Report: Rolle to Giants 95% Done

March 5th, 2010 at 12:57 PM
By Dan Benton

According to NFL Network, a deal between the New York Giants and free agent safety Antrel Rolle is “95% done. However, that report could just be a smokescreen sent out by his agent fishing for better offers, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

According to Pro Football Talk, two other teams – the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals – remain in the hunt for his services.

Considering how cheap the Bidwell’s typically are, you can all but cross Arizona off the list. And if you factor in that Rolle already turned down a $6 million annual contract with them, I’d say it’s safe to assume this is a two team race.

3:20 PM UPDATE – Ralph Vacchiano reports that Rolle is taking a physical for the Giants, but if the Dolphins up their offer in the final moments, the tides could shift dramatically.

5:05 UPDATE – Mike Garafolo reports that in addition to Antoine Bethea and Oshiomogho Atogwe, the Giants are also talking to Darren Sharper as possible backups, should the Antrel Rolle deal not get finalized.

5:30 UPDATEThe South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the Giants and Rolle are “finalizing a deal.”

7:04 UPDATE – Mike Garafolo tweets that Rolle will give Arizona a chance to match the offer Big Blue gives him…however, it remains unlikely that the Cardinals will be able to do so.

Other Notes:

- NFL sources say David Carr to the 49ers is very likely; “it’s the 49ers to lose.”

- Pat Traina hints that the Giants may reach out to Mark Brunell should they lose David Carr.

- Cornerback Aaron Ross and long-time girlfriend Sanya Richards were married on Feb. 26th.

- PFT says free agent linebacker/defensive end Aaron Kampmann will visit the Eagles first. However, Jay Glazer says that information is inaccurate and that Kampmann is taking the weekend to decide his next step.

- Mike Garafolo also reports that the Giants have contacted OJ Atogwe’s agent.

Stay tuned to Giants 101 as we update this situation throughout the day.

I know this will get mixed reviews but i am happy about this and anxious to see what the deal is… The bright side is tht we now have a safety to pair with phillips.. he is an above average safety in the league and i am happy about this

I wonder if Carr could actually win the starting job in SF….

I think JR gets this done for either a backloaded 5 yr $35-$40 or 6 yr $42-$48 million back loaded deal

    • norm norm says:

That would be more palatable. But Rolle’s agent is Rosenscum; I can’t see him biting on a backloaded deal.

Hope I’m wrong and you’re right.

  6. ri giantsfan ri giantsfan says:

Id be fine with either deal

  7. Kyle Langan Kyle Langan says:

As ff55 said, this simply isn’t the “cry for desperation” that you make it seem. Its a way to get a veteran to fill ARGUABLY the teams biggest need knowing that TC probably wont play a rookie at this spot and he likely wouldn’t do much anyway.

getting back to the point, if you sign a veteran, you can then go into the #15 pick in the draft knowing that you can get whomever you please regardless of position.

That has more to do with it than anything.

And norm… Don’t bring up Jerry Jones and the 2009 offseason when citing GOOD moves. They traded away 3 of their first 5 picks for Roy Williams… so they HAD to sign free agents. Not just 1… Several.

Most of whom sucked. The only reason Dallas improved this past season was Miles Austin. They would have been 7-9 or worse without him.

Also… If Rolle isn’t the only option then what are the other options? (besides ff55 and my idea on Wilson which won’t happen or the draft which won’t yield much bcause of TC)

    • ri giantsfan ri giantsfan says:

      Well Said Kyle

I think most agree here, overpaying a little will be fine since it fills a huge needs with a PLAYMAKER! something we need desperately – Well said sir

    • norm norm says:

      Sorry, Kyle.

The Roy Williams deal took place at the ‘08 trade deadline – and it was an Epic Fail.

But as for the offseason, Jerruh had a better one than did Reese. At least insofar as getting the most production in ‘09 for free agent $$ spent goes. While none of them are superstars, it’s inarguable that Olshansky, Brookings and Sensabaugh all played key roles on a resurgent Dallas D.

Hey, I despise the Cowboys and hate to write that. But dem’s da facts, Jack.

    • Rob Domaine Rob Domaine says:

Safety is absolutely the biggest need and getting a reliable veteran in Rolle is a smart move. They will address the safety position again during the draft without a doubt. I’m still liking the value of Chad Jones in round two if he is available. TC will not start a rookie, we all know that. This is a good move by Jerry Reese and I doubt he will stop at just one signing. Could DT be next?

      • ROC ROC says:

Getting Rolle is the smart move and fills the biggest question mark on the roster.

Rolle will start with Phillips, and Michael Johnson is the third safety, whch is not bad at all.

If Phillips’ knee acts up you have Michael Johnson and Rolle instead of Johnson and C.C. Brown.

        HUGE UPGRADE.

Now the Giants can draft the BPA at #15 overall. Maybe McClain or Haden falls. Maybe they solidify the O-Line of the future with Ituapi, Bulaga or Anthony Davis…or Trent Williams. Maybe another pass rusher like Griffin, Dunlap, JPP or Morgan.

Solves a major need and allows the GMen to draft the top player on their board at #15. Great signing.

  11. Rob Domaine Rob Domaine says:

Getting Rolle will be a welcomed upgrade but I hope we don’t lose David Carr as Eli’s backup QB.

  12. 12dan.S. 12dan.S. says:

Dear everyone who’s using the “Rolle is a playmaker” line… He had 4 picks last year and 5 another year.. Besides that he’s had 3 in 4 years I believe. Not exactly a beastly playmaker. I would love to get him because he’s an upgrade over what we have but it’s not worth it if we have to pay him more than any other safety in the NFL. If you compare Michael Johnson’s 08 stats with Rolle’s, they are pretty similar.. Except Johnson isn’t making anything close to 8 mil…

  13. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

Okay, I’m repeating myself, but I’m okay with making the Rolle deal as long as Reese/Ross get a potentially great player with that #46 pick. I have confidence that they will, and so must they, because I still think the play for George Wilson (Kyle had him on his radar long before the rest of us, but I’m just as enamored of him, and I think Fewell is too, as was Kyle…and I still think he can be had) would be a good one.

But “pace norm”, think about how we’ll all feel if we go into the draft with the safety position essentially taken care of, and thinking “Hey, if Kenny Phillips is actually as well-off as he and the doctors claim, then we’re looking at a potentially GREAT secondary in 2010 with he and Rolle playing behind Webster, Ross and Thomas”. Think about the options with the draft? April couldn’t come soon enough.

  14. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

kujo, LOL!!! Republicans for fiscal responsibility, Democrats for fun. I think you got it about right.

  15. Rolle is a bad move at that price. He’s not worth the money. I hope I eat my words. The only benefit is that it means we don’t have to spend a high draft pick on safety, it can wait until round 4 or later. The downside, does that make this guy the highest paid on our defense? Is he really worth being the highest paid on our D? From a cost-to-production stand point this deal is ugly, we should get an All Pro at that price or someone on the threshold of being an all-pro!

    • Rob Domaine Rob Domaine says:

I agree that the price is wrong but we need to make some moves. With Fewell at the helm, perhaps Rolle will be an even better player. He is a young player with a lot of potential. They have to pull the trigger on this one.

    • jfunk jfunk says:

again with the “what we should get for that money” argument.

      Name somebody.

If there are no players AVAILABLE who you can have for the same money, than any argument about who you would rather have for that money isn’t relevant.

    • Grateful Giants Grateful Giants says:

I think fewell can make our entire secondary all pro with one more decent saftey (rolle would fill that roll)

  16. 12dan.S. 12dan.S. says:

And did you guys watch Arizona’s defense in the playoffs? Their LBs are better than ours, and yet their D got lit up for 80+ points in 2 games… They have DRC and Adrian Wilson back there who are both very good, so who is to blame for all those points? If you put Johnson or Brown in there instead of Rolle, it probably would have been the same outcome, no better-no worse. So while Rolle will be an upgrade, don’t start talking superbowl defense just because we added him to our secondary. He isn’t going to have that type of impact. However, if our pass rush can get back to what it used to be, then Rolle and KP will be a dangerous combo at safety. That’s all, thanks for listening.

  17. Kyle Langan Kyle Langan says:

norm- Im aware of when The Roy Williams trade took place… and thats why they had no draft picks last year…

    Just layin out the facts…

  18. jfunk jfunk says:

With 2010 being uncapped, couldn’t teams avoid the “having to cut the fat next year” problem and overpay simply by making the 2010 base salary for new guys huge and guaranteed while making the signing bonus relatively normal.

That way, you won’t have to worry about a potential future cap hit…you keep all the big numbers stuck squarely in 2010 by making it all base salary.

  19. Los Los says:

has anyone wondered if our CBs will fit this new defensive scheme? Will Webster revert back to his old habits? I remember the days where Webster did not fit Tim Lewis’ scheme, but then again Lewis was a bad DC.

  20. norm norm says:

Much as I’d love to stay and complete my assimilation into the G101 hivemind (”We are the Borg; resistance is futile.”) I really need to step away for awhile and tend to the work duties I’ve been neglecting for the past couple of hours.

I’ll return later to learn how and where to score the best ducats to see a resurgent, Rolle-led defense dominate the AFC representative in the Super Bowl.

  21. Kevros Kevros says:

There could also be a lot of fat trimming towards the end of or after this season. As long as a player is cut before the starting date of the new CBA, the cap implications will be the same as if they were cut today. So why not let the talent play and then cut them later on before they negatively impact the cap…

  22. 12dan.S. 12dan.S. says:

The best part of this deal to me is that Fewell seems to care about turnovers and interceptions. He tries to make all his players into ball hawks and Rolle’s best attribute is that he is a converted CB so his ball skills are very good for a safety and if he is the guy that Fewell wants then he should be able to make him and a healthy KP into a dangerous combo downfield like Byrd and Wilson were for the Bills last season (13 interceptions combined).

    • Kyle Langan Kyle Langan says:

9 by Bryd alone. I agree with you and thats what i have been saying about getting this guy. Its important that we get Fewell tools and allow Reese to do his thing in the draft

      • jfunk jfunk says:

Agreed. I do want us to sign Rolle, but I’m not gonna sit here and act like it’s a silver bullet that makes our secondary no longer a concern.

The way I see it, especially with Kenny up in the air a bit, we need TWO new potential starters, so signing Rolle will NOT mean we don’t need to draft one, but it will give us a little more leeway to wait an extra round or two.

And if the deal is made well, we could possibly even cut him in a year without TOO bad of a hit (if there is even a cap) in the event that our X round safety looks good and we want him to start in 2011.

  23. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

Sorry giantgiantfan and 12dan, but I assume you don’t contend that Rolle isn’t a big upgrade over any of the current Giants’ safeties besides Phillips, do you? Comparing Johnson’s stats with Rolle’s is just not sensible. Individual stats in football are simply not that indicative of talent, especially because in the case of a safety you just don’t know what kinds of defenses were called and who had what responsibility.

So you have three choices: go into 2010 with no upgrade prior to the draft; “buy” Rolle even if you don’t like the price; or come up with another solution that I’m not hearing from either of you.

Just as it makes no sense to “play Madden” with real teams, it also makes no sense to stick your head in the sand and yell “That makes no sense” when you don’t have a better idea. Jerry Reese has to run a football team that intends to compete for the Lombardi Trophy every year that Eli is behind center for the rest of his career. You’re talking about ideal world’s where no one is overpaid and everyone recognizes his true value. General managers in the NFL< or in any other endeavor, do not have the luxury of thinking that way when they have a critical need that must be filled.

And by the way, a healthy Phillips, Rolle (and Johnson and Rashad or a draft pick as depth), Webster, Thomas and Ross is ABSOLUTELY one of the best secondaries in the NFL. Perhaps Rolle would be the weakest member of that fivesome, but if he's your worst then you have a great backfield.

  24. Therealdeal Therealdeal says:

Im very excited about this i think this is a good move.. it gives us an above average safety and pairs him next to a young safety who is full of potential.. we now have two young ballhawk safeties.. Our turnover numbers should increase and in addition to that it lets us focus on our need at linebacker for the draft.. i really hope mcclain is our guy

  25. Dan Benton Dan Benton says:

Giants may call Mark Brunell should they lose David Carr.

  26. Kyle Langan Kyle Langan says:

Just so you realize, If Rolle were signing with Philadelphia the only talk here would be about how we are royally screwed… Not salary

I thought 10 mil a year was excessive for Samuel (and I still do) but yet he somehow manages to pick of Manning just about EVERY time we face Philly (at which point in time I do a massive face-palm).

If a player performs then hes not overpaid its simple. If Fewell feels like he needs some tools in the secondary, then I trust him. EVery secondary hes worked with has been good

  27. arigsbee arigsbee says:

I won’t be pissed if we get Rolle, because as I and others have stated…it fills a need with an above-average playmaker, who will come in and contribute immediately. Having said that, I will be a little bummed on the fact that us signing Rolle takes us out of the running for Taylor Mays, who despite what many are claiming as the second coming of Roy Williams…I think will be a stud, and paired with KP could be one of the best safety tandems in Giants history. I just have this gut feeling that we won’t take him…Philly will…and our receivers going over the middle will pay for it for the next decade.

  28. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

And before everyone starts in again on the “Rolle’s cost will make the rest of the defense angry” let me say that I generally hate bringing in anyone who damages the salary structure of the team, especially one as young and talented as the Giants, BUT, you have to remember that sometimes bringing in someone can help everyone make more money down the road.

You think a secondary of Webster, Ross, Thomas, Rolle and Phillips in passing situations (even if Rolle turns out to be the worst of the five) wouldn’t force QBs to hold the ball that fraction of a second during which Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Canty, Sintim, etc. would increase their sack and hit totals? You think having those guys out on the field wouldn’t help Boley, Goff and Kehl look better in coverage because they know they have excellent help deep? You think players reaching free agency who have multiple rings don’t get paid better than those who haven’t won a championship?

So while I’m not shouting from the rooftops about getting Rolle, keep in mind that he could have a multiplier effect on the team, he fits fewell’s philosophy of turnover-oriented defense because he’s a converted cornerback, he could help his teammates get paid, and that in any case he would represent both an insurance policy for the team if Phillips can’t get back quickly and freedom for Reese/Ross to do their thing at the draft.

The Giants have to make a serious run at him.

  29. dreadgiantNC dreadgiantNC says:

also, it should be noted that the market dictates these players prices, not the players themselves…they are just aware of what they are worth to their potential employers.

every year it will be like “oh man i cant believe so and so is get X number of dollars!” because the contracts are only going one way so we may as well recognize it. canty became our highest paid defender as soon as he signed and the locker didnt explode even though he hardly played at all last season

  30. 12dan.S. 12dan.S. says:

FF55- You didn’t read my last comment, did you? I think bringing in Rolle is great because his tools seem to make him the protypical safety for a Perry Fewell defense. However, making him the highest paid safety in the league is a little too much IMO. He’s not as great as many here are making him out to be and that’s all I’m trying to tell everyone. Somebody’s got to even the field here so that’s what I’m trying to do. The stat argument wasn’t to show MJ is on Rolle’s level, I was just trying to show some of the uneducated (not you) that Rolle hasn’t had a pro bowl career and won’t completely change the face of our defense all alone.

  31. 12dan.S. 12dan.S. says:

Either way, our back LBs and safeties last season were really Johnson, CC, Clark, Pierce, and whoever played when Boley was injured. I’ll take KP, Rolle, Sintim, Weatherspoon, Boley over those guys any day of the week. Hopefully that is our LB/S core next season (:

  32. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

Kyle, good post. And you’re right. If Rolle was going to the Eagles there would be absolute panic around here.

My last point. If you don’t think Rolle can be a playmaker and a guy who creates turnovers, go back and look at his late interception that saved the Cards in Giants Stadium this season. It is rare that a safety beats Steve Smith to a spot. It is very rare that Smith doesn’t come up with a contested ball. People screamed at Eli about that interception but in fact he made a pretty good pass and probably assumed Rolle would be in inside coverage. Rolle anticipated that pass extremely well, made a great break on the route, and then physically beat Smith on a game-winning play. I’ll bet Perry Fewell has watched that tape a number of times while deciding if he wanted Rolle, and he probably liked what he saw.

  33. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

Okay, so is the consensus that it pisses us off that Rolle could get paid so much, but we have to have a veteran safety so Reese should hold his breathe and get the guy even if none of us think he has Pro Bowl written all over him?

Remember, except through the draft, and even then sometimes, the deals you make are rarely made without some pain and indecision. If it were easy we could all be GMs (off course we all think we should be, but reality bites).

      I disagree

awful coaching trickles down to a host of other bad decisions

we have to win this year or never?

  34. jimdhigginss jimdhigginss says:

Rolle is a bad move. Yeah he is an upgrade, a big upgrade, over what we have, but only because what we have (other than KP) is real garbage. Rolle is an average player made to look good (most of the time unless you count the playoffs) because he is paired with Adrian Wilson.
Signing Rolle is the poster child for everything wrong with free agency.
    The Giants need a safety.
The “best” one on the market is Rolle.
    But he’s only average.
But he’s represented by the best (worst) agent in the business.
So the Giants will overpay dramatically — the guy shouldn’t even make 4M?yr, let alone 8M
now the poison pill is swallowed for next year!!
Bad move; stupid move; Reese is regressing as a GM.

  41. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

Ha!!! Well, I’ve made it clear for a few years that I want Atogwe, and I’m glad his agent was contacted, but it would be wise of Reese to do so while negotiating with Rolle. They’re probably not at a true $8MM per annum so Rosenhaus has gone back to the Cards to see if they wanted to up their $6MM offer while the Giants want Rosenhaus to be aware that they think they have options.

Atogwe is a better player than Rolle, but prying him away from the Rams would not be simple unless they really don’t think they can keep Osi. Atogwe for Osi straight up is probably a deal that would happen. I’d rather pay up for Rolle and keep Osi unless he has really made it clear he will be impossible to work with, which I tend to doubt.

  42. arigsbee arigsbee says:

Agree with FF55. Atogwe is a better solution than Rolle…but to give up Osi for him, isn’t worth it to me…especially when we can get Rolle by ponying up cash, no picks, no nothing. I’d still rather have Mays, but Rolle IS a playmaker.

I’m WAY more on Jim’s side when it comes to Coughlin. I think he is a good coach, but nothing special, and the team has had many opportunities to get someone special.

There are many coaches in the NFL who would love to have Coughlin’s record and results, but I think it’s impossible to deny that he has never really found a way to get the most out of the talent on this team. He is weak at hiring coordinators and position coaches (loyalty over competence), he doesn’t properly prepare his non-starters for later duty as injuries inevitably pile up, he makes some very strange personnel decisions and he is neither a great game-planner nor one who seems capable of in-game adjustments. He has done a great job of keeping the team together through thick and thin, and staying focused on the all-for-one-one-for-all approach that is necessary to winning in the NFL, but he may be close to reaching the point at which the players top listening.

He needs a great season in 2010 or his schtick will get very old. I’d like to see him gone, but I’d rather they win another ring and we’re stuck with the guy for a few more years.

On to who’s going to be our back up QB. FF55 has been saying it the past couple of years – Carr could start elsewhere. San Fran might actually be a good fit for him. Who do we bring in? Kyle hit the nail on the head…if Carroll does pass on Mays I would be very concerned about taking him. In fact, I wouldn’t.

But I see no way Carroll doesn’t take him. He’s in a perfect position. He can pass on him with his first pick, making everyone worried that he knows something they don’t and thereby keeping them away from the guy, and then take him with the #14 pick. Seattle desperately needs help at safety so Carroll will wind up with Berry or Mays. It would be a bad bet to assume it isn’t Mays.

  62. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

wlubake, not at all a bad idea. But I suspect Hill would be in demand by a number of teams. Getting a good backup QB is one of those things that every good team must have but fans tend not to worry about. They should.

Reese drafted Bomar with the expectation that he could be the backup in a few years, but he’s undoubtably not ready yet. This will be an important need for the Giants. We were very lucky to have Carr for two years. It would be a miracle if we get him back this time around.

    We’ll see.

  72. ROC ROC says:

Bad news for the GMen: The Seahawks are about to sign Brandon Marshall to an offer sheet. If this happens, Denver has 7 days to match. They won’t.

Seattle will then surrender their first rounder (#6) to Denver in exchange for Marshall.

That means the Broncos would have the Seahawks pick (#6) and Chicago’s (#11) and Seattle would still have Denver’s pick (#14)

Assume Denver will draft 3-4 defenders with at least one of those picks. Dan Williams and Rolando McClain would really solve a lot of their defensive holes. Dez Bryant is an option too.

It just makes the odds of Rolando McClain slipping to the GMen a little worse.

    • wlubake wlubake says:

      Smart comment.

    • demo3356 demo3356 says:

Not really…They would have to draft Bryant with one of those 2 picks to replace Marshall. The odds are that it would e the 13th pck and 6 is a little high for Mcclain. They would probably take a LT at 6 to replace Walter Jones

    • kujonicus kujonicus says:

Man, that’s a lot of frigin’ picks!

Gotta figure they take Dez Bryant at one of those picks. Can’t be throwning to Royal and Scheffler and Stokley forever. They’ll probably go after McClain (as originally expected) and a NT, though I still wouldn’t be surprised if they targeted a quarterback. Beardneck ain’t gonna get it done.

      • ROC ROC says:

Denver needs the picks to retool that terrible defense. Well it was terrible except for Thanksgiving when the Giants made them look like the ‘85 Bears or the ‘01 Ravens

  78. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

ROC, if they let Marshall go they’ll almost certainly want Bryant with one of those picks. And since they were picking ahead of us anyway, and we won’t be interested in Bryant, I don’t think the Denver side of the deal affects the Giants much at all.

Now, Seattle with only the #14 pick puts Mays back into play and complicates that situation.

But in the end, I don’t think this deal would have much relevance to the Giants.

    • ROC ROC says:

      I agree.

I mean McClain ditched the workouts at the combine. Once he runs, who knows if we will even want him on the Giants. A lot of scouts think he cannot play in space and is much better suited for the 3-4.

I think he would be GREAT though. It would be nice to have a 21 year old stud middle linebacker of the future on an organization who has based its identity around linebackers.

  79. kujonicus kujonicus says:

Thank Christ he’s not going to Philly.

Now we either gotta scoop up Kampman or hope he lands in NE or elsewhere.

  80. TroyThorne TroyThorne says:

Couple of thoughts after reading the comments:

    - Rolle is above average. Nothing less nothing more. I don’t think he’s worth the 8 mil he’s asking for but I guess the uncapped year makes it a bit easier to swallow. I think he’s a perfect fit for Fewell though so that provides some hope I guess.

    - Chester Taylor would be a better signing than Rolle? No. We have enough RBs and they can easily be had late in the draft (after we pick our usual 6th round QB of course).

    - Whoever keeps throwing around the “MJ and Rolle had similar stats in 08″ should stop. That was Rolle’s first year as a safety. I know everyone here believes taking a guy and moving him to a brand new position is a seamless transition but it’s actually quite difficult. He got better in 09 and the fact he had similar stats to MJ in his first year at safety says a lot about both of them.

Oh and as for the “Mays is a lock to Seattle” talk, that’s just not true. The Seahawks are a bad team with a lot of holes to fill including positions that may be deemed more important than safety (like OL for instance). Hell, they could take a QB if one of the “big two” fall. Actually, Bradford would be a pretty good fit for them now that I think about it. Not that I think he’ll fall that far, I’m just thinking out loud.

  85. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

Hey, on a completely different topic, let me be the first to suggest that Reese will draft or sign a fullback who can actually catch the ball out of the backfield, and let Hedgecock know that his job is far from secure. I like Hedgecock, and know that he was hurt all last year, which explains his lack of effectiveness (and a BIG part of why the run game was poor). I love his crazed attitude and his desire to hurt people. But he has to start catching the ball or he severely reduces what they can do with the playbook and how much they can spread the defense.

There needs to be serious competition for that job this year. No one seems to be paying attention to the need, but it’s there.

What about lining Jacobs up as a FB on some plays, and having him and AB/Draft pick split out? Teams wouldn’t know what to do.

Watch Rolle on his INT returns, he is very quick and does a great job of giving a lot of yards after the pick.

Travis Henry recently beat Kemp and had 11 kids with ten women scattered between Tennessee (college) Buffalo and Denver. (plus I’m sure Miami, LA and Vegas)

The Colts gave Bethea a first-round tender, making the cost prohibitive for Washington in particular if it planned to sign him to an offer sheet. He should be a much more affordable option than Antrel Rolle, and is a far superior tackler. Clark also drawn interest from the Bears and his “old” team, the Steelers. The Redskins and Giants have been rumored as suitors.

    Per The Miami Herald

  107. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

I think it’s safe to say that journalists will hear the Giants are interested in every safety in the league until they have Rolle’s signature on a contract. Even if he and Rosenhaus think Reese is bluffing, they probably can’t afford to call the bluff.

Yeah, I figured as much. Just thought I’d throw it out there.

    • kujonicus kujonicus says:

Makes you wonder: would bringing in more than one veteran safety be a bad idea? It would spell the end of the CC Brown era and, if it preceded a fairly decent draft pick at the same position, could push out Johnson, Rouse or Rashad as well. Talk about the changing of the guard!

If we sign Rolle and Phillips is fully healthy, then that makes sense. But Phillips isn’t a sure thing yet and getting a guy like Chad Jones in the 2nd round is a value/need pick IMO and makes us even deadlier at the safety position.

          • ROC ROC says:

The starting safeties will be Rolle and Phillips.

Michael Johnson is the third. He is a good player and an excellent third safety.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel confirms that free agent FS Antrel Rolle is “in the process of finalizing a deal with the Giants.”
The Giants look to be in the process of making Rolle one of the NFL’s top paid safeties with a contract that may approach $8 million a year over five to six seasons. The Dolphins apparently never got serious about signing him.

This is one of the reasons I was trying to calm norm down about this whole process. What Jerry Reese heard that Rolle wants 8 per year and he just says yeah sure, hell we can do at least 8.

    No.

Hes gonna be shrewed with this. This deal will be laden with performance escalators to make sure Rolle knows what must be done and that the team will understand that The Giants just don’t dole out cash. If you play well… for the new york giants… You will get paid by The New York Giants.

Thats how he does business. And Im willing to be patient with this knowing that Reese likes to be thorough in this process

  145. Simon Garron-Caine SimonGC says:

Interesting that Miami and NYG were both rumored destinations for both Rolle and Dansby. Perhaps the Giants leaked interest in Dansby to disguise interest in Rolle and coerce Miami into prioritizing Dansby over Rolle…

Nosh– He’s good. Solidly above average, but not at all elite. At the age of 28, he’s still in prime physical condition (no signs of losing a step) and has been around long enough to prove that however good he is, he actually is that good. Pat Willis is a great linebacker. But he isn’t much in regard to evaluating quarterbacks. If he thinks they have three better than Carr he’s dreaming. He ought to stick to defense.

Vacchiano is a first-class douche. Can’t stand the guy and think his journalism leaves plenty to be desired. I will always remember his baiting Osi last year about his unhappiness with being in a deep rotation. Osi was being politically correct and saying all the right things but Ralph kept at him until Osi finally walked away.

Dan, sorry, cannot be me. I am going to the Horton Foote production of Orphans’ Home Cycle and am at the theater from 10AM through 11PM (with a few breaks but I won’t be on the web) seeing three shows. A real marathon. No Giants for me tomorrow.

ff55– Beat me to it on Willis. Great linebacker, piss poor QB evaluator. Regardless that it’s not even his place to open his mouth…if you’d rather have Alex smith than David Carr you’re an idiot.

Agreed that Vacchiano’s various agendas often stand between honest reporting and his readers. However, while his journalism may leave something to be desired by fans, I think his editors/bosses should LOVE his work, for a variety of reasons.

Yeah we got that one, but as I said before, that’s nothing we haven’t known around here since 3 oclock. The Sun-Sentinel is simply rewording reports from Vacchiano. The next development is one of three things: deal is done, deal hit a particular snag, deal fell apart.
      Until then….

I just don’t understand the Eagles and their quarterback situation. I hate them. I cannot stand McNabb (as a player…he’s a pretty good guy in the rest of his life), but what the heck is management doing trying to get rid of him? I understand he has never proven he can win a big game when the burden falls on him, but neither has Kolb.

Frankly, I’d love it if they go into 2010 with Kolb under center. I think things would be easier for us. We can say all we want about being outcoached by them (certainly true over the past two seasons) but we also need to admit that McNabb has had some great games against us too. I thought Eli’s game last season in the Meadowlands against the Eagles was close to perfect (absent the fumble), but in the end McNabb made the throws he had to make to beat us. I’d love to see him in another uniform.

And no, the Giants aren’t going to look at Vick. Anyone who does for a second round pick is an idiot.

The Colts have just cut Jim Sorgi. I’d take a look at him as backup QB is Carr leaves. I know he had a shoulder last year, but if he’s healthy he’s certainly a better option than freaking Mark Brunell….

  163. jfunk jfunk says:

I bet there are a few Ravens QBs from the past 10 years that wish they’d have brought them a receiver or two like this. Getting Mason for McNair doesn’t quite cut it.

Cards could have gotten more for Bolden last year. I guess that’s a moot point since they made another run at the SB though…now it’s easier to let him go since they probably are thinking they need another couple years before they’re ready to make another run.

That being said, I think the Cardinals are still the same old Cardinals. I will admit they’ve had a couple impressive playoff games the past two seasons, but the reality is that if they were still in the NFC East (or most other divisions for that matter) they wouldn’t even have been .500 either of those years. No consistency. As soon as somebody in that division climbs back into the ranks of normalcy, the Cards will be perennial bottom feeders again.

Dare I say Rolle has signed? I guess it could be whispers in the wind.

  165. JP JP says:

If the Rolle deal is finalized I believe the Giants should sign Morrison from the Raiders. Then resign Barry Cofield. When the draft rolls around you can draft the best available linebacker and or defensive tackle in the first two rounds without feeling like they have to be a savior. I would be very happy with a Giants defense:

    DE: Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Tollefson
DT: Cofield, Canty, Alford, Rookie (maybe Price)
OLB: Boley, Sintim, Keul, Wilkinson, Rookie
    MLB: Morrison, Goff, Blackburn, Rookie
CB: Webster, Thomas, Ross, Johnson, Anyone besides Dockery
    S: Phillips, Rolle, Johnson, Rouse

  173. norm norm says:

OK; now that I’ve dealt with the pesky business of earning a living I can fully turn my attention back to this sideshow.

Having just scanned through the comments made in my absence, a few thoughts:

    1) Thanks to Jim Stoll for continuing to fight the good fight while I was away. Although Jim’s assessment of Rolle as an “average” safety is much harsher than my own of “above average, nothing great,” our underlying premise is the same. This is not a guy who deserves to be the highest paid safety in the NFL – or anywhere within sniffing distance thereof. Overpaying for him DOES smell like desperation on the part of the Giant front office.

    2) Have people really been writing that Rolle “is just the kind of safety that Fewell needs”? Well, I’m confused. Haven’t I been hearing over the past couple of months about what an alchemist Fewell is when it comes to coaching up secondaries? Sounds to me like a guy who should be able to make gold out of KP at 75%; a draft pick; and the rest of the base matter we have at the position. Particularly if we shore up out pass rush and linebacking play. Sure doesn’t sound like a coach whose success would be dependent on the FO going out of its way to give elite money to a decidedly non-elite talent at safety.

    3) Finally, Kyle seems to have taken great exception to the idea that Jerruh had a better offseason than Reese in ‘09. So I’ll keep this real simple: The Giants went out and spent $83 MM on free agents, brought in a boatload of draft picks and watched their record fall from 12-4 to 8-8. The Cowboys brought in bargain free agents and basically sat out the draft and somehow improved their record from 9-7 to 11-5. Yeah, yeah – we had injuries, lousy coaching, whatever. But to paraphrase Parcells, it was what your record says it was. And the record says that Jerruh had a better offseason because, well, he conducted business the way Reese used to while Reese was busy taking a page out of the old Jerruh/Snyder playbook. Res ipsa loquitor, dude.

Just to set the record straight – I don’t hate Rolle, the player. I just hate him at the price. Yes, he’s an upgrade but the idea that he’s going to come in and be a difference maker (which is what his salary demands suggest he will be) is laughable. Someone made the excellent point that his mates in the secondary and at linebacker were far superior in Arizona to what the Giants had last year. And yet, that defense still managed to get torched by Green Bay and New Orleans in the playoffs. A real difference maker, indeed.

Oh well, I realize I’m just blowing off steam about what now sadly looks to be a fait accompli. But the good news is that I ain’t going anywhere (unless the Giants cut my new BFF, Herb, in which case another exile may well be forthcoming) Meaning I’ll be around for you all to make great sport at my expense when Rolle goes on to have the Pro Bowl season that is apparently inevitable. But if he turns out to be little more than another grossly overpaid mediocrity, just remember – you heard it here first.

  182. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

If the Giants sign Rolle it opens up the possibility that they go for a DE with their first couple of picks. There are some great athletes at that spot and a rookie could push Tollefson off the roster and be ready to move up if Kiwi or Osi leaves.

Of course Canty can play some at DE, but we should try to have a great 4-deep depth chart and Tollefson just isn’t that good. Great Special teams guy, but not much in the base defense. Sintim might be moved eventually, but I suspect he’ll prove pretty good at SAM and tie that position down for a long time.

To be clear, I am NOT suggesting they draft a DE early, just saying the possibility is there and it could make sense. Actually, with a signing of Rolle the draft opens up in a big way. They could go O-line, running back, DE, DT, linebacker, CB, S…almost anything based on who is on the board.

As to Morrison, has anyone actually seen a lot of this guy? I’ve never seen him play (except one raiders’ game during which I wasn’t paying attention to him). Is he really a good option for Reese or just a name de jour? I’d like reactions from people who have seen him, not those of us working from websites and third-hand opinions.

FF55 – you’re right about the possibility of grabbing a DE. However, as far as I’m concerned, I’d rather seem them build the OL trenches. At 15, there’s going to be some GOOD guys available on OL, be it a LT/RT or a OG. Wouldn’t be opposed to a 2nd-mid round DE though; Tollefson sucks ass!

  186. fanfor55years fanfor55years says:

norm, I just don’t understand you and Jim. You’re more concerned about the Mara and Tisch money than they are. The ONLY money concern should be whether a too-high salary will screw up the Giants’ salary structure and create problems with the team chemistry. Otherwise, the money issue should be irrelevant.

Rolle is an upgrade, a big one. He wouldn’t have to become a Pro Bowler to be that. Arguing otherwise is just arguing for argument’s sake.

So will a $7MM plus (with some incentives and probably about $20MM guaranteed) annual paycheck disrupt team chemistry? That is the ONLY legitimate issue here. Stop mixing it with irrelevant arguments. And if it will disrupt team chemistry, with whom exactly? Osi? He’s already pissed off about money and will have to be dealt with regardless of what Rolle makes. Webster? He didn’t have a good enough 2009 to make a stink. Ross? Hah. Phillips? he’s on his rookie contract and knows that he will get his money when the time comes. Thomas? Same thing. Tuck? Already has a very good contract and didn’t produce in 2009. Any linebacker? What a laugh. Offensive linemen? They all know that what any defender makes is irrelevant to them. Wide receivers? Steve Smith is the only issue and he’s probably going to want big bucks anyway if he has another season like he just did. The others are too young to care now. Eli? Obviously not. Running backs? Jacobs was taken care of and Bradshaw is on his rookie deal. The others will just be happy to make the team. Boss? Kid is happy to be in the NFL and thriving.

So where is the big problem? There isn’t one. YOU, and Jim, are the only people who have a problem with the salary. Of course Rolle isn’t worth anything close to $8MM per annum. I don’t think he’s worth the $6MM the Cards offered. But it isn’t my money (well, at what I’m paying for tickets maybe it is my money, but I’m paying it whether we have a safety or not and all things being equal I DEMAND a safety), nor yours. You’re getting exercised over a phantom problem. You ought to relax a bit and enjoy the ride. The team is better with Rolle than without him. That’s all that really matters.

This site has too many smart people posting on it for such an irrelevant and completely pointless argument to keep popping up. It’s not like Rolle was getting burned for every TD. Nobody here even knows if he even was the cause of ONE TD.

Losing is a team effort. How many points did the 9ers drop on us in that dreaded playoff game? I guess that Strahan character wasn’t much of a playmaker. How many times did we give up 23+ points this year on D? Probably should just cut and trade Webster and Thomas. Obviously they’re not good players, I mean, they were on a team that gave up a lot of points!!! How good can they be, right!?!?!

You guys all need to remember that even if Rolle is given a contract of $8 million annually, it does not MEAN he will be paid $8 million annually. We’ll have no way of knowing how much of that is guaranteed until the specific details are given.

Think of Eli’s contract. HUGE deal, but odds are he won’t earn all of that money. And if he does, it means he’s playing out of his mind and deserves every penny of it.

  201. jcrown92 jcrown92 says:

I don’t see why you guys care that we are giving Rolle $8 mil. It’s going to be uncapped next year. The owners are going to be making millions and millions off the PSLs I think it’s about time they invest it on the team. They last year they spent a bunch, but they left a huge void at S and it was the turning point of our season going sour. They have the money so spend it. I am sure that this deal with Rolle will probably incentive laden and front loaded this year in case next year there is a cap. Relax guys we needed to get this defense back to being dominant. Rolle and Phillips is the first step.

  202. jcrown92 jcrown92 says:

This Rolle signing allows us to focus on MLB, DT, OT, and RB in the early rounds. Two other things I hope Reese gets us are a kicker that can kickoff deep and a return specialist.

  203. norm norm says:

With all due respect, ff55, I wish the issue was as simple as you suggest.

From a team chemistry standpoint, I just don’t think you can look at Rolle’s salary on its face, do a quick run-through of the other players on the team, and blithely dismiss the possibility of it causing serous dissension down the road. By giving him such a salary, Reese is essentially betting that Rolle will come in and perform at a high level. Not necessarily an $8 MM a year level per se, but certainly at a level on a par with some of the better safeties in the league.

But what happens if Rolle comes in and stinks up the joint? Sure, that’s a possibility with any free agent but at least with other highly paid busts, you can usually point to a prior record of excellence which was the impetus for their high price in the first place. Not so with Rolle. Nothing he has done so far in his career suggests that he is an elite talent. But Reese is betting “on the come” that he is. As I said, if it works out, great. If not, you’re potentially looking have a whole locker room full of players who are saying “That bum’s getting $8 MM a year? Man, I can hardly wait for it’s time for me to negotiate my next deal; I’m worth at least TWICE that.” Yes, it’s a hypothetical but Reese has opened the door to that possibility.

Another point – which may or not be germane until we see the actual terms of the deal – is how this may hamstring the Giants if and when the cap is reinstated. If they manage to stuff most of the guaranteed money into the upcoming uncapped year, they may be able to sidestep any serious future cap issues. However if they’re on the hook for another $10-15 MM guaranteed over the next 2-3 years, that could have some negative ramifications. Again, this is pure speculation. The actual real world consequences are largely dependent on how the deal is structured and what the next CBA looks like.

Hey, like it or not (and I still don’t) I’m resigned to this happening. So I hope it works out as swimmingly as you and others on here suggest that it may. I’m a Giants fan, after all, and always hope for the best for my team. I suppose I’ll eventually come to “enjoy the ride,” as you say. But I gotta say, I miss the old patient, calculating Reese. I much prefer that erstwhile persona to that of his new one, “the freewheeling riverboat gambler.”

  205. jcrown92 jcrown92 says:

I’m starting to think Reese lucked into that Super Bowl offseason. I am thinking the only reason he didn’t spend any money that first year is he assumed it would allow the Giants to bow out early and he could get rid of Coughlin and bring in his guy for the job. But the Super Bowl win made him think Coughlin could be his man and decided to try and stock the pool for him. I could be way off, but I think it’s a good theory.
