubt the Giants would take Dez Bryant. I think he will be off of the board by #15 anyway, but if he is there I think the Giants pass. The Giants have a lot of needs and so many talented young wideouts.
Smith, Nicks, Manningham, Barden, Hixon.
Although the Bryant has a higher ceiling than anyone the Giants have, they are in pretty good shape and have other needs.
I think Reese would pass.
Yeah I feel the same but just wanted to throw it out there. Dez is a supreme talent.
Hanshi I watch too I know. But he’s also picked from what…25 and under I think? We’ve never been in a position where an elite guy like Bryant could fall to us. With both Ross and Philips we were praying they’d fall to us. I doubt we’d take Bryant and thats why I wrote the question the way I did but I still wanted to throw it out there.
and add Bryant to Barden, Beckham, Moss and Hixon who wont play??? doesnt make sense to me
Except for Bryant is WAY better than any of the. Barden is unproven and a project. Love the pick but he is what he is. Beckham is a TE. Moss wont be around and sux. Hixon is a joke of a WR and should stick to returning. Those guys dont matter. SS, Nicks and Manningham do however. Just wanted to through it out there.
That was my point, we have SS Nicks, and Manningham, then add Bryant to a list of 4 other guys who dont see the field. I think we have much bigger needs.
I would be furious if we took a WR… That was a list of the guys on our team that can catch the ball… i dont see how we have room for another, unless that man is coming out the back field.
LT56Fan…is your icon photo from the book LT: Living on the Edge by Lawrence Taylor and David Falkner? I’m 99% sure it is but would like to know. Great book if it is!
No actually its a Sports Illustrated cover.
OH OK well you should check out that book if you haven’t already. It was written in 1987 I believe.
Now with the addition of Rolle and a new DC what direction do you feel that we are going to make? I mean I love the 4-3 and I think we have great ingredients there for that scheme but the a cover 2 has been thrown around and a 3-4 has also been thrown around. I wouldn’t object to some sort of hybrid between the 3-4 and 4-3 depending on blitz packages but what direction do you feel as we are going? we haven’t made too many moves in any specific direction to give a straight answer….
Under Fewell the defense will stay in the base 4-3. The Giants do not have the personnel to run the 3-4.
Tuck and Canty could hold up as 3-4 ends and Sintim as a roush linebacker, but that is about it.
The Giants do not have one proven middle linebacker, much less two.
*Sintim as a rush linebacker
My question is this:
Considering the what I posted above: (Reese’s philosophy is NOT BPA. When we needed a corner he picked Aaron Ross, we needed a Safety and he picked Kenny Phillips, we needed a WR and he picked Hakeem Nicks. He picks BPA in a position of NEED.) Do you believe JR drafts BPA or for NEED? So many here have said In Reese We Trust and a lot of the same people have said that the Giants ALWAYS go BPA.
I think we might get lucky, and the BPA at #15 is going to be more than one guy that would fill a major need for us as well (LB, DT, RB?) But good point about JR that your not supposed to bring your depth chart to the draft, but reese continues to find those guys in position of need for us.
Hanshi –
I totally agree with you on this. Reese definitely drafts BPA @ a position of need. You have to do this as a GM. Why draft a great player if he is going to push another great player out of the lineup? Then you have the same problem that you started with.
That is why McClain falling to #15 is clearly the best scenario for the Giants. If he is there, he is the BPA in the position of most need.
If he is gone, I am not sure what the heck Reese does at this point. The BPA will likely be a DE or OT if he is gone.
I think they might be better off trading Osi, drafting a Derrick Morgan who can start off as a third end and taking it from there.
With the addition of Karlos Dansby, the possible addition of Joey Porter, a healthy Haynesworth, 2nd year Orakpo, ageless Fletcher and Rocky M. Do you believe the Giants O-line will struggle with the Redskins this upcoming season?
Do you think our starting linebackers will be Sintim, Goff and Boley going into the regular season?
Going into the regular season do you think our starting receivers are Nicks and Smith with Manningham being the number 3?
Lastly, Why don’t they just let Moss go??????
That is all…….
But Dansby didn’t go to the Redskins
Read that and got confused! Actually scared the shitz out of meez! meez!
haha, LUCKILY the Skins didn’t get Dansby.
The Haynesworth signing looks so bad for the Skins right now. He is not going to play the nose, but 3-4 end.
Maake Keomeatu will be the nose.
They are going to end up cutting Haynesworth with minimal production after this season for a huge financial hit.
I believe I read on rotoworld that haynesworth is due a huge roster bonus of 21 mill.
With all the talking coming from the defensive side of the ball, I would like to hear something about our RB situation. There was talk back a few months about a concern with Jacobs slowing down. I don’t believe it, but if true, do you think the likes of Ware, Johnson, and Brown…if healthy could make up the difference? Or do you think the GMen will target a RB in the middle rounds of the draft? The name Spiller keeps coming up but I don’t think he will be there in rounds 2 and 3.
Sad that I forgot Bradshaw in this question! Sorry guys! Should say Bradshaw, Ware, Johnson, and Brown! I hate myself right now!
I think our biggest issue with RB last season was an unhealthy Seubert, Hedgecock, Mkenzie, and co… then on top of that BJ and AB were banged up.
We will be fine, IMO. Our offense will be record breaking this season!
I think the running game bounces back in 2010 with the players the Giants curently have.
Jacobs and Bradshaw were both banged up all season, a promising rookie Andre Brown was out for the season. We’ll see how he does, since a torn achillies is tough to come back from and has ended carreers before.
Ware is a good player and was hurt too.
I would not be surprised to see the Giants draft a running back in the 6th or 7th round who will be brought into camp and given a chance to make the team, but I would not expect a CJ Spiller, Ryan Matthews or Javid Best.
First, I just wanted to recommend that you perhaps put a link to Dan’s registration post on the top right side bar, right above the Login and Register links so new visitors (or those that haven’t been here a while) see it without having to scroll through the article list.
Now my question. With this draft being as deep as is it and the general consensus being that the Giants need to look at upgrading several starting positions such as linebacker, OL, and DL, which of our long time depth players may be in trouble this year? I’m thinking players like Chase Blackburn, Zak DeOssie, Guy Whimper, Kevin Boothe, etc. Do you see these players being bumped from the roster for young draft picks, or do you see the Giants keeping them for their value as low cost depth and instead possibly cutting players higher on the depth chart but with higher costs like Rich Seubert and Gerris Wilkinson who may compete to start on another team? This of course assumes those players would be moved down the depth chart already by incoming draft picks.
There are always teams making moves in the draft. Whether its moving up or down or getting an extra pick…Do you see the Gmen staying put at 15? If not, what do you see them doing?
If McClain is off of the board at #15, I definitely see the Giants looking to trade down in round one.
When you look at the players who could be on the board at #15, the BPA (if McClain is off the board) will likely be:
1) an OT: Bulaga, Williams, Davis
2) a DE: JPP, Griffen, Morgan
The Giants could select one of these players, but they might be better off trading the pick and moving down.
This is a 2′fer…
There’s been a lot of talk on how many different need/quality depth positions the giants have (OL, LB, S). Is 2010 going to be a rebuilding year? I see it as a year we can contend, but we’re gonna need to address those needs. And unless this draft class turns out like the fabled one of 2007 we’re going to need to be more active in free agency.
For our LB situation… Kirk Morrison was only extended an original pick tender which is a 3rd round. He’s been a tackling machine for the raiders (90+ in 5 seasons). Do you think we should grab him now to play the mike and draft his replacement this year (aka McClain)? Do you think JR will take McClain given his Crohn’s disease?
I would like to say that I am not as big of a Morrison fan as a lot of the people on this board seem to be.
I think his tackling numbers are inflated. The Raiders are terrible and are down a lot late in games. Teams run the ball up the middle on them early and often, but especially late in games.
Morrison is a decent run defender. When teams are running dives all day and you are the middle linebacker, you are going to find youself in some piles and in on some tackles.
I do not think he is worth the Giants third round pick. I really am having trouble believing the front office is even interested. I think the a lot of it is the media seeing an RFA with an affordable tender and a need for the Giants.
I saw a prety cool community mock draft on bigblue view.com; thought it might go down well here and, stir up some heated discussions. So my question what,do you think?
