Giants, Jets Tussle Over Opening Day

By Simon Garron-Caine

The Giants and Jets are locked in a battle of…something…for the chance to play the first regular season game in the new Giants Stadium (yeah, that’s right, GIANTS Stadium).

According to the Jets’ website, a coin toss will determine who gets to play a week 1 game in East Rutherford. The league has contradicted the report, but the Jets’ website stands by it (according to the NY Daily News), even intimating that fans and media attendance may make the coin flip a public(ity) spectacle.

The Giants have been professional and refused to comment on the issue or the Jets’ website’s statements. The Daily News reports indicate that the Giants were quietly promised opening day 2010 when it became clear that the Jets would play the last game in the old stadium.

At the end of the day, not really a football story, but interesting nonetheless. The contrast between the way the two organizations are handling the problem (silence from Blue; kicking and screaming from Green) pretty much tells the tale: privately, both teams know the Giants have the upper hand. Will the Jets’ public last minute desperation attempts shame the league into going the coin flip route? We’ll see…

Wow What are the Browns thinking? They trade a player they used a first pick on for a FB a 6th round and a conditional pick in 2012. They also traded Kameron Wimbley to Oakland for a conditional pick. They are trying to outdue the Raiders to become the most inept franchise in the league.

Either that or Holmgren realized that his team is filled with junk players and half-way-decent ones who are valuable to other teams. While I agree that trading Quinn for anything less than a 3rd or a 4th is strange–the guy looked good towards the end of the ’08 season before he was injured. Then Mangina did the whole musical-quarterbacks thing in ’09 which clearly didn’t let Quinn get much going as a quarterback. Besides, who is on that team for him to do anything WITH in the first place?

Anyway, sometimes you gotta burn the whole thing down and rebuild completely.

Jets are a no class org. They haven’t won a championship since the 60′s. Giants deserve to open the new stadium without a doubt. What a crime it was that the Jets closed out Giants stadium.

I commented on this a couple days ago. At the time I said that the opening will be the Week 1 Sunday Night prime time game, so NBC will get a say as well. Jets are the more attractive team from a TV standpoint after last season, especially if the opponent is the Colts or Pats. But if the Giants opponent is the Boys in a rematch of stadium openers, that coppuld be equally attractive.

Since I won’t be going to that game, my only real interest in this debate is the ratings and business standpoint, because the powers that be (NFL/NBC) will schedule based on ratings and that’s it.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Tomlinson and the Jets reached an agreement today on a two-year contract.

Well, I guess that clinches it then.

No way can the first game in the new stadium be played by a team that just signed that fake-**** wannabe who goes around calling himself “LT.” Not when you have the opportunity to have the game played by the team who used to have the genuine article, the one and only LT, on their side.

It shouldn’t be any other way.

The NFL will give It to the jets playoff team last year so they think it will have a higher rating

how bout this.. the better franchise opens up week 1 at the new GIANTS stadium… argument over.. Stupid jets i hate them more and more each day

This is complete crap. This should be a non issue. The Jets got to play the final game at the old Giants stadium. Case Closed.

  7. TroyThorneTroyThorne says:

Yeah, the Browns are obviously just clearing house and starting from scratch. Honestly, that’s probably the best idea. It’s not worth wasting a couple of years trying to salvage a bunch of trash.

The Jets are jealous… always have been… always will be. If the Giants played in a bigger stadium back in the 60′s there wouldn’t be any Jet fans.

Most Giants fans don’t hate the Jets… in fact I kind of wish them well… NY and all that. But all Jet fans hate the Giants and hope we fail.

  9. krow101krow101 says:

Jet fans are a lot like Eagle fans… they don’t really care if they win themselves as long as other teams don’t.

  10. Therealdeal says:

Reading the comments on the bottom of the nfl.com website page from jet fans about who deserves to play in the new stadium is pretty amusing.. and also infuriating
