Over the last 24-48 hours, everything regarding Antrel Rolle has been discussed at great length. Is he poor in coverage? Did he just play well in his contract year? And will his lack of leadership be relevant when he takes the field?
Some of the questions were both easy to answer and ignore. However, the one I was really interested in was the latter. What kind of leader, if any, is Rolle?
Well, after his first conference call with the media, many Giants beat writers came away highly impressed with Rolle.
“Very impressed with Rolle. Reminds me a lot of [Antonio Pierce] and has that swagger that was missing from the defense last year,” Pat Traina of Inside Football wrote.
From the sounds of it, thoughts of Rolle’s inability to lead were greatly exaggerated. And his confidence and determination seem to back that up.
“[Kenny Phillips and I will be] the best in the league,” Rolle said. “Hands down”
Rolle also talked about his big hit on Kevin Boss from this past season.
“Not going to be strange at all. We’re all men. Wasn’t intentional; was coming to make a statement,” he added. “When I’m on the field I show no pity for the next man. I’m definitely a head hunter. I want to make sure my presence is felt.”
Rolle also said he plans to travel to Miami to help Phillips rehabs. Claims he “won’t leave his side.”
Finally, the Giants’ newest safety said Arizona was willing to match any offer New York made, but that Big Blue “felt like home”…similar to the way he felt about Miami in college.
Quotes:
Kevin Boss on Antrel Rolle:
“Very excited to hear about the signing of A. Rolle…glad he is on my team now!”
Tom Coughlin:
“The idea that this is associated with the Kenny Phillips situation is incorrect.”
Other Notes:
- The Giants have waived defensive backs Aaron Rouse and Londen Fryar.
- Should David Carr eventually sign with the San Francisco 49ers, Jeff Garcia could be a likely candidate to replace him. WFAN is reporting that the former Eagle is on a very short list of backup quarterbacks the Giants are considering taking a look into.
eBay Bidding:
- If you’re a collector of Giants memorabilia, then you should check out this eBay auction. A percentage of the winning bid will be donated to Giants 101. I’ve seen this flag in person and can verify that the seller is legit. It was owned by a long-time Giants fan who traveled to camp over the last (nearly) 20 years and collected signatures.

I love what im hearing so far from rolle.. i cant wait to see him in playing in blue.. and i wouldnt mind jeff garcia as the back up to eli.. anyone who can step in and play god forbid anything were to happen is fine wit me
I love to see us sign Jeff Garcia’s hot wife… I mean Jeff Garcia.
haha she is extremely hot thats just an added bonus to see her at the game
What does Coughlin mean about Kenny Phillips?
Tom Coughlin on the Rolle signing: “The idea that this is associated with the Kenny Phillips situation is incorrect.”
the signing of rolle has nothing to do with phillips injury (hes not a replacement)
He’s just easing the minds of people who are thinking “Wow, we spent all that money on a safety. Kenny Phillips must be really hurt!”
I won’t be around to defend or discuss what I am about to say, bit I want to share it anyway.
If I weer in charge, this is what I’d do/have done:
- Cut CC Brown instead of Rouse.
- Sign Morrison and give up the third if that’s all it took.
- Sign a backup QB like Garcia or Sorgi after Carr goes to SF.
- Move Diehl back to the inside, Richy to the bench and give Beatty a starting job.
- Sign David Tyree and Rock Cartwright (Giants are looking for a RB anyway) to help significantly on ST.
- Release Sinorice Moss or Derek Hagan to make room for Tyree.
- Find a legitimate blocking TE.
In the draft, I’d probably still look for another S, a DT and even another LB or two.
Either via FA or the Draft, I’d also look for a CB to replace Dockery.
ok good thank you
What I don’t get about Carr… is why go somewhere else to be a backup?
http://forums.eog.com/online-sportsbooks-and-gambling-discussion/carmella-jeff-garcias-wife-sports-related-108633.html
here ya go boys
damn.. lets bring in garcia
Krow – Because he’s not that good and probably thinks he has a better shot of starting a few games in SF than NY.
Dan – Disagree with you on a few things. I think Hagan is a very good special teams player. I wouldn’t release him for Tyree or Cartwright, especially not if it means keeping Senorita on the roster. I don’t think Morrison is worth the 3rd rounder and would rather draft a MLB of the future. I’m also thinking they like Bear Pascoe as the blocking TE. Plus if we kick Seubert to the bench like you want, he can be our situational blocking TE.
I left Moss/Hagan interchangeable there.
As far as Morrison, I’d prefer him over a rookie because the Giants are sort of built to win now. What we thought was a dynasty a few years ago is already reaching the point where it’d be passing.
The OL is getting kind of old and beat up, the DT position is falling apart, there is a lot of question marks at LBer…
I think a veteran LB would be the smart decision if the team wants to continue with the “win now” mantra. Cause lets face it, one the OL does get too old, Coughlin goes, etc…we’ll be in rebuilding mode.
LOL
Dan adds in moderations for bad words to try and make G101 more politically correct and csherm goes and posts softcore pics of Garcia’s wife.
Seriously. But she’s such a fine piece of art I can’t even delete it.
Lol this is true
Dan – “Find a legitimate blocking TE.”
Agree 100%.
Look for Nate Byham in the draft from Pitt.
This guy is one of the best, if not the best blocking TE in the draft.
He could be had in the late rounds, 5-7.
Does anybody know if the Rolle conference call is available online?
Troy – Agreed.
Don’t like Morrison too much and this is a pretty deep draft. I’d rather draft a MLB, i.e. McClain or Spikes. Like those two players better.
The Giants did pick up Bear Pascoe to be their blocking TE. But if their not impressed, they could draft Nate Byham late round.
Dan – It’s not so much me being opposed to bringing in a veteran LB but more of me questioning whether or not Morrison fits. It’d be nice to know for sure if we’re implementing a Cover 2 or just adding more Cover 2 elements or what. If we’re going to be leaning more towards the Cover 2, the MLB drops into deep zones quite a bit, and Morrison is weak in coverage. That’s my only real problem.
That and I’m a huge draft nerd and don’t like parting with picks.
And yeah, Garcia’s wife is hot as hell. Hottest beard ever IMO.
Rolle has taken #26. And with that, I am outta here. Have a good one, boys.
giantspathanlon Rolle moves to No 26 for NYG chapter of his career. #nyg
Look who was right me!!! lol
me too! but yeah, you def called it.
and several others…lol There are only so many numbers that could have been used.
Also, can we consider switching Ross from corner to safety?
Ross, like Rolle, is a failed corner. Plain and simple. Didn’t like his college game and his game in the pros have failed to matriculate.
His last season when he was fully healthy (2008):
Ross: 81 attempts, 9.11 YPA, 19.75 Forced INC%, 4 TDs, 3 INTs
Those numbers are atrocious.
9.11 YPA is basically a first down.
19.75 Forced INC% – So QB’s completed more than 80% of their throws. A decent cornerback will force incompletions about 30% and elite corners, which Webster was back in 2008, will force incompletions about 65% of the time.
The TD’s and interceptions. Back when people were talking about Ross, I said that he’d have his fair share of interceptions, but he’ll also give up his fair share of TD’s.
Ross didn’t do so bad at safety. And Phillips, even though he’s 100% healthy, won’t be able to play the number of snaps as he normally would. It’s not feasible and it’s not smart to rush a key player like that. Arthritic knees never get better, they only get worse.
So in the snaps that Phillips will have to sit due to inevitable swelling or whatever the case may be, I’d rather see Ross, than Johnson or Brown.
Willie Parker-RB- Steelers Mar. 6 – 1:02 pm et
Free agent Willie Parker is scheduled to visit the Redskins on Monday.
Parker is beyond the point where he’ll be considered for starting jobs, but the Redskins don’t have another back on the roster other than Clinton Portis. Parker could play a complementary role and add depth behind Portis.

Ross was awful at safety last season. Not to mention, it’s not as simple as “go play safety now.” It’s an entirely different position with entirely different responsibilities with an entirely different view of the field which requires entirely different instincts. Plus safety is a more physical position and Aaron Ross is fragile at best. He’ll also be our nickelback now with the emergence of Terrell Thomas which means the level of talent he’ll be lining up against will drop.
I agree that Ross should stay at corner. I’m OK with Johnson as our 3rd safety and I still think we should draft another to be our 4 and replace CC. Hopefully the draft pick will eventually make Johnson expendable or move up the depth chart if Kenny’s health remains a problem or Rolle is a disappointment or becomes too expensive at $7+/yr with a young player waiting behind him.
cut rouse?….idk why the heck it wasnt brown!
garcias wife..mmm mmm lol.
idk bout morrison guys….i want Mclain/Spoon! and then get a good DT in the 2nd
I like that plan tt. Let’s get our pat Willis
Got to admit that I love Jeff Garcia and that he’s a pure winner and I’d be thrilled to have him become a Giant. I’d honestly look at him as an upgrade to Carr. And Jeff’s wife is really hot!
Totally disappointed to hear Aaron Rouse was cut. Sounds to me like CC Brown will make the roster now unless we still draft a safety. The way I see it, MJ backs up Rolle and CCB backs up KP because he’s more of an in the box safety. I hope things change but its almost like Reese wants to give CCB a chance to prove the signing wasn’t a bad one last season, especially when Sean Jones was still available at that time.
Anyone care to venture a guess as to how this player might get along with Mr. Tom Coughlin?
OLB Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri
For as well as Weatherspoon worked out on the field and for as much as his “character” is praised within the Missouri program, he has turned off a number of decision makers just as much with his outlandish, look-at-me, loudmouth personality and has been criticized for worrying too much about his image and post-football career aspirations before he has accomplished anything in the National Football League.”He never shuts up,” one top executive said. “He was the loudest guy in the room for the bench press. He gives me a headache. I think he is full of (it). It’s all about himself. I don’t want him in my locker room.”
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=pfw-20100302_combine_winners_and_losers&prov=pfw&type=lgns
hahahahahah not well
If that description is anywhere near accurate, you can pretty much take out a big ol’ magic marker and cross Weatherpoon’s name off the list of possibilities at 15.
Potential stud LB or not, I doubt Reese rolls the dice on a guy that sounds like he’d be an absolutely disastrous fit with the martinet who currently serves as the Giants head coach.
‘Tis a pity; I was starting to warm up to the idea of ‘Spoon.
This doesn’t bother me at all. Mikes should be vocal.
Who cares what Coughlin thinks? He’s here for another two years max.
BTW have we discussed how ridiculous Julius Peppers contract is? 42 million GUARANTEED? A possibility of 91.5 mil if he hits incentives? Suddenly the Rolle contract doesn’t look as bad. Especially not when you see how much a below average CB in Dunta Robinson got.
Troy,
Given that all I’ve been reading around here for the past few weeks is that the Giants are in “Win Now” mode, I’d think it makes a great deal of difference as to what Coughlin thinks – being that he’s still the head coach.
I could easily see him trying to “break” Weatherspoon as if he were some headstrong young colt so it’s possible he sees even less playing time than another rookie might get. More to the point, though, he’s likely going to have a big say in the Giants war room and if that above description is accurate (and I have no idea if it is) I can see him lobbying heavily against selecting the kid.
I was only half-serious with the who cares comment. But I do think that you’re looking too much into things. First of all, these pre-draft rumors carry as much validity as high school gossip. You can only take them as what they are, baseless, unsubstantiated rumors.
Also, our team isn’t full of former military personnel. Brandon Jacobs is a loudmouth guy who gets into his fair share of shoving matches and we’ve seen no ill repercussions from it. We brought in Michael Boley when he had domestic abuse charges hanging over his head. We brought in Bradshaw and gave him a good amount of carries when he had his own legal troubles. Let’s not forget the dearly departed Antonio Pierce who had the biggest mouth of them all. And what did Coughlin do? Not only was he a starter for long than he should have been but he was the captain of the defense! Speaking of big mouth divas, there’s one sitting in the clank right now who caused quite a bit of drama. Missed practices, missed meetings, no phonecalls, yelling at Coughlin at the sidelines, etc. Sure he missed a game and a couple of quarters but he was out there a vast majority of the time and a lot of his “diva-ness” was hidden from the public for quite some time.
So, I do think you’re reading too much into it. If the Giants think Spoon can play, I doubt they’ll care about one “top executive’s” opinion on him being too loud.
True enough; good point.
That being said, though, I’m also fairly certain that “character” is given some weight (who knows how much) in the decision whether to draft this player or that player.
Of course, we as fans have little or no insights into these “character” issues beyond what we see on TV or read in the papers. But I do know that teams do run prospective high picks through a battery of psychological exams to try and get a better read on what type of person they might be drafting. And since fans have no idea how different players rate on those tests, it sometimes leads to decisions being made that may be at odds with how we rate players based on their on-field prodcution and measurables.
So, you’re right, that the Giants are certainly not going to care one one unnamed “top executive” thinks about Spoon or any other player. However, I would venture to bet that if the results of their own psych tests are not too far off the mark from “Mr. Top Executive,” that it would downgrade Sppon on their board.
Ehh…I’d rather have Storgi than Garcia. Just me though. And apparently, if the 49ers don’t lock Carr down, the Browns are interested.
Inside_Football
RT @MaryKayCabot: Browns interested in free agent QB David Carr if he doesn’t sign with 49ers today. #nyg
Both Rolle and Phillips numbers chosen as tribute to Sean Taylor. 21 in Washington & 26 on Miami.
norm – Oh yeah, I agree 100% with the psych test evaluations playing a big part in where a player falls on a team’s board. It’s just this one “report” is the only time I’ve heard anyone question Spoon’s character.
I am hearing Kenny Phillips might not be as far along as thought. The Giants may be looking to add another safety.
Lombardi is full of s%$t.
I can’t believe they released Rouse and not CC Brown. To me, this means they still want to come away from the draft with a safety. Maybe that third round pick…
So the Cards, 49ers and Browns want Carr….so when does Carmella Garcia, I mean, Jeff Garcia become a Giant?
For the record, I think drafting a safety on day two is our best route but what would you guys think about signing Gibril Wilson as a backup? He’s a guy we could start if KP isn’t healthy and coming off two bad back to back years in Oak and Miami a starting job probably isn’t an option for him unless he wants to be a Lion.
He may be able to be had for a 1 or 2 year deal.
By the way, I guess we all should have seen the Rouse release coming after news broke Rolle would wear #26. Still don’t want Cant Cover Brown on the squad again.
I wonder if the Giants really may be in love with either Vince Anderson or Shareff Rashad, and one of those guys will get a serious look for that 4th spot behind KP, AR, and MJ….
So what’s going on… it’s been a whole day… and no signings? Reese is slacking.
So for anyone who thinks we overpayed for Antrel Rolle:
at least we didn’t give him what Dunta Robinson got from Atlanta. Whew, makes 5 years $37 mill seem like a steal.
Wow $25.5 mill guaranteed for a mediocre CB…
preach!
I wouldn’t be surprised (or upset) if we took a safety in the 3rd round. I think Michael Johnson is below average in every aspect of the game and can be upgraded. I don’t remember the last time he made a big play but I can remember plenty of poor plays from the past two seasons. Drafting a rookie in the 3rd or 4th would push CC Brown off the roster and would give Michael Johnson competition for that 3rd spot.
Maybe there thought for CC Brown is in goal line packages now where is coverage is less of a liability and his asset as a guy who can hit comes into play…
But Rouse was better at that…and cheaper…
Cautiously optimistic. The contract was a lot better [for new york] then I thought it would be. Like what I’m hearing from him and its an improvement to our safety core. I just hope this works out.
I’d love to know who Lombardi’s source is. I really can’t stand him and it’s not by coincidence that he was once employed by the Eagles. Thy guy yaps just to sound like he knows something no one else does. Can’t stand the guy.
Must have missed it….what are you talking about Turk?
We should bring in Raheem Brock so we can ship Osi’s a’ss out of town…
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Lombardi-Falcons-sign-a-CB-but-it-doesnt-help.html
Osi Umenyiora to Raheem Brock is a massive downgrade…
Word.
Fo’ shizzle…
Troy it’s not massive. It is a downgrade, but you pick up a second round pick and save some money.
And by the way, if Alex Smith was so much better than David Carr, why are three teams competing for his services, one of which is the team that has Alex Smith. Mike Holmgren likes him more than Anderson and Quinn, and I think Holmgren knows a thing or two about QB’s…
The Giants signed safety Antrel Rolle. They might also have signed Wildcat quarterback antrel Rolle.
In his time with the Cardinals, Rolle took a number of snaps as quarterback of a Wildcat formation. Now, the Giants and Tom Coughlin are not known for that kind of a system. About the closest they’ve come in recent years has been a direct snap to Ahmad Bradshaw on a running play. But Rolle said he would “absolutely” love to be involved in some offensive gameplanning.
“I think that’s going to come from showing them exactly what I can do,” he said. “Once I’m here with this organization, they will get a pretty good feel of what kind of athlete I am. I can throw the ball a million miles, I think everyone knows that at this point. Whether they are going to use me for that, I don’t know yet. I hope so because I think it brings another dimension to football. It creates a mismatch. It’s also something that can excite the fans and it can be a momentum changer.”
When the Cardinals played the Giants last season, in fact, Rolle threw one. It was an incompletion for Larry Fitzgerald that didn’t show up in the final stats because of a holding penalty against the Cardinals. But for the Giants who went over that game with intensity when scouting Rolle, it stood out.
“I remember very well the night we played Arizona here how well he played against us,” Tom Coughlin said. “Of course, he’s a Pro Bowl player. He has outstanding range and athleticism. He ran a couple of wildcat plays throughout the year. He’s a very talented guy who was a high school quarterback and running back, so he’s a multi-talented guy. And you can see the intangibles that he brings to the table in terms of his communication skills and his energy. He’s one of those upbeat guys that you really do enjoy being around. And he’s very talented.”
Brandon, where’s that from?

I’d crap my pants if Coughlin let’s Rolle play QB…
newsday
Hmmm, let’s see…
… a head coach who is practically allergic to trickery is going to take the ball out of his franchise QB’s hand in order to run a gimmick play.
Yeah, that’s going to happen. Maybe sometime around Week 37 of the 2010 season.
Simon – Did you actually read the article on Carr going to San Fran? It said he’d be the #2 and would be brought in to push Shaun Hill off the roster as they’re still developing Nate Davis. Alex Smith is still the starter.
And yes, it’s a massive downgrade IMO. Brock has never shown the pass rushing abilities that Osi has.
http://www.examiner.com/x-2712-San-Francisco-49ers-Examiner~y2010m3d5-David-Carr-and-49ers-scheduled-to-meet-this-weekend
“The Bakersfield native would come in and serve as the #2 quarterback in the system.”
http://www.49erswebzone.com/content/news/view.php?id=25042
“If signed, Carr would likely be in camp for depth and competition. The 49ers have already stated that Alex Smith is their man for 2010″
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=nfl&id=1576
“Carr is scheduled to take a physical for the Niners today and it looks as if a deal should get hammered out. Carr made an average of $1.8 million per year in his two seasons as Eli Manning’s backup. He will likely battle Shaun Hill for the No. 2 spot in San Fran.”
Like I said, he’d be the back-up. Oh and I never said Alex Smith was “so much better,” I said Carr wouldn’t be much of an improvement, if an improvement at all.
They both suck, who cares…
Sure they’ll bring him in as the #2 but knowing Carr’s situation he’s not going to teams with set starting QBs. Look at SF, AZ and Cleveland. They may say he’s not coming in to compete with their #1 but he isn’t leaving the cushy job of the Giants #2 in order to go to one of those franchises just to stay the #2. Now thats not to say that if he goes to one of those 3 teams that he’ll automatically win the starting job but he is only going there because the chances of getting a shot to take over is much higher than here in NY. And the 49ers especially would be dumb to say Smith is being replaced because then he’ll mentally give up. I’m sure they’d love for him to progress and be their guy but to act like Carr would sign there to fight for a #3 spot when he already has our #2 spot is just not a good argument.
Lol kerv…amen!
Um bringin n brock 4 osi is so a massive downgrade!fefellas osi aint a bumb guys so dnt act like ud be fine if he was gone. We would feel it!
Agree and disagree. I think Osi needs to go. His attitude wont change. However Brock is no where near the talent Osi is. However I see Simon’s point because I too would like to see Osi traded, especially with Peppers off the market now, and Brock would be a guy who we know can play and can take a backup role and has experience in a Fewell type defense. But he’s no where near the player Osi is, attitude and all.
Osi has the proverbial double whammy… bad ‘tude… and not playing well. Oh, and he wants more money… make it a triple.
Yeah, strike 3…he needs to go. With Peppers off the market Osi should be a very good alternative to those teams looking for an impact DE. And since he’s ours we know he wont be a Redskin or Eagle. I hope RJ trades him.
TT love your opinions and posts but “fefellas osi aint a bumb guys” LOL…what is bumb? LOL fefella it’s bum j/k LMAO
Yea i dont know about our OL getting old….McKenzie and Ohara yes… but we have Diehl, Snee, and Beatty…all young guys in the prime of their careers or just starting out. Add one mre quality Olineman via the first 3 rds this year to develop and we will continue to have great succsess up front. I also like the idea of kicking Diehl inside to G starting beatty at LT and having richie be the back up.
Ohara still has a couple good years left in him and if Mckenzie stays healthy he will give us another quality year.
I think McKenzie has one or two good years left but thats it. His back problems will only get worse. I love LOVE the idea of moving Beatty to LT and DD back to LG. I hope it happens.
I am worried about DT…could realy be a huge problem this year if Canty doesnt come to play. Cofield is solid vs the run… Bernard needs to step up, but i doubt he will…
LB and DT, round 1 and 2 this year. Bank on it. Unless a quality OL slips
I think a lot of people are forgetting about jay alford. I know he’s coming back from injury, but he could really help out our D-line problems with his motor.
McKenzie is 30… O’Hara 32… they’re not old…especially for OL.
LTFan – I agree with you on why Carr is looking at those teams. The Browns are releasing Derek Anderson and some are saying Quinn is also on the chopping block (I personally doubt that but they are the Browns). The 9ers have questions at QB although Smith played well for them last season and they seem intent on giving him one more shot at it. I didn’t say he was going there to be the #3 but he is going there to be the #2. I never said Carr would never start again (Chris Redman was starting last year) but my only point was that a lot of people here overrate him. There was some talk before the season started that he could be traded for a 2nd round pick. Some think he can be an average to slightly above average starter in this league when he’s never been anything but below average. That’s all I was really saying and I’m done with it now. There are few things I could care less about than David Carr.
Like Krow said, 30 isn’t old for OL. We consistently see guys play well into their 30’s at those positions (especially at center). I do think it’d be a good idea to grab a young guy at some point but I don’t think we’re in panic mode yet.
I haven’t seen this mentioned yet. I apologize if I just missed it.
Fred Robbins-DL-Giants Mar. 6 – 6:46 pm et
The Rams are reportedly finalizing a deal with free agent DT Fred Robbins.
Reuniting with coach Steve Spagnuolo? The Rams aim to get bigger upfront, and Robbins (6′4/325) would provide a presence at the 3-technique tackle. If healthy, Robbins would be a boon to the team’s run defense.
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Damn…one of my all-time favorite Giants.
Peace out, Freddy.
Cards try to replace rolle : trade fourth round pick this yeat and seventh next year to jets for kerry rhodes
I’m a little ripped right now, but I wanted to chime in real quick: FF55 was right-seems like there’s a TON of suitors interested in Carr
I can’t believe the Giants sometimes. Holding on to Bernard and letting Robbins go. Holding onto CC Brown and letting Rouse go. Holding on to Darcy Johnson and letting Mike Matthews go.
1) Bernard is still under contract. Yeah, he sucked last year but we came to learn that he was playing with a torn labrum, same as Tuck. He probably still sucks, but there’s certainly no harm in bringing him to camp to see what he’s got. If he plays down to expectations, well, the Giants can simply cut him with no penalty and move on.
2) Robbins is not under contract. Much as I love Fat Freddy, I’m relieved that Reese has chosen not to re-sign a 33-year old DT who recently underwent microfracture surgery. As I’ve said a billion times already, if we can’t find anything better at DT than what Robbins would provide, best steel yourselves for another 8-8 season… at best. Moreover, why should Reese enable Coughlin by providing him with another aging vet-pet who he would opt to play in lieu of the DT we will surely be getting in the draft?
Having said all that, I wish Freddy nothing but the best. The guy played his ass off for the Giants and was easily one of my five-ten favorite players on the team over the past few years. Glad to see him reunited with Spags and hope he does well there.
Simon,
In fairness, MM went to the Pats, got cut and hasn’t picked up elsewhere. So how good could he be? At least Darcy was a decent receiving threat. But now we have Pascoe and I think he’ll be a better blocking TE than MM ever was.
This blog is great. How did you come up witht he idea? 7 4 5
Wow we are becoming alarmingly thin at DT. Canty and Cofield are the only two deal reliable DTs, and Canty is not even that reliable right now. Bernard and Alford are HUGE question marks right now.
Welcome to the chorus, tman.
I’ve been singing this same song for, what, 4-5 months now. I’ll continue to handle the bass parts, you can sing baritone.
Kujonicus– In all fairness, Matthews was picked up by the Lions and is still on their roster…
You guys forget, we also got a late round draft pick for Matthews. Would I liked to have him on the roster over Darcy Johnson? Yes. Would it have saved the season? Most likely not with that defense. He probably wasn’t in the plans for the future and we may now have a better blocker in Bear. Let’s use the pick and move on.
I may be wrong on this but didn’t we lose that pick since the Pats cut him before a specific date…someone fill me in
Correct… no pick.
The Giants and Patriots are some of the better talent evaluators in the NFL. If neither of them though Matthews was worth keeping then I’d have to think he simply wasn’t as good as some make him out to be.
BTW was anyone else having trouble getting to the site? For about a half hour there I couldn’t connect.
Yup, had trouble connecting as well (and lord knows, I need this site as a procrastination tool). I too will miss Fat Freddy, and I wish him luck in St. Louis. The Rams will likely be terrible again, but Freddy could wreak some havoc on a d-line with Suh (or McCoy) and Long.
MM might be a dark horse candidate for a bid to the G101 HOF.
Not making any excuse for Bernard. He was a huge disappointment last season. However, he was hurt. At his age you can see him not doing anything with a Labrum injury. Tuck is much younger and was a shell of himself with the same injury. Not that we should expect him to be great but he had a very productive career up till last season so as a 3rd or 4th DT I think Bernard will be more than enough once healthy. We will definitely add a rookie to the mix as well and hopefully a good one. I honestly think with one addition to the DT core we will be just fine there.
TT-I agree that Ohara and McKenzie aren’t old for OL but I still think health wise McKenzie is on his way out. I give him 1 or 2 years of good production. Back problems just dont go away especially while carrying weight like that. Personally, I hope he’s gone sooner than later.
Wouldn’t mind bringing in former Jets and Patriots TE Chris Baker to sure up our TE core. I always liked him when he was on the Jets. Thoughts?
We’ve got Boss, Beckum and Pascoe. One is a receiving threat, one is a blocker and the other is an H-back. I think we’re all set.
Anyone see Haz around? Miss his input.
Major concern for Kenny Phillips within the Giants organization that his knee won’t fully heal. Right now, inside his arthritic knee, it’s “bone on bone.”
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Lombardi-Falcons-sign-a-CB-but-it-doesnt-help.html
Ouch. I’m not sure how much validity there is to that comment, but one thing’s for sure.
As medical reports have shown, no player/person comes back better from patellofemoral arthritis.
With patellofemoral arthritis, there’s no getting better. It’s more of preventing his arthritis and knee from getting worse. It’s not like Tommy John or some other kind of surgery.
The key thing for Phillips is that he’s young, so with proper surgery and rehab, he’ll be fine. But he won’t be 100%. He range maybe limited and as we saw in Matsui (who has arthritic knee), he may have to drain is knee or some sort of treatment.
This injury is very delicate and results are very mixed. Phillips may have been better off if he tore his ACL or something.
Let’s just hope that for 3-5 years, he’s 90% of what he would be, because he certainty isn’t going to be 100% and to even think that, is simply foolish.
Lombardi is full of s@#t.
Yeah. Unless Lombardi has information that a bunch of orthopedists and other people in the organization have put out there, I’d take this with a grain of salt. Sure, there’s probably some concern. But I’m sure KP will alleviate that once he gets back. Still, wouldn’t mind us going after Nate Allen or Chad Jones in the second.
I’d rather trade our second round pick to the bears for Olsen before drafting a Safety unless its Barry or Mays(which isn’t going to happen). We should take a safety at the earliest 3rd round. I like Chancellor in the 4th though.
This is an utter non-story.
Of course the Giants are “concerned” about Phillips. As is every True Blue fan. I don’t think even the most cockeyed optimists here were expecting KP to step out onto the field in Week One and immediately start tearing sh!t up. This season I was hoping for – at best – a KP at 75% coming off major surgery; roughly more or less what we saw out of Osi, Cofield & Robbins last year.
But, really, my speculations mean nothing. As do Lombardi’s, the coach’s and even the Giant doctors’. The only question tht matters heading into the season is: Is he medically cleared to play? And all the indications I’ve heard suggest that he will be. Which means all any of us can do is just sit back and wait to see what he does on the field, as is the case with every player returning from injury. His first few defensive series’ will tell us volumes more than the interminable rumors and speculation we’ll be subjected to between now and opening day.
norm – Not sure if his speculations that it’s “bone on bone” are true. I believe the Giants did catch this pretty early.
However, one thing’s is pretty certain.
From what I’ve read and from what I gather, no one comes back 100%.
If a player tears his ACL, he undergoes re-constructive knee surgery.
With patellofemoral arthritis, there’s no straight surgery or treatment to get this fixed.
Various treatments have been done with mixed results.
We saw Matsui having to drain his knee and was relegated to strictly DH duties; his mobility wasn’t great to begin with, and with the arthritis, his mobility got severely limited.
Phillips is young and given that the Giants detected this pretty early (I believe), everything maybe okay.
But he’s not going to be the All-Pro from week 1, like you said.
This season will be kind of like a “rehab season” for him. He’ll see how his knee reactions to the wear and tear of an NFL season.
2012 will bring a better picture.
But he certainly isn’t going to have the range he once did.
Look at Tom Brady and ever person that underwent a major surgery.
They’re never fully back in year 1.
I remember reading a quote from Carson Palmer that he didn’t feel quite comfortable first season back from his knee surgery.
Same thing for Brady. Something seemed off.
Brady actually had one of his best seasons as a pro this year. Of course, his 07 season was his absolute best but this season was probably #2. People think because the Pats struggled that Brady struggled but it’s quite the opposite really.
As for KP, all we can do is wait. Speculation is pointless. We heard his career was over, then it wasn’t but it’d be tough to come back from, then he was going to be ready for OTAs, now Lombardi is saying it’s back to square one. We’re just going to have to be patient.
“I could play tomorrow” I’ll go with that one =)
i sure hope the giants r dun at safety. rolle is a nice player but my man cc is gonna have a bounce back year in2010!!!
lol…nice.
I hope KP is back on the field next season at at least 90%. The kid has so much potential =[
You’ll know everything you need to know about Kenny Phillips by the time the 46th pick comes. If we’ve added a safety by then, well, prepare for the worst.
From PFT…
“Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union reports that Kampman has agreed to terms with the Jaguars.”
Better than Philly…

I am tossing this up here because a percentage of the winning bid will be donated to Giants 101!
I have seen this flag in person and looked it over myself. It’s in good condition and from what I can tell, all signatures are real. The man who collected the signatures is a long-time Giants fan who brought it to training camp/preseason games every year.
It’s a good collectible, especially with Harry Carson’s name being on it.
Happy bidding, guys.
The Cleveland Browns have already traded one defensive lineman this off-season, shipping Corey Williams to the Detroit Lions. Could they trade another?
Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that they could and Shaun Rogers could be gone.
Pluto doesn’t name a source for the report, but writes that the Browns’ coaching staff dislikes Rogers’ tendency to freelance, rather than cover the area he is assigned.
And the report says the Browns think they’d be fine with the defensive linemen remaining on the roster, including Ahtyba Rubin, Robaire Smith, Kenyon Coleman, C.J. Mosley and Brian Schaefering.
That doesn’t mean Rogers is definitely on the move. But if the report is to be believed, the Browns are open to it.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/07/report-browns-could-trade-shaun-rogers/
I was just about to post this. Rogers certainly is a presence in the middle. Admittedly I haven’t really seen him play in years though.
All I know about Shaun Rogers is that he’s a huge mother f***er and he almost killed Eli last year when we played the Browns. I remember him landing strangely on Eli’s throwing shoulder and thinking “Oh dear Christ!” Not sure what he would cost, and he’s certainly failed to live up to expectations, but he would be a sure-fire upgrade at DT if only because of his enormous size. I’ve had the chance to watch a few Browns games over the years because of my best friend Dennis being a huge fan of theirs, despite being from Staten Island (is anyone surprised that something irrational and oily came from the landfill?). Rogers was supposed to be a monster for them, and the fact that he hasn’t could be attributable to his presence on a putrid defense.
I think JR should take a look at him. He’d replace Robbins and would allow our rookie to be slowly acclamated into our system.
It really depends on what Cleveland wants for him. There’s no way I would want him for a 1st or 2nd rounder. I’m even kinda iffy for a 3rd. And interesting prospect though…
How many times do we need to go over this? Phillips doesnt have Patellafemoral Arthritis!!!!!! Why dont people listen? Same thing with NFL network, they keep bringing it up but its not the case.
I heard from someone with specific knowledge of Phillips’ surgery, and that source said the saftey had a quarter-sized osteochondral defect on his patella that received microfracture, but the knee looked good otherwise. The source also said that the term patellofemoral arthritis used by the Giants was probably too strong of a term or the result of an over-read on the MRI. Bottom line from this source: Phillips should be back next year.
http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/giants/t-rock-s-take-on-the-giants-1.811990?tags=kenny+phillips
So can we please stop saying that he has patellafemoral arthritis? Please?
News Flash… Kenny Phillips dead at 23 from patellafemoral arthritis.
LMAO!
Krow
You are one sick puppy…..LMAO!!!
Krow you have me LMFAO ……. AGAIN!!!
Rolle and Phillips are such a cute couple:
“He’s never going to leave my side now because I’m desperately going to need him,” Rolle said. “And we’re going to need each other, be my partner, side by side.”
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/2010/03/06/2010-03-06_rolle_vows_he_and_phillips_will_be_dynamic_duo.html#ixzz0hVNG7o4d
might be enough to make coughlin quit, you know hes too old school for this kinda stuff
i thought it was a dont ask dont tell sorta thing..
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
LOL–my favorite saying when it comes to people talkin bout gay folks
What axr29 said. It amazes me that after a number of us have clarified Phillips’ situation based on actual knowledge about the condition or the specific operation, even this site, filled with intelligent people, continues this fiction.
I posted something in the past two weeks based on information from one of the leading sports orthopedists in the world. Conclusion? Phillips should be fine and be able to have a very successful next 7-8 years but probably won’t play into his 30’s. His only caveat was that with the knee every one is different and there are no guarantees. But he specifically told me that for a safety having had this problem is BETTER than an ACL tear.
So people should stop acting as if the sky may be falling. Will Phillips be 100%, or 95% in September? I doubt it. Will he play? Probably. Should he be at 95% by the time the critical part of the season rolls around? Well, if his knee isn’t a lot different from others that have had this kind of surgery, yes.
exactly. once the defect was fixed, he should be fine.
7 or 8 years is a long time in the world of medicine. By that time who knows what they’ll be able to do for Kenny. You’d be surprised.
robot leg?
Tynes would get the first one of those.
id give it to Tmac. more important
HGH?
by then DR’s may find a way to Keep Gerris Wilkenson on the field for more than 5-6 games a year..Oh badda bing!
Sorry FF55yrs, I kid cause I love…
Did anyone here doubt for a second that Fat Freddie would end up with the Rams next year? It was a total no brainer, he can give Spags some veteren depth and what better classy pro’s pro could he have to mentor young guys like Carriker, Suh/Mccoy and Long on the DLine then FRob? I love the guy and wish him the best. If Porky Pig Pierce ever heals up, he will be there hammering Buffetts in the Metro StLoius area as well..Bank on it
Lots of food options for Fatboy in St. Louis…
I see him ODing on BRBQ
Could not be happier at the way Free agency has worked out so far..Peppers, Dansby, Kampman all end up not signing with the Eagles or Skins, Giants get a very good young Safety and dont spend money on Kampmen and his recovering ACL and all this time not one peep from ol Jerruh “Nip Tuck” Jones…I kind of like this no CBA deal. It is going to keep more players on their original team for a little longer. I hope they write this 6 yr UFA thing into the next CBA
I’d love Shaun Rogers as a Giant next year.. I just don’t see it happening though. Cleveland is most likely looking for players and we don’t have many to give up. It’s not worth a 1st or 2nd as Krow mentioned and I doubt they would do it for any pick less than that.
This just keeps getting worse:
As Jeter learned, he began to soar through the Yankees’ system. He tore through three levels of the minors in 1994 and started 1995 at Triple-A Columbus, where he became pals with Posada. The two were called up in September and lived at the same New Jersey hotel, but played sparingly because the Yanks were in a playoff race.
“We rented one car and went everywhere together,” Posada recalls. “We drove to the park together, went out to eat together.”

G101: The Premiere Giants Blog for those Who Love the Log.
Not that there’s anything wrong with it, of course…people’s sexual preferences are nobody’s business but their own!
Just throwing something crazy out there–what about our #15, Osi and Hixon for their #8 and Rogers? Would they go for that?
maybe. if thats the case i move canty to DE and just let cofield rogers and alford play DT.
Canty would be the guy that Cleveland would want for Rogers or Sintim and I wouldnt give up either of those guys for a DT on the down side of his career
Cleveland plays a 3-4 and would have no use for Osi…
The fact that Robbbins is gone and the signing of Rolle are good things.
I have no ill will for Fred. But truthfully, I only saw him blow up the line of scrimage once last year. Now if Bernard works out fine. If not ship him out.
These developments clarify the draft priorities even further. But one thing comes clearly into focus. We do not have to take a safety at 15.
Now if Berry is available at 15, and JR is really unsure about KP, jump on it. Not only can Berry play safety, this stud can play corner too.
He would only add to the flexability of the secondary. The other choice would be Mays. Again flexability, LB or SS in one package.
Still got to feel linbacker will be the pick at 15 if certian players are available. I am betting on either McClain or Weatherspoon.
no way in hell that Berry is anywhere near 15…
Okay, so now that people have been able to digest the signing (even Jim and norm, who make have first had to almost throw up before choking it down), you should think about team needs in a reasonable way.
I must have said three dozen times over the years that the thing everyone should remember is that you don’t need great players at every position. Obviously, you can’t get that even if you want it. So where, among the remaining possible holes in the team, can Reese afford to think about addressing them down the road rather than immediately (ie. free agency and the draft)?
Last year I argued that everyone was hysterical about our wide receivers situation and suggested that with a good draft pick the wide receivers would be a strong part of the team (I suggested an ESPN show for late season titled “The Giants Wide Receivers: Who Knew?”). Frankly, I think most of the doom-and-gloom around here was based upon received wisdom (ie. reading too many analysts and blogs) and not enough experience projecting what steps forward young receivers could make.
This year I am inclined to think that the level of hysteria about our linebackers if too high, and the level of concern about our defensive line is too low.
I think Clint Sintim projects as a great SAM if he can learn to become even average in coverage because he is a proven passrusher and big enough to seal off his side against the run once he has his technique down. I wish he had been given more snaps last season. Shame on Coughlin for that mistake, but I think he will take a big step forward this season and should be terrific by his third season.
I think Jon Goff proved inconsistent but very promising, which is about right for a first-time MLB in the Giants’ defense. He took incorrect first steps too often on counter-plays and was, therefore, taken out of the lanes too easily thanks to his inexperience at making reads (I should say at recognizing “tells” among the linemen that their initial move was intended to get him moving incorrectly…it takes some time to understand those subtleties). I suspect he will be a lot better than anyone else on this site thinks.
I think Kehl and Boley between them, and perhaps Wilkinson, can tie down the WILL position pretty well. There’s speed there, allowing fewell to use them well in his kind of scheme.
So while I would love to get a potentially great linebacker in the draft (and I have made it clear I believe Weatherspoon is potentially great, and McClain might be too but still has to show me more), I think we will be okay at linebacker already as long as Reese finds at least a later round pick based on athleticism and potential that hadn’t yet been reached in college. I would be really, really, pleased if he picks Weatherspoon, but I don’t think that is a life-or-death pick.
Now, on the other hand, I think the defensive line is still in need of help, and other than another DT no one seems to notice. Is everyone else on Giants 101 happy to go into the season with Dave Tollefson as the #4 DE and a potentially unhappy Osi? I’m not. Yes, Canty is a “question mark” at tackle, although I think he much less so than most around here think. How will Alford be? Well, he should be at least adequate and then a year from now hopefully more than that. Bernard? Never intended to be more than depth and good against the run with an occasional penetration into the backfield. Cofield? Solid against the run, not much of a pocket-collapser. But I think you could reasonably argue that at this moment the 4-deep defensive tackle rotation is on more solid grounds than the 4-deep defensive end rotation.
But then, I think Tollefson isn’t very good. Good special-teamer, lousy DE even if he is high-energy.
So, despite the consensus around here, I’m not at the moment convinced that the linebacker and DT spots are so weak that taking a potentially great passrusher ahead of either of those supposed “needs” wouldn’t make sense (especially because either Osi or Kiwi could be gone in a few seasons). JPP, Brandon Graham, and others who would be available at #15 might easily become Reese’s targets.
Now, on offense, depending upon what the team knows about the health of their running backs (especially Bradshaw and Brown, whom I still find hard to believe is expected back “at full strength”) that position may be a need. Starting to bring in younger O-linemen is a need, but not all that urgent because the core O-line still has a lot of good years left in it after a down year in 2009. Still, there’s no doubt Reese will draft at least one O-lineman and that could come in the first round because there will be at least 2-3 available there who could become anchors of an O-line for a decade or more. I still find Iupati very interesting. And there are at least 4-5 others too.
I don’t think there are any other “needs”, but on offense we currently have only two “game-breakers: Nicks and Manningham. Adding a third seems like it could be raised to the level of a “need” in an increasingly offense-favored league. So Spiller and Best enter the conversation.
In any case, the above is just meant to cool down the “certainty” that seems to be building that Reese will pick a DT or linebacker with his first pick. That’s clearly an option, but my guess is that he’s going to go after the player he thinks is left on the board who could be “great”, regardless of position as long as he fits on of the criteria I noted above. It’s also meant to calm down any insistence that we “must” get Kirk Morrison or some other veteran MLB in free agency. I’m not sure he’s much of an upgrade based on what I’ve read over the past few days (again, I’ve never seen him play so my opinion is suspect here). I’m not afraid to go with Goff (or Blackburm or Wilkinson if one of them can beat him out for the job, which I doubt).
I’m still LMAO…
Was just driving around, running a few errands, idly surfing through the car radio when I landed on a sportstalk show where the host was interviewing, I think, one of the AZ Cardinal broadcasters. The host was trying to get a read on how the folks in AZ have reacted to the mass hemorrhaging of talent there over the past 72 hrs or so.
Well, the Card mouthpiece – he was a funny guy. I fact, I’m pretty sure he must have gotten most of his material from Jim Stoll and I here on G101. He said the deal Rolle got from New York was more indicative of the Giants “desperation” than it was of his talent, which he characterized as “just average.” He cited Rolle’s suspect coverage skills and referred back to the first play of overtime of the GB-AZ playoff game in which Rodgers badly overthrew a receiver (Jennings?) who had blown past Rolle by a good ten yards. But Mr. Cardinal saved his best for last – outdoing the cynicism of even myself and the esteemed Mr. Stoll – when he said that Kerry Rhodes represented a “HUGE upgrade” over Rolle. Great line; I wish I’d thought of it.
He was slightly less complimentary in his assessments of the departed Dansby and Boldin, but I was laughing too hard to really catch most of the details.
After the interview was over, the host was actually speechless for a second o two before muttering something along the lines of “Well, I guess he’s a glass half full kind guy…”
Priceless stuff.
sour grapes..They are finished for the next 3-4 years..You cant loose talent like Warner, Dansby, Rolle, and Boldin and not take a BIG step back…Rhodes is a very nice pick up and at that Price I wish the Giants had looked into him as well. He would be unbelievable insurance for KP and would push both CC to the UFL and MJ to the 4th Safety spot where they both belong
Thank you axr29 for repeating that long past update on KP’s condition. I
remember reading that some time ago but still allowed the more gloomy
predictions to cloud the dream I have of he and Rolle being a great
safety team for us.
Kerry Rhodes is about as good as Michael Johnson. Maybe worse
no way man..Rhodes is WAY better then MJ, he just had a down year last year
His only decent year was 06. He sucks. I as exaggerating a bit with the MJ thing but Rhodes BLOWS
really? I always thought he was very solid. I cant think of a better possible 3rd safety in the NFL
Yeah, no doubt the Cards are “happy” to lose Warner, Boldin, Rolle and Dansby. Just like the Giants were “happy” to lose Plax.
I’d give up Canty for Rogers in that scenario, Demo. Call me crazy, but I’m wary of how Canty translates to the DT position and think that Rogers, who isn’t old but isn’t young, could be the sort of player that Robbins has been for us, only much bigger and more apt to draw double blockers.
FF55- Very provacative post. Have to chew on it a bit before I reach an opinion
Norm- Sounds like that AZ guy had a mouth full of sour grapes.
I wouldnt trade Canty for Rogers. Rogers is 4 and 1/2 years older and has had 2 consecutive years of declining productivity…Rogers also has been in and out of the Dog House in both Detroit and Cleveland. Trust me you dont see 2 teams looking to deal that dominant a physical force unless there is mad bagage. Also it seems that next to nobody on this site understands how Good Chris Canty really is. Everyone looks at the lost season last year where he was hurt the entire year (first time in his career he miised a game) and are willing to right him off as a bust. Trust me, he IS going to be a force this year.
Rhodes is more concerned with his future acting career than football
Kujo- Yeah Rodgers is pretty tempting i must admit
Has anyone heard one National media personality mention the Rolle signing as a move to make the GIANTS more athletic in the secondary to help new DC Fewell?
No.
Seriously, that is just lazy. You know the guys defense creates a lot of turn overs and is a cover 2 system which requires pretty athletic safeties. Having two in Phillips and now Rolle is where it starts (as well as a good D-Line).
I am I wrong or is that basically what it looks like?
DEMO- Yeah i have alot of faith in Canty dude. One of the few
Draft Spoon at #15… best available DT at #46.
Kerry Rhodes is a girl scout. Rex Ryan benched his ass midseason for not being physical enough.
Also, Shaun Rogers hasn’t declined the past two years. He was playing NT in a 3-4 so naturally, his numbers dipped. He was still very disruptive but lost his job due to injury when Rubin stepped in and played out of his mind.
So what’s a fair price for Rogers ya figure?
We should start a pool for “which future practice squad QB do we pick in rounds 5-7″
Tebow. A couple of pre-season games with him behind center ought to shut up all the Eli haters.
please take sinorice they did take tim carter at one time
I, for one, expect Canty to have a very, very, good 2010. A lot of folks who were busy saying he cannot make the transition to a 4-3 are going to have to eat their words.
He’s a big part of why I say that DT isn’t as bad as most assume. Reese should draft someone there, but it is not necessarily one of the highest priorities. Canty, Cofield, Alford and Bernard (with Tuck playing inside on many obvious passing downs so both Osi and Kiwi can be on the field) is a lot better 4-man depth chart than most teams have. Yes, the DTs were awful in 2009, but there wasn’t a single one playing healthy, and Alford was on IR. There will be a rookie added to that group and one of the resulting five won’t make the final roster, but once that is squared away another major 2009 weakness should be a LOT stronger in 2010.
It is easy to segue from “we had lots of injuries and bad coaching” to “these guys suck, let’s get rid of all of them and start over from a small core”, but that easy route happens to be dead wrong.
Hello Everyone, been a while since i posted since i got swamped with midterms at school. I’m excited about the Rolle signing but not 100% sold yet. Nice to be back though and the site look awesome!!
I have high hopes for Canty as well. That may very well be the kiss of death for him since the last time I said that Alford ended up on IR. But seriously, I was most excited about his signing last year and expected him to have a big impact. He got hurt, it happens. Doesn’t change the fact that I think he can be a force in the middle of our defense.
Check out this site.

Its run by some Giants fanatics in Brazil lol.
Ha, my Potuguese is a little weak, but I can guess what this means…
Kenny Phillips + Antrel Rolle = ?
37 milhões de doláres
Dude, you should totally partner up with that site. Just from knowing the material and knowing Espanol, I can make out what they are saying and I can probably learn Portuguese by follwing that site.
Apparently Rolle wants to run the Wildcat for us…

My God, this is a tennis or golf day. What a beautiful day in New York!!
So if any of you are at all interested in theater, I went yesterday to spend thirteen hours at the Signature Theater Company’s (it’s 42nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenue) presentation of Horton Foote’s Orphan’s Home Cycle. It was three 3-hour plays (three acts each, two 10-minute intermissions), and two breaks for meals. Fantastic theater. A truly great experience. And the three plays can be seen on separate occasions rather than the marathon to which I went. Not only that, there are a number of $20 tickets available thanks to some sort of subsidy provided by American Express, so there’s no financial excuse not to go. Going to things like this set of performances is one of the reasons to live in New York.
Damn you FF55… damn you for remind me how much I miss New York. I am stuck having to watch lard-butted mid-westerners eating deep dish “pizza”, talking about how Cutlet is their new savior…. and that’s the cultural part of the program.
I can’t see Rolle being allowed to run the Wildcat except for one or two times in order to force defensive coordinators to game plan for it and spend some valuable practice time on it each week.
First, why take the ball out of Eli’s hands? Second, why risk injury to one of your starting safeties who isn’t used to getting pounded? Third, our coach is a Neanderthal who probably thinks the only wildcat he’s interested in is a dead one the dog brought home.
Everyone keeps talking about Mcclain/Spoon in the first and a DT in the second but what do you guys think of Dan Williams in the first and a falling Spikes in the second? I’d love spoon or Mcclain but id be happy with both options.
axr29 – You guys are completely wrong.
Phillips21.com is Kenny Phillip’s official website.

See the article headlined:
Phillips Has Surgery
Guess what it says on KP’s official website:
Phillips, the Giants’ first-round pick (31st overall) in 2008 out of Miami, had surgery today to relieve patellofemoral arthritis in his left knee.
It says:
patellofemoral arthritis
Not some BS that Tom Rock posted from an alleged “source.”
Do you think KP would post that news on his own website if it was false? If it was osteochondral defect, don’t you think he’d put that instead of arthritis?
And notice how Tom Rock is the only one that mentions “osteochondral defect.”
Either he’s the lone genius or the lone idiot. I’m betting on the latter.
Just my two cents, but I think Tom Rock’s garbage.
I’d much rather read Mike Garafolo or the writers on Giants101.
fanfor55years – “It amazes me that after a number of us have clarified Phillips’ situation based on actual knowledge about the condition or the specific operation, even this site, filled with intelligent people, continues this fiction.”
Read my post above. KP put on his own website, that he had surgery to relieve patellofemoral arthritis. Not a “quarter-sized osteochondral defect.”
“I posted something in the past two weeks based on information from one of the leading sports orthopedists in the world.”
Can you provide me the link?
Second on that, it’s ignorant to base your judgment on the opinion of just one “leading sports orthopedists.”
It’s prudent to take the studies and reading from several sources.
Take for example a Dr. Joseph Maroon, the Pittsburgh Steelers neurosurgeon. He’s a highly respected neurologist and if you believe just his word, you’d come to the conclusion that there’s no correlations because football and increase in concussions.
He calls it “pure speculation.”
But we know that that’s utterly false. Just look at retired players and see how they’re in dementia and can’t remember clearly.
I’ve read several reports and studies on patellofemoral arthritis. Not just one opinion.
They all come to the conclusion that there’s no set treatment for it and various treatments have been used with mixed results. It’s an iffy injury and the only good side for Phillips is that he’s young and that the injury was caught early.
Phillips went to Tha U. You think he can even spell patellofemoral arthritis ?
Someone else wrote that, not Phillips himself.
Phillips is still looking for the ON button on his computer…
His first attempt was patellofemuthafuker.
Why do you think they all call it Tha U? Its because nobody there can spell University. If Miami wasn’t so simple to spell, they would have gone to USC.
bpeter, the source for what I wrote is Dr. Steven Nicholas, whose father and he are among the most respected sports orthopedists in the entire country. He was NOT Phillips’ doctor but he knows the guys who were. According to him the odds are VERY much in Phillips’ favor and the use of patellofemoral arthritis to describe his condition is misleading. First of all, that condition covers a very, very, broad variety of defects; and second, the actual condition of Phillips’ knee doesn’t really fit that diagnosis. In any case, what he has heard is that the operation was very successful and that there’s no reason to believe Phillips cannot play at a high level for 7-8 years. He doesn’t think he’ll be playing in his 30’s, but I can live with that. The one caveat he threw in was that every single knee is different and so no one can predict with more than a certain degree of certainty what Phillips’ future will be just based upon medical statistics. But he insists that, based on the statistics and what he has heard (admittedly second-hand), Giants fans should be happy.
btw, all the doctor’s assurances and all of KP’s confidence mean NOTHING until he starts running and cutting at full speed without excessive pain. The results of any sports surgery are a mystery until a player tries to perform.
bpeter – Not trying to start trouble here but you are being a bit of a hypocrite. You’re telling FF55 he’d be ignorant for listening to one guy’s opinion of KP’s injury yet you did exactly that when you used that one random SI dude’s story on NFC East teams moving Mays to LB as “proof” that Mays would be a LB in the NFL. Just sayin’.
Troy, hypocrites on Giants101? No-o-o-o-o-o-o. Impossible. Flip-floppers? Not here. People who change their opinion based on the latest blog they read? Not a chance.
We only have consistent. rational, brilliant people with absolutely no agendas.
Oh, one last thing. If I have to choose one opinion from a highly-respected EXPERT in the subject versus a dozen from journalists who have posted something, I’m taking that expert every time. Since when did Mike G and Ralph “the douche” V become medical authorities? When did the ghost writer for Kenny Phillips’ blog get his medical degree?
So, no, axr29 was not “completely wrong” and I am not naive.
I’m naive. My purity of spirit is reflected in my boyish good looks. I always try to see the best in people. But of course you all know that. I am the Ghandi of Giants101.
That was beautiful, Sahib Krow.
Lol…I can’t read this at all, but I can tell the Brazilian fans had roughly the same reaction to CC Brown getting tendered as most here from this line at the beginning of the article: “me deixou meio confuso”
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that says something along the lines of “I’m confused”.
fanfor55years – Can you provide a link regarding Dr. Steven Nicholas’ opinion about Kenny Phillips?
“First of all, that condition covers a very, very, broad variety of defects; and second, the actual condition of Phillips’ knee doesn’t really fit that diagnosis.”
What exactly is that condition?
“In any case, what he has heard is that the operation was very successful and that there’s no reason to believe Phillips cannot play at a high level for 7-8 years. He doesn’t think he’ll be playing in his 30’s, but I can live with that.”
What reason does he provide that Phillips can’t play at a high level for 7-8 years?
On his point about Phillips probably not playing in his 30’s; I agree that he won’t be able too.
“The one caveat he threw in was that every single knee is different and so no one can predict with more than a certain degree of certainty what Phillips’ future will be just based upon medical statistics. But he insists that, based on the statistics and what he has heard (admittedly second-hand), Giants fans should be happy”
Agreed. Every situation is different and with Phillips is young and this injury was caught early on. Apparently he injured it during the pre-season and then the Giants shut him down after week 2.
What statistics was he looking at?
I know that this isn’t your opinion so it’s hard to answer these question, but I haven’t been able to find any article on what you stated and I’d like to read it myself and critique it instead of me sounding like I’m criticizing you.
fanfor55years and KD – I understand that Kenny Phillips didn’t write that entry and someone else wrote it for him.
But doesn’t it occur to you that in fact, if patellofemoral arthritis was the wrong diagnosis, don’t you think KP or his agent would’ve said something and made changes on his website?
Seems a bit odd.
Take for example this.
Let’s say on of the writes here posts that the Giants have agreed to trade for Shaun Rodgers.
And Dan knows that that’s absolutely false.
Don’t you think he’d state his opinion and post it on his website (Giants101) or would he just let it be?
It’s not like Kenny Phillips listing himself on his website as 6-2 when in fact he’s 6-1. That’s splitting hairs.
Big difference between patellofemoral arthritis and whatever diagnosis it is.
Tonight’s sake’… with noodles, gyoza, and kabocha.
http://www.sakeone.com/sakeone/catalog/index.jsp?cat_id=1015
Sounds great! I had a little too much sake’ on Friday. I was fantastic. But no Sakeone. They can’t ship to NJ. I have a local liquor store working on it though.
You won’t be disappointed sensei.
TroyThorne – My apologizes for sounding like a hypocrite.
But know this. It wasn’t like that’s the only souce that I’ve mentioned.
I’ve stated before how Mayock and other “experts” have mentioned it.
I’ve also stated how during the season Mays looked awful and during the Senior Bowl, he looked just as bad.
So, if that was the only time and the only source that I used and said okay, Taylor Mays is a linebacker based on just one unconfirmed report (SI), then fine.
But I’ve said that based on what Mayock and others have said and based on what I’ve seen, during the season and during the Senior Bowl, he’s a linebacker.
I didn’t base my judgment on just that one report.
I just put that out there, albeit a terrible source, to further my argument.
But the base and the main points of my argument that Mays should be a linebacker doesn’t lie on that report. It lies on what I’ve seen and what Mayock (who I have tremendous respect for) and others have said.
fanfor55years – “I’m taking that expert every time. Since when did Mike G and Ralph “the douche” V become medical authorities? When did the ghost writer for Kenny Phillips’ blog get his medical degree?
So, no, axr29 was not “completely wrong” and I am not naive.”
Tom Rock’s the only person that I can find, that’s stated that Kenny Phillips doesn’t have patellofemoral arthritis.
Also, if in fact it isn’t patellofemoral arthritis, don’t you think the loud mouth Rousenhaus would come out and tweet something about it when everyone else, besides Tom Rock, is saying that Phillips has patellofemoral arthritis?
Don’t you think he’d say, Kenny Phillips doesn’t have patellofemoral arthritis. He has so and so?
For example, if a player has a torn meniscus and everyone else is stating that he’s got a torn ACL, don’t you think he or his agent would say something?
Show me the link of that medical expert’s opinion.
FF55 et al.,
I will lovingly eat my words if Canty comes out this year and lights it up. If he does, he’ll be the unquestioned foundation of a dominant unit if Osi, Tuck and Kiwi come out angry (like I think they will). Add a rapidly-improving Cofield and a hopefully-healthy and Alford in with a rookie from the first and second round, maybe even sprinkle in some of what you all believe Bernard could be, and we could possibly have a pretty good defensive line. This potential would go a long way towards masking another weakness–our linebacking crew.
bpeters – Can you point me to when Mayock has said Mays might be a LB at the next level? I’ve never heard him say that or read any of his reports that suggest that. The only thing I’ve heard him say is that he doesn’t make enough plays, citing his low interception totals. Then again, Brian Dawkins averaged about 2 INTs a year and I was pretty happy when he finally left our division.
I guess with the signing of Rolle it doesn’t matter too much since it’s looking like we’ll be going a different direction in the draft.
bpeter, I can’t give you a link because that was a conversation between me and my orthopedist, not something that was posted anywhere. Steve has treated me and each of my three children (all of whom were athletes) and I’ve gotten to know him pretty well. So I trust what he says. His father was, I think, either the Giants’ or the Jets’ team doctor at some point because he has pictures with members of both teams all over his walls.
I cannot answer your questions except to say that this guy, who obviously has forgotten more about athletic knees than any of us (or any journalist) will ever know, says the odds are with Phillips based on what he was told by the surgeons who worked on Phillips’ knee. I cn only repeat what he told me: “Most of the people writing about this don’t know what they’re talking about. It was not patellofemoral arthritis except for a minor case precipitated by the actual condition, which is too complicated to explain to a layman but has to do with blood flow to the area and molecular changes that tend not be be reversible but can be moderated by a number of means”. That’s not an exact quote, but it’s close.
Look, this isn’t worth arguing about because he says that no one, including him, will know about Phillips until around June. What the heck difference does it make what the damned condition is? Either he can play at a high level or he cannot. But let’s remember he was 100% when the Giants shut him down last season. He claimed he could keep playing but the doctors said that if he could be treated immediately they had a pretty good chance of preventing a problem that won’t go away from shortening his career too much.
In any case, I’m taking my guy’s opinion over any other. He’s one of the greatest experts in the world. I couldn’t care less what someone else has to say. It isn’t a vote. If professional journalists have twenty saying it’s patellofemoral arthritis and three saying it’s something else, why should anyone care what any of them have to say versus a bloody world expert on athletic injuries who has seen hundreds, probably thousands, of damaged knees? I couldn’t care less what the other guys say.
But it doesn’t matter, and that’s why I’m done responding to a tempest in a teapot. Either Phillips will be able to play or he won’t. The proof will be in the pudding.
FF55yrs- I’ll believe you and your esteemed orthepedist anyday over these hack jounalists. You have proven to be right about this kind of stuff time and again over the last 3-4 years
Thanks demo. I guess long-term credibility doesn’t count for much in some situations. But I don’t care, and don’t take much offense. I didn’t mind being disagreed with…it was the implication that I was naive enough to take Tom Rock as an expert that bugged me.
Or maybe just the implication that I was naive at all. I refuse to accept such a hideous insult from anyone and challenge them to a duel. bpeter and I have already arranged to meet at dawn with single-shot pistols. My second is Jerry Reese. His is Ralph “Douchebag” Vacchiano. I plan to turn and aim for Ralph.
kujo, don’t count me among those saying Bernard is anything more than a #4 DT who should be knocked off the roster by a rookie in camp.
But yeah, I think Canty will have a big year.
Kujo- be ready to eat those words bro because Canty is the real deal..There were some others on here that were clueless enough to say he should be cut after the first bad season of his career, they too will be eating there words, only on a larger scale
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/07/sorgi-might-have-a-new-manning/
Hey, don’t forget to save me a place at the “buffet of verbiage” for my stubborn insistence that Reese was grossly overpaying for a safety who is only “slightly above average.”
My sincerest hope is that I will one day get to chow down on a heapin’ helpin of my own nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs – and that I won’t have to wait much beyond Week One to partake of that sumptious repast.
Someone mentioned Dan Williams above as an option for the giants. No way he gets past Miami now that Jason ferguson is suspended for 8 games.
I have wanted Sorgi for four years. Sign him.
Sorgi is so awesome at holding a clipboard that its mindblowing. Not many people notice, but Sorgi is by far the best clipboard holder in the NFL. Sign him.
That’s pretty much the entirety of the required skill set for backing up a Manning.
And I gotta say, I never really liked the way Carr held the clipboard. His grip on it always looked a bit weak and I often feared that one of those infamous Meadowlands gust would blow that sucker right out of his hand.
At least he didn’t wear “the glove” to hold the clipboard…
for 350k id hold a clip boar…but what if manning goes down?… i can hear TC sayin “Terrence…youre in!” id jus look and say….”umm, im just here to hold the clipboard”
FF55 – Maybe it’s just me, but does bpeter289’s writing style, method of disputation and endemic pessimism remind you of anyone?
Kierkegaard?
TRBM
ROFLMAO. That was an incredibly comical erudite non sequitur. I am still laughing.
The last comment was directed to Krow btw
im one who believes in canty and thinks he will prove to be a stud at the dt position for us…hes the reason i say we dont go DT in the 1st
HopLax, welcome back. Where have you been? Is the I-Banker schedule getting to you?
As to your query, no, there simply are not enough less-than-useful statistics incorporated in bpeter’s posts to be mistaken for your old friend. I believe bpeter is a genuine Giants fan, just one who adds an edge to his posts and sometimes gets wound up about things that hardly merit debate.
And I would hotly contest Krow’s analysis. The posts are far closer to Wittgenstein than the dismal Dane. The germanic influence is very clear upon any careful analysis of the texts.
I seem to have managed to refer to Horton Foote and Wittgenstein in the same day on Giants 101. Krow has added Kierkegaard. We have to be careful or someone might start posting Ph.D. dissertations or a review of the Armory Show here as the free agency period hits its lull.
I wonder how many of you have significant others who are now doing exactly what my wife is doing? It has become clear to me that the Academy awards (including all red carpet walks and interviews) is to women what the Super Bowl is to men. She, a highly sophisticated woman who produced The Today Show and then has practically run our town, sits transfixed in front of the TV fascinated by every nuance. her friends, and my one daughter who is currently in the United States, are calling each other about every dress and every speech. If they had video replay they’d want it. She will spend much of tomorrow watching shows that deconstruct the Oscars ceremonies and clothes. I have to feign a certain degree of interest thanks to her passions and the fact that my son is in the movie business (his company is the one behind Precious, which happens to be a terrific movie).
So, Carr is gone to San Fran… Whos next? Sorgi? DelHomme?
49ers | Carr agrees to terms
Sun, 07 Mar 2010 17:21:57 -0800
Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.com, reports the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms on a contract with free-agent QB David Carr (Giants). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Giants will host free agent K Rhys Lloyd on Monday.
The Vikings are also interested. Purely a kickoff specialist — and a very good one — Lloyd would fall in line behind Lawrence Tynes in New York.
Source: New York Daily News
I’d rather not “waste” a roster spot on a 2nd kicker, especially if they are active on game days, but if the team insists on keeping Tynes then we need to sign this guy! I’m sick of our lack of touchbacks…on that thought Tynes must go regardless
Really sorry to see Carr go. I think he will push Alex Smith hard and may well become the 49ers’ starting quarterback. I wish him good luck. He got a bum deal starting out on what was an awful team.
Reese should sign Sorgi ASAP.
Glad to see the powers-that-be have finally awakened to the fact that they need a kickoff specialist. It would have been nice to have one for the past two years. It might have made an enormous difference in 2008, and perhaps even in 2009. The absence of same was a major organizational failure.
What about Delholme?
seriously, whats so great bout sorgi
NY Giants waive safety Aaron Rouse…WTF???
I think the team plans to sign another veteran safety who’s better, and probably also a rookie somewhere in rounds 2-4. There’s only likely to be one, maybe 2 roster spots for the safeties from last year (including KP).
Why cut Rouse, and not CC? I have no clue….sounds like a coin flip.. we do need a safety who can cover in the box. i would have gone with rouse but special teams is the difference.
So this film, “The Hurt Locker” wins Best Picture and I come to learn it’s about some soldiers in Iraq.
And all this time I had assumed that it was a documentary about the Giants injury-riddled ‘09 season.
that movie sucked!
So.. Rolle ehh… Not sure how I feel about this
sam, welcome back. i like the move….ONLY IF WE GO MLB IN THE 1ST
Yeah we’ll see.. At least he has some swagger to him. If I hvae to watch a bunch of droppy looking putzes get burned deep another year Id might snap..
question, can i pick up the dvd set new york giants 10 greatest games at a best buy?
Giants considering Jeff Garcia for backup spot
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 7, 2010 10:56 PM ET
The Giants will consider a pair of 40-year-old quarterbacks to replace David Carr.
The team is expected to look into Jeff Garcia and Mark Brunell, according to the New York Daily News.
Garcia spent last season out of the league, but he would like to get back in. His agent says Garcia doesn’t have a visit planned “yet” but he is “waiting to hear” from New York.
Brunell was Drew Brees’ backup in New Orleans last season, but it’s unclear if they want him back.
The Giants will start their backup search by meeting with Manning caddy Jim Sorgi Monday.
