Jim Sorgi Backs-Up a Manning…Again…Still…

By Sean Carroll

As their next step in the preparation for the 2010 NFL season, the New York Giants today signed QB Jim Sorgi, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts, according to ProFootballTalk.  Sorgi has been Peyton Manning’s back-up in Indy for six years.

Now Sorgi will vy for the right to back-up the other brother, Eli Manning.  Per Giants Pat Hanlon’s tweet:

“Manning to Manning…Peyton’s backup of 6 yrs, Jim Sorgi, now a Giant and will compete with Rhett Bomar for same role behind Eli.”

Now, following the departure of David Carr to the 49ers, the Giants sought-out Sorgi to compete with Rhett Bomar for the understudy role on the Big Blue offense.  According to reports, the Giants inked Sorgi to a one-year deal after sorting out some initial concerns about the health (read: shoulder) of the new back-up.   According to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger,

“The team doctor talked to (noted orthopedic surgeon) Dr. (James) Andrews. He has a history with Jim,” Sorgi’s agent, Matt Brei, said by phone. “It was a matter of everybody getting comfortable, so we got the doctors in contact and everything was cleared. That’s where a little bit of the holdup was.”

In other news, the Giants have now clinched the “Strangest Sounding Back-Up QB Names” title.

So, right now, Eli’s backup is either Jim Sorgi or Rhett Bomar…

Until someone officially wins the job, I shall call them:

    Jett Borgi

  2. BigBlue401 BigBlue401 says:

what about derek anderson any chance of him being our back up?

  3. Los Los says:

ehh, Derek Anderson was just released, as expected. I think I would of preferred him over Sorgi for many reasons. Anderson doesn’t have this shoulder issue, has starting experience, and actually had success in 2007. People might say “he sucks” but remember that he played for a bad Browns team. Imagine what he can do with actually weapons and a decent O-Line.

Oh well, in the end our back ups won’t see any starts since we have a very durable QB.

Better be knockin on wood over there, Los!! :)

    repost:

Bradford’s arm is way underrated. He can definitely make all the throws, he just doesn’t have a cannon like the Russells, Cutlers, and Favres have. Actually, I’d say that Bradford’s arm is pretty comparable to Eli’s.

Also, after seeing FF55 suggest Carr was worth a 2nd round pick and calling Jim Sorgi a “terrific player” I’m convinced backup QB is his favorite position in all of sports.

      Re: Bradford…

Anyone accusing him of being “injury prone” drastically over-dramatizes what has happened to this kid. He’s been the victim of two freakish accidents, consecutive injuries that are Job-like in nature.

  6. Samardzija Samardzija says:

Eli has a better arm then Bradford. Nobody ever questioned the arm. He just doesnt have a tight spiral, but he makes it work because of his strong arm. Bradford has a pretty spiral, but it dies and turns into a lollipop on deep throws..

  7. Samardzija Samardzija says:

I wouldnt say freakish.. Its just easy to re-injure when it hasnt healed properly.

  8. Samardzija Samardzija says:

This pre-season I want se Bhomar actually get some reps. Nobody cares what Sorgi can do. All he needs to do is have that clipboard secured, dont even worry about throwing the football

  9. shmitty013 shmitty013 says:

I was never comparing Eli and Bradford, but rather Bradford and Claussen and why I think Claussen is a better prospect than Bradford. IMO Claussen has a much better deep ball because Bradford doesn’t have the arm strength of Claussen. I’m not convinced he can make all the throws. He’s great underneath because he’s highly accurate, but throwing into the wind, not even a strong one, he’s going to have a hell of a difficult time on deep balls.

And Bradford was injury prone in college because of his size. He was barely over 210, built like a beanpole, but he’s since added about 25 pounds, so he’s probably not as injury prone as he once was. But I’m not going to pass judgement on what that added size will do, until I see him in a game with it. So for now, I’m just going on the smaller Bradford.

Has anybody seen what Sorgi’s contract is yet?

  12. Kevros Kevros says:

I want the Giants to trade back and draft Spikes and Best with their first two pick. Or best DT available and Best if they get Morrison from OAK. I really want Best the more I see and read about him. I have about 1% confidence that Jacobs can be effective for more than 4 games…

  13. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

Troy, okay, I’ll say it again.

Sorgi is a terrific backup and I think the perfect answer. You probably have him for the rest of Eli’s career; he knows all about Peyton and can teach Eli stuff his brother probably doesn’t offer unless Eli asks because he doesn’t want to show him up; and you can draft a young, promising player (like Bomar) every once in a while and try and develop him knowing you have a solid backup as insurance (and then wind up with either a tradable player you’ve developed or someone who can displace Sorgi and potentially succeed Eli).

And yeah, if the Giants could have signed him up to a longer contract I think he would have been worth a second pick to a team that needs a quarterback. In all likelihood no one would have offered it, but they would have been mistaken. I think he stands a great chance to displace Alex Smith and become the Niners’ starter, and that’s definitely worth a second pick, if not more. Another way of looking at it is this: if Carr was signed to a long contract by the Giants (I’m NOT saying this was possible…it was always a hypothetical) would you rather have him or Chad Henne (who I also like, and was a second round pick)? Some would say Henne, some would say Carr. This guy wasn’t the #1 pick in the draft for no reason. He has a lot of talent, and he’s no dummy. he got unlucky by getting drafted with a team that never got him blockers, and it ruined him. Two years of “quarterbacks anonymous” therapy in New York should have straightened him out to the point where he can produce. I guess we’ll see.

And yeah, I do love the backup quarterback spot. It was always my dream to be a backup quarterback. I also wanted to play right field and be the 12th man on the bench. Oh, and I wanted to be a right defensive middie in lacrosse (believe me, it’s not a great position) and a backup keeper in soccer. I was taught to dream big, but not too big.

  14. TroyThorne TroyThorne says:

FF55 – I don’t think anyone would take Carr in that hypothetical if only because of age. I do think Henne looked pretty good for a rook and has a bright future ahead of him. I can’t say the same about Carr. Also, there’s been plenty of guys drafted high that turned out not to have it. Mistakes happen. Anyway, Carr is off the team and thus I no longer care about him.

As for Sorgi, I think it’s a fine signing. I don’t think he’s going to provide nearly the amount of inside info you do but neither of us have any proof either way so it’d be a fruitless discussion. I was just kidding around because backup QBs usually don’t get any love unless the starter is performing poorly (at which point he becomes everyone’s favorite player) but you’ve given our past two high praise. It’s just not something you see everyday.

Troy, what browser are you using? Apparently a lot of guys cannot get through to this thread. I think it’s an Internet Explorer issue. Just checking.

I’ll be sure to address the writers so this doesn’t happen again in the future.

  20. kujonicus kujonicus says:

Isn’t it lovely to have the luxury of arguing who would be a better BACK UP quarterback? In a time when there are so many teams with uncertainty at the head of their team, it’s nice to have the ability to think ahead knowing that our quarterback is among the best in the league.

  21. truth truth says:

anyone else think we will pick spiller with out 1st pick?
he immediately becomes our kick returner and will slowly be worked into the offense as jacobs will go down with an injury at some point…

defense should be better with canty osi tuck kp and a ross all healthy

i think everyone is overrating the need for a 1st round defensive player, esp. a DT who has a big chance of being a bust (dewayne ferguson, w joseph, jonathan sullivan)

    • Dirt Dirt says:

I’d gladly donate a testicle for Spiller.

    • kujonicus kujonicus says:

Anyone, Spiller included, could be a bust.

You go with your needs. DT is above LB in terms of need. We can take that in the first, or pursue some of the 2nd level people (e.g.- Odrick, Alualu, Johnson) while looking to upgrade our offensive line.

A little undersized for a DT, and is more of a pass rusher on the inside, somewhat weak against the run. His numbers were down throughout the season, but he really impressed at the Senior Bowl when he constantly beat Iupati with his quickness. I’d say 4th round.

      • krow101 krow101 says:

I’d say 3… only because of the premium put on pass rushers… and his incredible sophomore campaign. Boom or bust pick… like Charlie Manson.

I should totally be happy with Sorgi because for a while I always pointed to him and wished he was here for us and now he is but I really wanted Jeff Garcia. He and Brunell must have looked bad today. Oh well, welcome aboard Sorgi!

truth – I think everyone is overrating the need for a 1st round offensive player, especially a RB who has a big chance of being a bust (Curtis Enis, Darren McFadden, Chris Perry).

    FactCheck,

Interesting theory there. Not sure how you could say that the Chargers didn’t want Eli considering they drafted him. If they didn’t want him, they’d have drafted Rivers instead. Where did you come up with these “facts?”
    ————–

There was this matter of him and Archie going on national TV and announcing that he wouldn’t play for the Chargers if they drafted him. You think the Chargers wanted a gamble like that coming off the Ryan Leaf fiasco (Eli was backed by IMG and could have very well sat out the entire season if he’d wanted to).

Then there’s A.J. Smith stating publicly that he tried to trade the pick to the Brown (#7) so that he could pick Rivers but couldn’t work out a deal.

And then there was the fact that the Chargers took Manning with the first overall pick without having spoken AT ALL with him prior to the draft (most teams like to at least let their guy know that they’re thinking of them).

Should I keep going or is that enough “facts” for you?

    • kujonicus kujonicus says:

They drafted him. If they didn’t want him, they wouldn’t have drafted him.

Talk around it all you want but those are the indisputable facts. Sure they COULD have realized that we wanted him and decided to see if they could get a deal from us by taking him first and leveraging him over us. Still, they had to have realized that that was a gamble that could possibly have backfired. Thus, by going through with drafting him, they were ready to accept him as their quarterback if their risk didn’t pay off.

They drafted him. If they didn’t want him, they wouldn’t have drafted him.
