Jim Sorgi Backs-Up a Manning…Again…Still…

As their next step in the preparation for the 2010 NFL season, the New York Giants today signed QB Jim Sorgi, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts, according to ProFootballTalk.  Sorgi has been Peyton Manning‘s back-up in Indy for six years.

Now Sorgi will vy for the right to back-up the other brother, Eli Manning.  Per Giants Pat Hanlon’s tweet:

“Manning to Manning…Peyton’s backup of 6 yrs, Jim Sorgi, now a Giant and will compete with Rhett Bomar for same role behind Eli.”

Now, following the departure of David Carr to the 49ers, the Giants sought-out Sorgi to compete with Rhett Bomar for the understudy role on the Big Blue offense.  According to reports, the Giants inked Sorgi to a one-year deal after sorting out some initial concerns about the health (read: shoulder) of the new back-up.   According to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger,

“The team doctor talked to (noted orthopedic surgeon) Dr. (James) Andrews. He has a history with Jim,” Sorgi’s agent, Matt Brei, said by phone. “It was a matter of everybody getting comfortable, so we got the doctors in contact and everything was cleared. That’s where a little bit of the holdup was.”

In other news, the Giants have now clinched the “Strangest Sounding Back-Up QB Names” title.

So, right now, Eli’s backup is either Jim Sorgi or Rhett Bomar…

Until someone officially wins the job, I shall call them:

    Jett Borgi

what about derek anderson any chance of him being our back up?

ehh, Derek Anderson was just released, as expected. I think I would of preferred him over Sorgi for many reasons. Anderson doesn’t have this shoulder issue, has starting experience, and actually had success in 2007. People might say “he sucks” but remember that he played for a bad Browns team. Imagine what he can do with actually weapons and a decent O-Line.

Oh well, in the end our back ups won’t see any starts since we have a very durable QB.

  4. Better be knockin on wood over there, Los!! :)

    repost:

Bradford’s arm is way underrated. He can definitely make all the throws, he just doesn’t have a cannon like the Russells, Cutlers, and Favres have. Actually, I’d say that Bradford’s arm is pretty comparable to Eli’s.

Also, after seeing FF55 suggest Carr was worth a 2nd round pick and calling Jim Sorgi a “terrific player” I’m convinced backup QB is his favorite position in all of sports.

      Re: Bradford…

Anyone accusing him of being “injury prone” drastically over-dramatizes what has happened to this kid. He’s been the victim of two freakish accidents, consecutive injuries that are Job-like in nature.

Eli has a better arm then Bradford. Nobody ever questioned the arm. He just doesnt have a tight spiral, but he makes it work because of his strong arm. Bradford has a pretty spiral, but it dies and turns into a lollipop on deep throws..

  7. SamardzijaSamardzija says:

I wouldnt say freakish.. Its just easy to re-injure when it hasnt healed properly.

This pre-season I want se Bhomar actually get some reps. Nobody cares what Sorgi can do. All he needs to do is have that clipboard secured, dont even worry about throwing the football

I was never comparing Eli and Bradford, but rather Bradford and Claussen and why I think Claussen is a better prospect than Bradford. IMO Claussen has a much better deep ball because Bradford doesn’t have the arm strength of Claussen. I’m not convinced he can make all the throws. He’s great underneath because he’s highly accurate, but throwing into the wind, not even a strong one, he’s going to have a hell of a difficult time on deep balls.

And Bradford was injury prone in college because of his size. He was barely over 210, built like a beanpole, but he’s since added about 25 pounds, so he’s probably not as injury prone as he once was. But I’m not going to pass judgement on what that added size will do, until I see him in a game with it. So for now, I’m just going on the smaller Bradford.

And with that, since my school is 5 minutes from the Lond Island Sound, I’m going to take a quick drive down to the beach because this weather is awesome!
