Antrel Rolle Comments on Becoming a Giant; Jeff Garcia on the Radar

Over the last 24-48 hours, everything regarding Antrel Rolle has been discussed at great length. Is he poor in coverage? Did he just play well in his contract year? And will his lack of leadership be relevant when he takes the field?

Some of the questions were both easy to answer and ignore. However, the one I was really interested in was the latter. What kind of leader, if any, is Rolle?

Well, after his first conference call with the media, many Giants beat writers came away highly impressed with Rolle.

“Very impressed with Rolle. Reminds me a lot of [Antonio Pierce] and has that swagger that was missing from the defense last year,” Pat Traina of Inside Football wrote.

From the sounds of it, thoughts of Rolle’s inability to lead were greatly exaggerated. And his confidence and determination seem to back that up.

“[Kenny Phillips and I will be] the best in the league,” Rolle said. “Hands down”

Rolle also talked about his big hit on Kevin Boss from this past season.

“Not going to be strange at all. We’re all men. Wasn’t intentional; was coming to make a statement,” he added. “When I’m on the field I show no pity for the next man. I’m definitely a head hunter. I want to make sure my presence is felt.”

Rolle also said he plans to travel to Miami to help Phillips rehabs. Claims he “won’t leave his side.”

Finally, the Giants’ newest safety said Arizona was willing to match any offer New York made, but that Big Blue “felt like home”…similar to the way he felt about Miami in college.

Quotes:

Kevin Boss on Antrel Rolle:

Very excited to hear about the signing of A. Rolle…glad he is on my team now!”

Tom Coughlin:

“The idea that this is associated with the Kenny Phillips situation is incorrect.”

Other Notes:

- The Giants have waived defensive backs Aaron Rouse and Londen Fryar.

- Should David Carr eventually sign with the San Francisco 49ers, Jeff Garcia could be a likely candidate to replace him. WFAN is reporting that the former Eagle is on a very short list of backup quarterbacks the Giants are considering taking a look into.

eBay Bidding:

- If you’re a collector of Giants memorabilia, then you should check out this eBay auction. A percentage of the winning bid will be donated to Giants 101. I’ve seen this flag in person and can verify that the seller is legit. It was owned by a long-time Giants fan who traveled to camp over the last (nearly) 20 years and collected signatures.

Got to admit that I love Jeff Garcia and that he’s a pure winner and I’d be thrilled to have him become a Giant. I’d honestly look at him as an upgrade to Carr. And Jeff’s wife is really hot!

Totally disappointed to hear Aaron Rouse was cut. Sounds to me like CC Brown will make the roster now unless we still draft a safety. The way I see it, MJ backs up Rolle and CCB backs up KP because he’s more of an in the box safety. I hope things change but its almost like Reese wants to give CCB a chance to prove the signing wasn’t a bad one last season, especially when Sean Jones was still available at that time.

Anyone care to venture a guess as to how this player might get along with Mr. Tom Coughlin?

    OLB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri
For as well as Weatherspoon worked out on the field and for as much as his “character” is praised within the Missouri program, he has turned off a number of decision makers just as much with his outlandish, look-at-me, loudmouth personality and has been criticized for worrying too much about his image and post-football career aspirations before he has accomplished anything in the National Football League.”He never shuts up,” one top executive said. “He was the loudest guy in the room for the bench press. He gives me a headache. I think he is full of (it). It’s all about himself. I don’t want him in my locker room.”

      hahahahahah not well

If that description is anywhere near accurate, you can pretty much take out a big ol’ magic marker and cross Weatherpoon’s name off the list of possibilities at 15.

Potential stud LB or not, I doubt Reese rolls the dice on a guy that sounds like he’d be an absolutely disastrous fit with the martinet who currently serves as the Giants head coach.

‘Tis a pity; I was starting to warm up to the idea of ‘Spoon.

Who cares what Coughlin thinks? He’s here for another two years max.

BTW have we discussed how ridiculous Julius Peppers contract is? 42 million GUARANTEED? A possibility of 91.5 mil if he hits incentives? Suddenly the Rolle contract doesn’t look as bad. Especially not when you see how much a below average CB in Dunta Robinson got.

  6. normnorm says:

    Troy,

Given that all I’ve been reading around here for the past few weeks is that the Giants are in “Win Now” mode, I’d think it makes a great deal of difference as to what Coughlin thinks – being that he’s still the head coach.

I could easily see him trying to “break” Weatherspoon as if he were some headstrong young colt so it’s possible he sees even less playing time than another rookie might get. More to the point, though, he’s likely going to have a big say in the Giants war room and if that above description is accurate (and I have no idea if it is) I can see him lobbying heavily against selecting the kid.

I was only half-serious with the who cares comment. But I do think that you’re looking too much into things. First of all, these pre-draft rumors carry as much validity as high school gossip. You can only take them as what they are, baseless, unsubstantiated rumors.

Also, our team isn’t full of former military personnel. Brandon Jacobs is a loudmouth guy who gets into his fair share of shoving matches and we’ve seen no ill repercussions from it. We brought in Michael Boley when he had domestic abuse charges hanging over his head. We brought in Bradshaw and gave him a good amount of carries when he had his own legal troubles. Let’s not forget the dearly departed Antonio Pierce who had the biggest mouth of them all. And what did Coughlin do? Not only was he a starter for long than he should have been but he was the captain of the defense! Speaking of big mouth divas, there’s one sitting in the clank right now who caused quite a bit of drama. Missed practices, missed meetings, no phonecalls, yelling at Coughlin at the sidelines, etc. Sure he missed a game and a couple of quarters but he was out there a vast majority of the time and a lot of his “diva-ness” was hidden from the public for quite some time.

So, I do think you’re reading too much into it. If the Giants think Spoon can play, I doubt they’ll care about one “top executive’s” opinion on him being too loud.

    • normnorm says:

      True enough; good point.

    • normnorm says:

That being said, though, I’m also fairly certain that “character” is given some weight (who knows how much) in the decision whether to draft this player or that player.

Of course, we as fans have little or no insights into these “character” issues beyond what we see on TV or read in the papers. But I do know that teams do run prospective high picks through a battery of psychological exams to try and get a better read on what type of person they might be drafting. And since fans have no idea how different players rate on those tests, it sometimes leads to decisions being made that may be at odds with how we rate players based on their on-field prodcution and measurables.

So, you’re right, that the Giants are certainly not going to care one one unnamed “top executive” thinks about Spoon or any other player. However, I would venture to bet that if the results of their own psych tests are not too far off the mark from “Mr. Top Executive,” that it would downgrade Sppon on their board.

  8. arigsbeearigsbee says:

Ehh…I’d rather have Storgi than Garcia. Just me though. And apparently, if the 49ers don’t lock Carr down, the Browns are interested.

    Inside_Football

RT @MaryKayCabot: Browns interested in free agent QB David Carr if he doesn’t sign with 49ers today. #nyg

  9. TurkishTurkish says:

Both Rolle and Phillips numbers chosen as tribute to Sean Taylor. 21 in Washington & 26 on Miami.

  10. TroyThorneTroyThorne says:

norm – Oh yeah, I agree 100% with the psych test evaluations playing a big part in where a player falls on a team’s board. It’s just this one “report” is the only time I’ve heard anyone question Spoon’s character.
