Rolle Fills One Need; More Remain

In an offseason where the Giants appeared to be facing a recently unprecedented number of roster holes, Jerry Reese did what he had to do by making sure he locked up Antrel Rolle. Much has been said about Rolle’s huge contract and lack of top flight ability, but nevertheless, that’s one hole filled.

We talk all the time about resisting temptation to draft players who repair roster deficiencies in order to draft the “Best Player Available.” But free agency basically works in an opposite manner: you target positions and fill needs; try to find players whose skill set and contract demands fit any of the holes on your team.

Sure, Karlos Dansby plays a need position, but Jon Goff is a better worst case scenario starter than CC Brown, and Dansby’s price would have skyrocketed had we been forced to outbid Miami. Julius Peppers? Didn’t fit at all. Would Maake Kemoeatu make the same impact on the line that Rolle will in the backfield? Didn’t think so.

Jerry Reese had too many needs on his plate to leave all for draft day. Given that Rolle was clearly the biggest impact player at the biggest need position that the market presented, Reese would have been stupid not to.

Now that he’s crossed one huge item off the top of the organization’s shopping list, the team can narrow it’s focus on draft day. In yesterday’s post, Kyle from G101 basically summed up the most pressing needs that remain when he highlighted MLB Rolando McClain, DT Brian Price and OL Mike Iupati.

There are other openings that need to be filled though. The Giants only have four legit corners on the roster (and one of them is Bruce Johnson). The Giants also have 3 of their 5 running backs coming off serious injuries, and could probably use a body there. Whatever Travis Beckum may become, he’s not the kind of depth that Giants need behind Kevin Boss.

So Jerry Reese still has a bunch of needs on draft day, but he used free agency well to fill the one glaring need that would threaten to force him to reach in the draft.

  1. Sam- When you mentioned Matt Tennant the other day I was like right, solid idea. Then I realized where he was from and he is officially penciled in as my 3rd round pick right now

  2. For those who want Spiller, what happens to him in 2010 if we get him? 3rd downs? idk… You know Jacobs is starting in 2010 and neither Bradshaw nor Cilfford would get the starting job over him. I love the guys skills, its just tough to see where he fits in

Garrard has chrons if im not mistaken and hes been fine

  4. Spell the end or Ware and Gartrell… Who had about 6 carries between then

So your first round pick is gonna return kicks and get a dozon carries?

I know he CAN catch the ball out of the back field and he CAN do what Derrick ward did for The Giants, the question is how? When?

After you get through BJ and Bardshaw’s carries?

    • axr29axr29 says:

you cut down the number of carries for BJ and bradshaw who have gotten pretty beat up the past few years. So having a third back who could be a game changer and also help keep your other RBs healthy is a good thing. It doesnt matter if he gets 20 carries a game this year, you have to factor in that you dont know how much longer BJ is gonna be here. If Mclains not there I honestly take Spiller before i take price, you can find guys with Price’s ability anywhere, Spillers is rare.

  5. Don’t get me wrong I would love to have Spiller… If we cut Brandon Jacobs, which just isn’t going to happen

  6. SamardzijaSamardzija says:

Spiller is much, much more talented then either Bradshaw or BJ.. He would take carries from them. If you dont think the coaches would use him, well then I can say that right back regarding every pick the Giants could possibly make. They cant be stupid enough to not get CJ on the field a lot, they just cant. BJ and Bradshaw are nice backs, they arent in his ballpark..

  7. Sam- Fair enough. TC and Killdrive have never let us down in the past

    • ^^^^^^^ Sarcasm……

      • jfunk says:

So we should just avoid drafting talented young players all together because TC hasn’t used some of our picks quickly enough for your tastes in the past?

Why don’t we just not bother drafting anybody and forfeit all of our games until TC retires then?

Seriously, this is a strawman argument.

        • axr29axr29 says:

plus field position is an important game. Spiller wont get 20 carries a game, but it will help both sides of the ball that much more if the Giants are starting from the 30-40 everytime out

  8. The Original G ManThe Original G Man says:

In all likelihood, this Spiller buzz is posturing by the Giants to get somebody to jump up in front of them to take him …. allowing (insert defensive player here) to slide down to them.

  9. The Original G ManThe Original G Man says:

And also, for whatever it is worth, the Giants use a “Weighted BPA” approach to the draft. Every player is given a grade, but they then add a multiplier to it depending on whether he plays a position of need or not.

  10. Super56Super56 says:

Spiller in blue; TC can dust of the old play book and get out some of those plays designed for Tiki. I’m excited about what I expect from our WR play this coming season add CJ and Beckum to the mix of weapons and we’d have a FULL arsenal.
