It’s now safe to say that “find safety help” has been lowered on Jerry Reese’s to-do list, if not crossed off altogether.
After making New York the first stop on his “Pay Me My Money” free agent tour, former Arizona Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle didn’t leave town without signing a contract, as per NY Giants custom.
Mike Florio from PFT indicates that it is a 5 year-deal in the ballpark of $37 million. From PFT:
“Per a league source, it’s a five-year deal worth $37 million, an NFL record for a safety. Rolle gets $15 million guaranteed and $22.5 million over the first three years.”
Although Ralph Vacchiano’s early report that Rolle was taking a physical basically confirmed the existence of an agreement, the negotiations were amped up by last minute drama:
Vacchiano asserted that other teams could still be in play for Rolle, while Mike Garafolo reported that the Giants had already reached out to backup plans Darren Sharper, Antoine Bethea and Oshiomogho Atogwe. Big Blue fans waited nervously for hours after these reports, wondering if perhaps Arizona had tried to match the Giants offer.
(G101 Editorial Interpretation: If Rolle’s agent can use Vacchiano to squeeze out a few more bucks, the Giants can use Garafolo to call their bluff)
*THE CONRACT*
While earnable bonuses and escalators make these deals almost impossible to read from the outside, this big-money deal doesn’t quite reach the astronomical values that some had predicted.
It falls short of an $8MM yearly average, but pays Rolle more than $7MM per year, through the first three years. From where I stand, the Giants did a good job: they outbid the market without going overboard.
UPDATE: Florio came through again, late night, with a full breakdown of the numbers. Seems like they actually are pretty damn good…for Antrel Rolle. However, Rolle better be doing his best to make himself indispensable to the organization by the time those fourth and fifth years roll around. Back to PFT for the details:
“In year one…Rolle will get $10 million.
After two years…Rolle will have made a total of $15.5 million.
Through three years…Rolle will have $22.5 million.
After four…$29.75 million for Rolle.
After five…$37 million for Rolle.”
It may seem like a lot of money (and it is) for a player who isn’t quite considered “elite,” but fans/writers/commentators need not concern themselves with the Mara and Tisch family expenditures, so long as Rolle’s contract doesn’t prohibit the Giants in other ways as they move forward.
If, for instance, the Giants gave Rolle this contract and then can’t find the money for Barry Cofield, Steve Smith, and Mathias Kiwanuka when the time comes…then yeah, that’s a problem.
But this is not an Eric Mangini system they’re running here, folks.
The Giants have uncharacteristically given out big contracts in consecutive offseasons, but it would be rash to accuse the front office of being impulsive, desperate or acting without forethought.
The organization is not abandoning it’s core philosophy of developing and retaining it’s young players. Hopefully, that money is set aside already.
The danger is when the guys already in the locker room feel that Rolle’s money came from a pile that should have been waiting for them.
*WHAT’S IT MEAN?*
Although the Giants (and Miami Dolphins) had been rumored to covet both Rolle and Karlos Dansby, Rolle’s signing all but takes NY out of the running for Dansby (update: as does the fact that Dansby has agreed to terms with the Dolphins).
But now that the first domino has fallen, what have we learned about the Giants offseason plan to improve their roster?
This signing clearly indicates that the Giants saw their need for safety help as too immediate to relegate to draft day, where there’s no guarantee that your guy (if you’re lucky enough to get your guy) will be ready to contribute right away, the way Rolle will be expected to.
Did the Giants prioritize solidifying the safety position as opposed to the MLB position in free agency? Not necessarily.
All we know for sure is they preferred to spend their money on Antrel Rolle, who plays safety, rather than on Karlos Dansby, who plays middle linebacker.
Most likely, the Giants’ “reported interest” in Dansby was a smoke screen aimed at disguising real interest in Rolle, and perhaps coercing the competition (Miami) into prioritizing Dansby over Rolle.
*WHAT’S NEXT*
There’s not much left in unrestricted free agency, so it’d be hard for the Giants to make anything close to this kind of splash even if they wanted to. A few veteran deals perhaps, but those usually take place closer to or after the draft.
There’s hardly any way of knowing if the Giants will play the RFA market. They showed a willingness to engage it by reaching out to reps for O.J. Atogwe, Darren Sharper, and Antoine Bethea, although it’s unclear how much of that was posturing during the Rolle negotiations.
Perhaps the sexiest thing the Giants may get involved in would be trades, whether Reese was intent on picking up talent or draft picks. As I’ve said (to some support and some valid rebuke), I’d increase draft ammo by trying to trade a few players.
But by removing, or at the very least lowering, safety from the draft day shopping list, Jerry Reese can focus his higher draft picks on other perceived positions of need: DT, OL and perhaps MLB.
*MLB IMPLICATIONS?*
I couldn’t help but wonder if this signing indicated anything about how, or if, the Giants plan to upgrade the MLB position this offseason.
Before we start with the insinuations that this all means that Giants are targeting Alabama’s Rolando McClain in the draft (although, Miami’s acquisition of Dansby increases the likelihood that McClain slips to 15), let’s face facts: the Giants’ big bucks moves on the first day of free agency are not in any way influenced by the hope/possibility that a top-ten talent MLB slips to them in late April.
Although it could change if the Giants do aggressively pursue McClain or Oakland RFA Kirk Morrison, the decision not to seriously entertain Karlos Dansby implies that the Giants are either comfortable with, or willing to settle for, Jonathon Goff as the starting MLB next year.
Apparently, they were not so comfortable with the idea that their starting safeties would be Michael Johnson and the better of a C.C. Brown/Aaron Rouse competition.
*THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD*
Rolle’s addition immediately (and forcefully) bolsters a unit that fell apart last year when Kenny Phillips went on IR. Although Rolle’s presence becomes paramount if Phillips’ injury prevents him from returning to field or form, a healthy tandem of Kenny Phillips and Antrel Rolle gives the Giants the best starting safety duo in the NFC East.
With Rolle now in the fold and assuming Kenny Phillips returns (and according to Kenny, he’d be ready to play “tomorrow”), Aaron Ross will return to cornerback, and Michael Johnson will slide down the depth chart to become the 3rd safety.
Most Giants fans will expect C.C. Brown to get his walking papers as soon as the ink is dry on Rolle’s contract.
That would leave Aaron Rouse with a tenuous grip on the last spot on the depth chart, although he will have to hold off practice-squadders Vince Anderson and Shareff Rashad, not to mention fellow mid-season waiver claim D.J. Johnson, and any draft pick that falls into the Giants lap.

Worth it to get rid of cc brown. I would have paid $100 million if it had meant we would never have to see what we saw on defense last year ever again. Cc brown is the worst safety I have ever seen. He made Craig dahl and James butler look like probowlers.

David Carr-QB- Giants Mar. 5 – 10:03 pm et
Free agent David Carr is scheduled to take a physical at 49ers headquarters on Saturday.
“This could move quickly from there,” Niners beat writer Matt Maiocco says. Carr, 30, is expected to battle for backup Shaun Hill’s job if he signs on.
Source: Matt Maiocco on Twitter
Related: 49ers
Doubt Carr would make the lateral move as backup for the Giants to backup for the Niners unless…
(1) there was a significant pay raise involved; and/or
(2) there was the assurance that Alex Smith’s position on the depth chart was not cast in stone and that Carr would have every opportunity in camp to win the starting QB job.
Makes no sense otherwise. He had a pretty sweet deal here, paid $1 MM/yr to carry a clipboard behind one of the NFL’s more durable QBs after getting his brains bashed in playing behind the Houston & Carolina lines. Don;t think he’d give that up unless there was the possibility of something better.
I am happy with this signing. No way around it… we needed help desperately at the safety position. Sharper would have been a temp fix plus he is too old.
Now who made out better? Us with Rolle or the Jets with Cromartie?
Can’t help but be excited about the potential of two boys from the U patroling the secondary. Mixed with Webster, TT and Ross, and hopefully a coach that uses them to their strengths (any one with a brain could figure out how), this has the makings to be a fun season.
Guys, please refresh your stuff at least once, there were some sloppy mistakes in the original posting (sorry, ws trying to be as quick as possible).
Keep refreshing throughout the night, as details and any other info become available they will be added into this post…
Jcrown– Yes, sir, it is. I was particularly proud of my line “Most Giants fans will expect C.C. Brown to get his walking papers as soon as the ink is dry on Rolle’s contract.”
Because, you know, I’m a giants fan and that ink is drying baby…
How do you feel if you’re a Cardinals fan and you just lost Dansby, Boldin and Rolle in about 6 hours?
And Matt Leinart is your quarterback?
Not to mention that their starting QB is a HUGE question mark heading into bext season.
Yo, I’m totally down with this pickup!!! The days of C.ant C.over du-du Brown are in the past!!! Now as long as the diesel doesn’t drop Canty 20 yards back into coverage, we should be able to even use FF55 at MLB (no disrspect FF). This is exciting news, but who will be our backup QB now that Carr is looking ike he’s in gear todrive now?
Its official… the Cardinals will not be good in 2010.
Finally, I can go to sleep in peace. I will have dreams of our opponents wide receivers soiling their uniforms. They will grow alligator arms with the very real fear of doom patrolling the secondary. Is it easier to just drop the ball or let the other guy catch it, then having to worry about my skull imploding from a raw violent hit over the middle. But like I said it was just a dream…………
Grab Morrison from the Raiders then we can take best player available come draft..
Haha, check out TT’s tweet (I think it’s him):
RT: @tdeuce4: Welcome rolle- now can 4 #NYG DB’s get to da pro bowl- its gone b a fun year!!!
it is him
If Ross comes back healthy and plays to full potential…who starts? Ross or TT? Id lean towards TT but I dont think its as lopsided as a lot of people will think.
Please, lads, let’s not get TOO carried away here.
This is starting to remind me of the “this could be the greatest defensive front ever assembled” talk following the Boley, Canty & Bernard signings last year.
We all recall how that turned out…
norm,
I’m with you brother (see the end of the last thread). I just thought TT’s tweet was pretty funny, and kinda cool to see his new teammate excited to have him.
However, assuming no injuries, one would have to guess that the defense on the field in 2010 will be better than the one seen in 2009, especially in the secondary. Not too much of a stretch with CC, MJ and Dockery at nickel vs. AR, KP & AR/TT.
You also might appreciate the wishful thinking for the defense, which would allow the recently lacking-passengers anti-Killdrive bus to take on passengers again.
I know that’s right…well said norm.
Way to be a downer.
NJ_Giants Unless I’m missing something, Rolle’s deal isn’t the best ever for a safety. Bob Sanders (5 yrs, $37.5m, $20m guaranteed) and… #nyg
Adrian Wilson (5 yrs, $39m, $18m guaranteed) were better. But hey, Antrel’s making more than me. #nyg
LOVE this signing, Rolle will be HUGE for us. I really would hate to be a Cardinal fan right about now. I feel bad for Fitzgerald next season and good luck Matt Leinart!
Yeah, I’m not getting excited until I see something on the field. Last season has scarred me for life.
Who you tellin’… last season was tragic man,,felt like {Heavy diarrhea} in a traffic jam
Angel Lugo, my man, where you been…
Takin’ care of my son…tryin’ to keep a roof over my head for my kids, you know not tryin’ to be out on the streets.
First off, I am glad this is done! As stated, 2 guys from The U roaming around in the secondary…man, that’s sweet. Secondly, Ralph V is a huge doucher. That guy is always trying to rain on everyone’s parade…he sucks. I’m honestly super excited for this defense (barring injuries) to take the field next season.
Rolle Phillips
Thomas Webster
Sintim Rookie/FA/Goff Boley
Osi/Kiwi-Cofield-Canty-Tuck
That is a pretty tough front to me….
regarding Carr real quick and the comment made by Patrick Willis, what is he smoking? David Carr has more talent and a better arm then both ALex Smith, the old dude that also started for them last year combined. You give David Carr a good O-Line and a legit chance to start, he will be a good qb. The kid has a lazer.
This Rolle signing is really making me wish and hope that KP is back 100% and has a healthy year.
Starks– yeah we had a good laugh at pat willis expense earlier. Dude, you’re a great QB…but you’re paid to kill quarterbacks, not evaluate them!
Yeah I’m with you on the Rolle and KP duo. But this also really lessens the blow if KP is not KP when he gets back…
we now have two #21s at safety.
Swantonbomb– If Ross plays up to his potential throughout the preseason without getting hurt, I’d think he gets the job. It’s a close call, but Ross has seniority, which breaks any tie. Well, actually, I suppose Tom Coughlin breaks ties…
Antrel rolle played pee wee football with who???
And the answer is why he will be a perfect compliment to kenny…
Sean taylor
Thank you jerry
David Carr is vastly overrated by people on this site. He’s had two offseasons to start for someone and nobody wanted him so he came back to us. Please don’t try and feed me the BS that he actually wanted to come back and be a backup because it’s simply not true. And if it is (again, it isn’t) then it shows Carr doesn’t have the drive to be a starting QB in this league.
Alex Smith played pretty well for San Fran when he came in midway through the year. He had a couple of stinkers against Philly and Tennessee I think it was but that will happen. I don’t think he’s the next Montana but Carr isn’t much of an improvement, if he’s an improvement at all.
David Carr is way better than Alex Smith, even if the only reason is because Alex Smith is awful…
Carr is accurate, makes good decisions, and has the armstrength to get it done at this level. In his whole life he’s never had a decent shot. Smith has had a few…
Ok, I did just make David Carr sound like an Peyton Manning, but forgive me. Im tired. Ive been writing and reading about Antrel Rolle all day.
Still, he’s better than Smith…
Guys, the post is up, updated and final. Please refresh one last time. Some analysis on the numbers and some cleaned up mistakes. Thanks for being with us on a friday night…
And go find me a giants website, fan or pro, that has such a detailed reaction up as quick as we do here at G101….
Oh, you cant…that;s why you’re here at G101 :-)
Simon,
I think you’ve done a fine job today. Thanks for the effort.

Rosenhaus on the Phillips-Rolle connection
24 m ago By Tom Rock
Turns out Kenny Phillips is a big reason why Antrel Rolle signed with the Giants (five years, $37 million with $15 million guaranteed in case you missed it). But not exactly for the reasons you might think.
Shortly after the deal was finalized, agent Drew Rosenhaus – who, as we noted earlier, reps both Rolle and Phillips – was on Sirius NFL Radio and said that the relationship between the two safeties and products of the University of Miami helped bring Rolle to the Giants.
“Kenny was a big reason why Antrel has agreed to sign with the Giants and I think Antrel loved the idea of playing with Kenny,” Rosenhaus said. He quickly added: “Kenny’s going to make a compete recovery and we’re very optimistic about him doing that.”
It will be interesting to see how the Giants use the two safeties if, in fact, Phillips is able to play. In Perry Fewell’s turnover-focused defense, they should both thrive.
Rosenhaus also said the Cardinals made it very difficult for Rolle to leave.
“I can’t say enough about the Cardinals,” he said. “The Cardinals are losing some players here in free agency, but I can tell you they went toe-to-toe with the Giants. It wasn’t an economic thing. I believe it was more to do with the fact that Antrel wanted to be closer to home and is from the East Coast. A lot of times guys spend 5 years in one program and they want to try something different. There was nothing wrong with what the Cardinals did, just more so that the Giants and Antrel made a good fit.”
I’m not sure what Jerry Reese saw in Rolle and why so many Giants fans are ecstatic about this move.
There are two reasons for this move:
(1) Rolle is a great player
(2) The market
As far as I’m concerned, this move is more market based than Rolle as a player. He’s the best safety in a very scarce market.
Is he a great player? Definitely not.
This deal seems a lot like the Canty deal. Both are good players, but definitely not “franchise tag” players.
What did Rolle show Jerry Reese that he deserves such money?
He’s good against the run and is a decent ball hawk, given that he’s in the right position. Otherwise, he’s a minus defender in coverage.
If KP is healthy and good to go, then my worries are lessened and they form arguably the best safety duo, but Rolle alone as a player is worth 7 million.
Last sentence, Rolle alone as a player ISN’T worth 7 million.
Dude, trust me I am not a huge Carr fan but I just call it the way it is …..David Carr is not a great qb however he is better then ALex Smith, and the old dude that Alex Smith couldnt beat out in training camp….
Carr has a better arm then both, he is more mobile. Trust me on this if he was with a team that had a decent to good O line during his first few years, not saying he would be a Pro Bowler year in and year out, but he would have been a top 15-20 QB in this league, which is avg to decent. Something both Alex Smith and the old dude are not.
bpeter, I am with you on this…..I dont hate the move but I will reserve judgement on this signing, again much of our secondary success is directly related to the way our DLINE plays….much like every other team but it is espaically prudent with the giants because of our shitty LB play..
“What did Rolle show Jerry Reese that he deserves such money?”
maybe he saw this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5V8gkrJBs8
seen any safties on our team do that lately?
and not to mention 2:50 here :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9tGdHvoD5M
Who’s that stud LB, #58, making a great play on the game winning touchdown right around 2:30″?
Manning threw it in very tight double coverage.
Corner hounding underneath and safety up top. The only way Manning completes is if he throws it high which he did. If he throws it too low, the corner’s got it.
Give it to Rolle, he attacked the ball. And like I said, he’s a decent ball hawk.
But see him in coverage. See him try to cover Witten, Celek, Cooley. Let’s see how he does against DeSean Jackson when he’s running a post pattern or a go route.
This is, by far, the best signing in Giants Free Agency history.
It has, in fact, brought out some Angel Lugo. It’s a truly historic day.
Rolle is a marginal defender at best in coverage. And that’s being very generous.
Out of 64 safeties that played at least 50% of a team’s snaps, Rolle was ranked 50th out of 64th in coverage.
And please no highlight videos. Watch a highlight video of Osi and you’d think he’s the next Reggie White. Stop it.
Does the highlight videos show him when he blows a coverage? Though so.
Also, on comparing Rolle and our safeties last year. Reggie Nelson would look like Ronnie Lott compared to our safeties.
A better comparison would be comparing Rolle to Ed Reed, Polamalu, Merriweather, Byrd.
No, that’s not a fair comparison. Why would you compare him against the absolute best in the game? Cory Webster isn’t Darelle Revis, and no one’s asking him to be. Doesn’t change his value.
Believe me, if Ed Reed was 27 and a free agent right now, he would get way more than Rolle. Would that make you happy, or change your perception of Rolle’s deal?
Although, that was an excellent point about the highlight video…
now if ross can get healty
If Ross is healthy, we won’t have to worry about using Bruce Johnson or Dockery as our nickel.
Dockery’s gone…
bpeter– your argument is flawed. You say he’s not worth $7MM, unless you adjust for this market.
Well, jerry Reese didn’t sign him in a vaccuum
If you think he’s worth, say, $5MM. Well, the fact that he’s the only good available safety under 30 is worth at least a million, and the fact that we don’t have another viable, healthy safety has to be worth another million.
and there you go….$7MM….
SimonGC – How did my argument present itself that Resse signed him in a vacuum?
I understand the fact that we don’t currently have a safety worth a million besides KP.
I understand that our safeties were horrendous last year.
I get all that.
But 7 million dollars worth?
And is he the best safety?
What about Atogwe? He had a down year this year, but he’s proven himself over the years to be pretty solid in coverage.
And you know that it would’ve cost the Giants? Nothing, because the Rams tendered him the lowest offer and they only have the right to refusal. No draft picks, none.
I understand that there’s a great need, but the Giants overpaid for a good player. What did he prove as a player to be worth that much?
Rolle is one of the best safeties out there in a severely limited market, but even so, is he worth it?
Also, was it the best option? Wouldn’t it have been a better option to invest that money and add in a big more to a proven player like Dansby and draft a safety?
Or like I said before, isn’t Atogwe, who’s proven defender in coverage a better option?
My picks for 15 would be 1)Weatherspoon 2) Price 3) McClain 4) Spiller 5) Kindel 6) Trade down. Typing on the phone so i could be missing some other players.
Highlight reels and you using PFF’s rankings like they’re some sort of undeniable truth are just as bad.
BTW did you see the Taylor Mays interview where he said no teams talked to him about moving to LB? Just wondering.
Why do people want Kindle? We already have him on the roster. You might have forgotten about him because he was buried underneath Danny Clark’s tired ass but his name is Clint Sintim.
That’s some funny ish. Especially because it’s highly likely that some in the organization have, in fact, forgotten about Mr. Sintim. (Hint, he stands on the sideline with mouth open like sleeve of wizard.)
With the 15th pick in the 2010 draft the New York GIANTS select Rolando McClain, LB , Alabama.
I think it’s a lock with Miami signing Dansby.
The Broncos still pick before the Giants,
HAhahaha. Classic, my man. I had the same thought, that’s why I wrote about it up top:
“Before we start with the insinuations that this all means that Giants are targeting Alabama’s Rolando McClain in the draft (although, Miami’s acquisition of Dansby increases the likelihood that McClain slips to 15), let’s face facts: the Giants’ big bucks moves on the first day of free agency are not in any way influenced by the hope/possibility that a top-ten talent MLB slips to them in late April.”
I love quoting my own shit….
You’re a smart man Simon =)
Troy is on a Rolle tonight. The PFF rankings don’t mean much (there’s a reason Jerry Reese gets paid more than the guy who does those rankings).
Yeah the Kindle thing is just stupid. I mean, if we didn’t already have Kiwanuka and Sintim I’d say OK. But come on…
Ive been saying for Months That Troy is one of my favorite posters and always has a Knack for leveling the board out with fact based well thought out posts that usually always hit the nail on the head
Just nitpicking here but Rolle is 27, he will not be 33 when this deal runs out. He will just of turned 32 at the seasons end. (December birthdate).
Is anyone concerned that Webster will be able to play in the Tampa 2?
a little. but i think they’ll try to put him in as many man situations as possible. he has to learn the zone
So………..who will wear 21 next season?
Phillips will
Antrel will wear 26 (if rouse is cut) or 32.
6 was rolles college number so maybe 26
Good.. I hope so. I have a KP Authentic…LOL
Los– Yeah I realized that, and honestly, was too lazy to change it. Figure’d I’d wait till it got pointed out. now I have to go and change it…
Not really concerned about Webster.
Heh, gotta love that you crossed out the “33″
SimonGC – How did my argument present itself that Resse signed him in a vacuum?

I get all that.

Or like I said before, isn’t Atogwe, who’s proven defender in coverage a better option?
Troy – Not saying that PFF rankings are written in stone. I think it’s laughable that they have Kerry Rhodes ranked so darn high.
They aren’t right on everything and not even close. But are you suggesting that he’s a good defender in coverage?
Is he ranked too low. Yes.
But is that far from the truth? No.
People have to remember that we’re witnessing a shift in the NFL’s economy. How many times over the past 3 or so years have we heard “X player is now the highest paid x position in NFL history”? The answer is a lot. And that will not be changing anytime soon I don’t think. Remember when Big Ben was the highest paid QB of all time? Now it’s Eli. Remember when Bob Sanders was the highest paid safety in NFL history? Now it’s Adrian Wilson. Tommy Kelly was the highest paid DT in NFL history and now it’s Haynesworth. See where this is going?
You have to view the contracts being thrown around now in a different light. You can’t say “well he’s not the best x position so he doesn’t deserve that amount of money.” It no longer works that way even though that way makes sense. This is how the NFL works these days, it’s time to get used to it.
TroyThorne – You bring up an excellent point and that just furthers my argument.
I understand that markets shift and that a year or two from now, someone else would be paid more than Rolle.
But you bring up an excellent candidate in Tommy Kelly. How’s that going for the Raiders?
I understand that each year, this current free agent corp will get paid more than the previous. And it’s a cycle that keeps on going.
But like I said, how’s Kelly paying off? Dare I say, worth it?
Just because markets shift doesn’t mean to have to pay more for garbage. There were other feasible options for the Giants.
You know ehat is really funny is that one really smart poster pretty much nailed this 5 yr 35ish million dollar deal about 6 hours ago..Man that guy is smart:-)
the guy cant spell worth a lick though…
Last year qbz had a rating of 69 when throwing at rolle. I don’t even wana kno michael johnsons smh. True the market forced us to pay more but atleast we have 2 quality safetys both with potential to be great. And umm rolle made the pro bowl last year. That’s hard to do when you play in arizona from that positin if ur not adrian wilson
bpeter – I think he’s above average in coverage. He’s not great but he’s not bad either.
Hey, I’m with you, bpeter – as anyone who’s logged on to this site within the past 24 hours is already aware. While the prospect of signing Rolle had stimulated a collective hard-on amongst my G101 brethren, I was busy looking for the Viagra.
But now that it’s a done deal, I guess it’s time to turn the page and reflect upon the sage wisdom of Brian. No, not McCoy but Brian Cohen – he of the “Life of Brian” – who famously sang “Always look on the bright side of life.”
So in that spirit, here’s one curmudgeon’s positive, uplifting take on this news:
• I very much like the fact that Reese was able to pick up one of his targeted free agent safeties without giving away any picks in the upcoming draft. To me, this makes a LOT more sense than, say, giving a second rounder to Buffalo for Wilson – another possibility that had been widely discussed here. While Wilson may, in fact, be the slightly better player, I’d still prefer to opt for the lesser talent if it allows us to keep the pick. This is the same reason I’m opposed to signing Morrison. I think we can use that third rounder to get someone who will ultimately be better.
• The Rolle signing all but assures that Reese won’t spend the #15 pick on either Thomas or Mays – two prospects that left me largely unexcited. This really gives the Giants the flexibility to go BPA at 15 without worrying about whether doing so would leave one of our biggest needs unfilled. Nor does it rule out the possibility of Reese fishing for a safety prospect in Rds 3 or 4 who can serve as depth this year and eventually push Rouse or Johnson off the roster.
• Lastly, I was heartened to learn that Reese was able to construct this deal in such a way that ensured Rolle would NOT emerge as the highest paid safety in the NFL. Maybe that distinction meant little or nothing as far as the Giants themselves were concerned. Nonetheless, I had a real problem making someone who I scarcely regard as elite as the highest paid player at his position. Moreover, given the market, the Giants desperate need at safety, and the fact that we were negotiating with Rosenscum, the fact that Reese was able to strike a 5-year deal with just $15 guaranteed is just short of a minor miracle. Well played, sir.
So while the acquisition of Rolle doesn’t really thrill me in and of itself, I find myself more or less happy with the state of things based on the three points listed above. And if Rolle turns out to be more than just an adequate upgrade over last year, well, I’ll be as giddy as the rest of you are now.
Glad you coult put a positive spin on what was abviously a difficult day for you Norm.
TroyThorne – Look at what Atogwe and Gibril Wilson get in this market and we’ll determine if that deal was prudent.
As far as I’m concerned, I have (ranking):
Atogwe
Rolle
Wilson
As for Kelly, well, look who gave him that deal lol. Kelly is the extreme when it comes to massive contracts. A below average player who got elite player type of money. Rolle is an above average player who got elite type money. But the money he got will only be considered “elite” for about another 2 offseasons.
TroyThorne – Where would you put Rolle as far as Atogwe and Gibril Wilson are concerned?
Equal to or less than Atogwe and way better then Gibril
demo3356 says:
March 5, 2010 at 1:06 pm
I think JR gets this done for either a backloaded 5 yr $35-$40 or 6 yr $42-$48 million back loaded deal
First 3 years are supposed to pay him $22.5 million.
sounds about right with a big chunk of that being a signing bonus and the actual cap numbr for 2011 and 2012 being favorable
TroyThorne – My point is this:
Most of the players that got the new “elite” deal got it because they were worth it.
Remember Nate Clements’ deal with 49er’s? He was a proven corner.
Albert Hanesworth? Unstoppable force.
Eli? Got that ring, Baby
These people have credentials. Whether or not they’re the best is debatable, but they have their credentials.
What has Rolle shown us?
he’s shown us enough to merit a 5 yr 37 million dollar deal..
healthy KP and Rolle make a very solid Safety combo with MJ and Rouse as very solid back ups. CC Brown will be relagated to what he does best, playing solid special teams and getting toasted by our WR’s in practice..
demo3356 – Equal to or less than Atogwe and way better then Gibril.
Agree with that assessment.
Gibril has fallen off quite a bit, since his times with the Raiders and Dolphins.
Loved Gibril while he was here, but the last 2 years have shown how much he benefited by playing behind arguably the best / hottest Defensive line ever.
I dont know if comparing Rolle to Gibril is a fair assessment. Gibril’s strenth was always playing in the box and making taclkes. From all I have seem and heard of Rolle, this is not his strength, but rather he is more of the, as much as I hate the term, ball hawking, traditional fs who matches up well in coverage and makes plays on the ball. In fact, of all the utube clips posted on him on here in the past few days, I’m yet to see the guy make a single tackle, let alone a bone jarring hit
bpeter,
Here’s one point you’re missing in your argument that Rolle isn’t worth the money with Atogwe sitting out there with only a right of refusal from the Rams:
The right of refusal from the Rams.
Let’s say the Giants go after Atogwe. Let’s say the Rams take their time in deciding to match. Let’s say Rolle signs elsewhere. Let’s say the Rams decide to match the offer. Then the Giants have no one.
Bingo
And, as pointed out many times, given the market price, it is what it is – you gotta pay what the market will bear to make sure you end up with at least someone.
Rolle :
“I’m ecstatic,” Rolle said after signing his contract around 11:15 p.m. “Words can’t really express how I feel now. I had five great years with the Cardinals organization. But I felt it was time for a change. The Giants are a first-class organization all the way. There are great opportunities for me, and I am excited to be working with the players I’ll be working with. I think the sky’s going to be the limit as to what we can do. “I’m extremely excited for the opportunity, and I feel truly blessed. They have the confidence I can come in and be the player that they expect me to be, and I will live up to everything they expect and go beyond.”
My personal rankings would be:
1a. Atogwe
1b. Rolle
467. Wilson
Is Rolle a top 10 safety? No. But the amount of money he’s making is trumped by Big Al, Eli, and all those other guys. Also, remember that he’s only been a safety for 2 seasons and he got better from one season to another. That’s promising for the future.
Lol 467…He’s at least top 250:-)
Oh and let me be the first to admit I was wrong in my belief that we wouldn’t sign anyone “of note”.
(Of course, it is always nice to be proven wrong when the results are so delightful.)
Dirt – One fact that you’re missing out.
Which teams were really in the running for Rolle?
Bears, Dolphins, Giants
Bears – Sign Peppers, no money for Rolle
Dolphins – Dansby, sorry Rolle
Hmm, one team left.
Was there any other emerging team out there pacing the Giants and offering Rolle 5 years 37 million?
So Rolle would most likely still be on the market if the Giants didn’t sign him.
Also on Atogwe. I’m not sure sure the Rams would’ve matched 5 years for 7 per. They have much more pressing needs.
And don’t forget the fact that they’ve got the 1st overall pick and Clausen or someone else is in for a big payday.
I doubt the Rams would’ve matched the Giants offer.
I’m not sure if you saw the tweets/news feeds, but there were numerous reports about Arizona making a last minute pitch to keep him and Rolle giving Arizona that opportunity. You left Arizona out.
And, who are you and I to evaluate the bank accounts of the Bears and Dolphins in this uncapped year? It’s not like the Bears are particularly saddled with mega contracts. Peppers, yes, but who else? Who’s on the Dolphins making huge money? And now in Arizona, who’s making huge money?
TheBlueScreen: Also said Cards “went toe-to-toe” with Giants. In fact a source said Cards matched Giants offer. Rolle preferred #NYG.
I’d also add that Rolle has made himself a Pro Bowl and was a contributing piece to a team that made two Super Bowl runs in 2 years whilst at safety, whilst Atogwe hasn’t made himself a Pro Bowl in 5 years and was a contributing factor to one of the worst teams in football in his career.
Not holding the Rams performance against Atogwe, but, Rolle isn’t necessarily the worst safety of all time, and he certainly compares.
very happy with the signing! very very happy to have 2 ballhawks back there! what number will he be wearing?lol
we betta get a MLB in the 1st…mclain/spoon!
Demo– Glad you woke up.
Bpeter– Umm, the difference betwen Atogwe and Rolle isn’t talent or money, it’s the draft picks attached to them. Giving someone a second or even third round pick is a huge price, particularly when that player will cost the same amount when he gets to NY and starts negotiating his new contract.
we make any more moves this FA? any good kickers out there
After they kicked the tires on Folk, I’d expect they bring in someone to compete with Swank and Tynes in camp. Wonder if they’ll draft one….
I say eff it, draft one. Usually the team that does gets the pick of the litter. And if we have no qualms about drafting bum quarterbacks in late rounds, why not get a kicker with a strong leg who’s made big conference, pressure kicks?
Hey guys, final edit is up. Broken up into easy to read sections with some updates… God I’m tired. Enjoy this, and thanks for being here to share this momentous occasion with us on G101.
Someday you can tell your Grandkids you were on G101 when Antrel Rolle got signed….
SimonGC – No draft picks attached to Atogwe.
Let me reiterate. He’s got the lowest tender from the Rams, meaning that they get no compensation at all. However, they have the “right of first refusal.”
Big difference if the Giants also had to fork over picks, but that’s not the case. And if they had to, no point in giving Atogwe big money plus picks.
But that’s hardly the case.
Regardless of your thoughts on the move, are you prepared to look at it from the standpoint of a fan of his yet? I mean, he’s a part of the team now. Do you think he makes the team better?
I can’t speak for bpeter.
But I was probably more down on the idea of signing Rolle than bpeter – and took a lot of crap here over the past 24 hours for voicing my objections.
Yes, it does represent an upgrade at safety (just how much remains unclear) but I’m still a bit concerned about the long term ramifications. So I’m still all not THAT thrilled now that it’s a done deal. But I did make the effort to see the silver lining and shared my thoughts along those lines in my 11:42 pm post.
So, yeah, I guess you can say I’m cool with it. Not in an over the moon sort of way but more of a “best of some tepid options” kinda way.
So, it’s done. I am now on board 100% and hope he is as good as JR and Mara think he is. With that hole plugged, I eagerly await information on our plans to fill the other 2.
Dirt – Money aside, I do like the though of Rolle and KP roaming around our secondary.
I do think he makes the team better than the garbage safeties that we’ve had. And like I said before, KP and Rolle may pose as the best safety tandem in the NFL.
I do like the fact that he’s a ball hawk and if there’s an interception to be had, more often than not, he’ll make it. I’ve seen too many players on our secondary drop sure interceptions.
I also like the fact that he attacks the ball, as seen in the Eli Manning interception. He acted like a WR and went after the ball, something that was terribly lacking last season.
And he can cover a lot better than Can’t Cover Brown or any other starter we had.
Aside from the contract, I’m glad he’s a Giant.
Final update in there with full contract details from Florio…
Bpeter– It’s going to cost picks for Atogwe. Rams won’t let him get away for free….
We give him an offer sheet, they tell us they’re willing to match, we have 7 days to come up with trade compensation or they match. When you’re done dealing with that…Rolle the only easily obtainable viable solution is gone.
Reese basically had to do this deal, even if it cost a few million too many.
Well, now that I’ve seen the contract details I’m happy to see that Reese stuffed ten of the guaranteed 15 million into this first, uncapped year.
Worst case scenario, if Rolle turns out be a complete disaster, the Giants could cut him without incurring too much of a cap hit – regardless of how the next CBA might look.
Smart move and one that mitigates many of my concerns about some possible long term ramifications of this deal.
I doubt very much that Rolle will be a disaster, in fact I think he will earn his money. But I am with you, I’m glad they gave the details and we can see it’s mostly an illusion. I agree that this was a smart move.
i jus want the MLB now! now that the rolle deal is done…lets get the MLB and then ill be very happy with the offseason
Any ideas on who the G-men should target for MLB in free agency now?
Draft Brian Price.
Mclain/Spoon!
SimonGC – From what I’ve heard and read, the Rams offered him the lowest tender:
1. If they offered him the highest tender (which he deserved), no team would give up at least a first for him. Then, they’d have to pay him more than $7 million.
2. They gave him the lowest tender, so that they can gauge him market value. If the price is right, then they sign him, if not they won’t.
“It’s going to cost picks for Atogwe. Rams won’t let him get away for free…”
Yes they will. Besides center, one defensive end position, left/right tackle, running back, and MLB, they need serious upgrade. They can’t afford to give Atogwe $7 million when they have other major pressing needs.
In order to force a trade compensation, the Rams would need leverage. What leverage do they have?
They don’t want to tie up $7 million to safety when they have pressing needs at key positions, especially QB, offensive line, and defensive line. Every GM knows that.
So what leverage do they have?
Are the Rams going to say, we’re really, really, really going to sign Atogwe. We even swear that we’re going to do it.
The Rams have no inclination to tie up such money. If Atogwe was a QB or defensive end, or corner, or offensive tackle, then that’s a different story.
But $7 million when the team doesn’t even have a QB, offensive and defensive line, then they’re in Al Davis territory.
Also, the Rams seem pretty content with Craig Dahl and James Butler as their two starting safeties.
Those two are pretty serviceable safeties and they’re pretty cheap too.
Craig Dahl, surprisingly, had a good year.
seriously, why are we still talkin bout atogwe
Just continuing our arguments from before.
Anyway, onto the draft.
Looks like McClain may fall to the Giants after Dansby signed with the Dolphins.
But then again, come draft day, anything can happen.
oh ok…lol.
mclain has to get through denver some are sayin
It’s simple… take McClain… if Denver takes him before us then take Price.
Or Spoon…
I want a big time MLB in the first mcclain or spoon will do for me I’m worried about price not too sure sbout him
I too have ambivalent feelings about the Rolle signing. While he undoubtedly makes the team better, how much and at what cost? How good is Rolle? And was he good because of Antrel Rolle or because of Adrian Wilson?
But, he’s now a Giant so we must and will root for him and hopefully late next year someone will remind me of my misgivings when he has sniped his 7th pick of the season turning it into his 4thbTD!!
What Jim said lol I was thinking along the same lines Jim I just ant put it as articulate as you. Does he make us super worthy again? Is he a great tackler like a saftey should be? I hope he turns out as good as everyone here is saying I’m just not overly thrilled with this signing I am happy we filled a need. Now let’s draft our MLB for the next 10 years ( mcclain or spoon) yep I am on the spoonwagon lol who is driving? Lol
So when and where does the we told you so list start? For all of those arguing DT was our biggest need the fact we gave out such a big deal for a safety and flirted with the top MLBs shows DT was a 3rd tier need. Important dont get me wrong but first things were first. And Langan please dont come with that Ray Lewis quote/argument again. Of course DT was most important for the Ravens D and especially RL. It wasn’t just about their D it was selfish too. He wanted to run around free. Its easy to say you need a top DT when you already have one of the most impactful MLBs of all time and one of the best if not the best safetys of all time. They had all the other holes filled. Now DT moves up to a top 1 need but it was important to wipe either S or MLB off the list before the draft so one of those two and DT could be targeted. Now a McClain or Price would be a great target. Love McClain but I’m kinda leaning towards taking one of the top fat guys OL or DT since Brandon Spikes looks like he’s be there for the taking in RD 2.
“top 1 need” should say “top need”
I would imagine that if all the good DT free agents hadnt been resigned or franchised then the team would have pursued the options to fill that need too. When there was noone worth looking at, then there was no point.
I agree with you about DT being the third need, in fact DL was third need. Safety and LB were one and two, in that order in my opinion. The upcoming draft has a lot of high quality safeties, the Giants should grab another by round 2 and get a top 4 or 5 overall safety to work with Phillips and Rolle. Chad Jones in the 2nd round is a steal. It was take something astronomical to have the safety position be less then acceptable this season with this group of guys. Phillips (healthy), Rolle, Johnson & Jones. Release CC Brown & Aaron Rouse and wish them both luck. Good guys but didn’t fit into the system.
The big question right now is who will be the defensive general and who will be the new MLB. I look for the Giants to give this area a double tap as well. I see them getting a veteran MLB through free agency and also drafting a MLB in the upcoming 2010 draft. They will surely do this with the safety position.
L56tfan – where was the major DT in free agency that was worth going after? It’s not that saftey was the biggest need it’s just that there was no major Dt in free agency to give that money to. If Albert from the skins was free this offseason u think the giants would go after rolle first?
This is clearly and upgrade with Rolle. Now we need to focus on MLB. Who is in line for that spot and worth looking at guys? GIve me your top 3 Please.
1. Mclain
2. Spoon
3. Spikes
really hard to choose btw maclain and spoon
I am not a violent person at all, but the next non-GIANTS fan that tells me Phillips’ career is over is going to get a kick in the shin and a punch in the face =)
Draft-wise at MLB… Spoon, McClain, Spikes… but I really want to see some sort of legit 40 times for McClain and Spikes. That could change everything.
Turk- LMAO
I’m headed to a full day of theater but just want to add that anyone who thought Reese would make a “cap-unfriendly” deal with Rolle was really in La-La Land. This happens to be a fine deal for the Giants as well as Rolle. With $10MM in the uncapped year and about $15.25MM in the “out years” 4-5 when Rolle will have either proven himself worth it or find himself released, this isn’t all that expensive for a quality player. All that crying about cost was misguided.
I think the draft sets up beautifully now. The two defensive positions that could use shoring up over the next two years (and remember, a rookie will not be playing much until the second half of 2010, if then) are DT and LB. There are great choices there who could be added to a rotation of Canty and Cofield and Alford, and to the current set of linebackers.
Since there may be two elite linebackers available at #15 (Weatherspoon and McClain, in that order IMHO) and none beyond the possibility of Spikes in the 2nd (and I have a feeling he won’t get to #46 and Reese knows that too), that would be an obvious direction. They can get a very good DT after the first round (I very much like Odrick and Alualu, as I have been saying for months).
But there are also some awfully attractive options at running back and on the O-line, and it would not surprise me at all, as I have been saying for quite some time, if Reese goes there in April. He can now do that, and that’s the element in this trade that some of the naysayers were just not “getting”. By solving the need at safety Reese completely opened up the draft. Putting a dollar value on that isn’t simple, but I’m sure it’s worth a lot more to the team in the long run than the extra few millions Reese added to the guaranteed portion of Rolle’s contract beyond what his true worth was. A great manager looks at the overall picture, not just the small portion he’s dealing with at the moment.
great post FF55er. I am pretty sure I told all those crying that this is how it would wor out. It’s amazing how little faith some have in our front office
Outside of another FA acquisition, there’s not much doubt that our first pick will be one among McClain, Spoon, Spikes and Price. I’ve seen mocks that have us go after Mays, Kindle or St. Pierre. Mays still wouldn’t be an awful pick because he’d be given time to develop and learn the play NFL safety without being thrown to the wolves; Kindle being a possibility if we feel comfortable with Goff at MLB. I’ve even seen us taking TE Greisham. But at the end of the day, we will take one of those 4 guys. The fun part will be seeing how many of them are actually on to board when we pick. I can actually imagine the frenzy that will envelope G101 if all or most are within reach.
My God. Did anyone realize that Morrison recovered EIGHT fumbles last season? That’s a crazy statistic.
get these things in the new stadium…
The Japadog — a hot-dog-style bun with a variety of exotic fillings — has had much positive exposure from Canadian, U.S. and international media during the Olympics, and celebrities such as Steven Seagal and rapper Ice Cube gave Tamura’s zesty creations two thumbs up.
Japadog kiosk owner Noriki Tamura is so encouraged by those incredibly long lineups in downtown Vancouver for his enormously popular Japanese sidewalk creations that he plans to set up shop in New York.
Does anyone have a feel for how good/bad/mediocre Morrison is?
Hes a good young player…been the best player (behind Asam…however you spell it) on a bad defense for a while now. And from everyhing ive seen of him during interviews, he seems like a good locker room guy too
Krow- I personally cant too excited about the MLB on a team that was dead last or in the bottom 5 in rush defense almost every year he has started…
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/124080-raiders-linebacker-kirk-morrison-a-liability
After reading that krow, i would say no to Morrison. We don’t need anymore soft, bad tackling LBs. And the article said he was a downgrade from Danny Clark… Yeah, that’s not a typo, he really said that..
haha- GMTA!
Ugh..Not encouraging..
For four years now, the Raiders have patiently waited for Morrison to become a monster in the middle, which they expected going into the 2006 campaign after releasing Danny Clark.
The Raiders thought Morrison, being younger and a tad bigger, could give the defense that extra push. He didn’t. Turns out Clark leaving didn’t help the Raiders much, but hurt them
It all makes SENSE now! I didn’t know Clark was from the Raiders. That’s why he sucks!
all the more reason not to trade a 3rd rd pick for the guy that was a downgrade from him
Yup. But rest assured, Tom Coughlin is probably trying to bring this schmuck in!
Man, I have no idea who the hell this Morrison is but I’ll repeat what the questioned I posed yesterday for the people on here clamoring for the Giants to send away our 2nd or 3rd pick to the Raiders: does he represents that much more of an upgrade over Goff or what McClain, Spikes and Weatherspoon would provide? Because, honestly, based on the descriptions and comparisons (Someone said he was a “younger Antonio Pierce.” Is that what we want?) I’ve heard on here, I am not sold on him bringing us anymore value than what those draft picks could bring. Put his contributions alongside someone like Blount or John Jerry or Alualu or Odrick could have and you will see my point.
I’m not interested in sifting through the refuse of the Raiders. He may be a fine MLB, but he’s not worth giving up a shot at drafting an impact runningback or defensive tackle or offensive guard.
Yeah… I did a little searching and came up with that damning article. It’s only one opinion, but it’s sure a bad one.
Krow / 12 DanS- did either if you get a queezy feeling reading that article that Danny Clark could be viewed by his BFF Coughlin as a posibility at MLB? At least for a second or two?
I just vomited in my mouth. Thanks Demo.
Danny Clark is like that ghost from “The Ring”… it just keeps coming… and you know it won’t end well.
David Carr moves closer to signing with the 49ers, a highly-placed league source tells Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, “It’s the 49ers’ to lose.”
Linebacker Patrick Willis has launched an anti-Carr campaign on his Twitter page, per Maiocco.
“We have three quarterbacks that are better than [Carr],” Willis says. “That’s a waste of time.”
He also says that, if the team is going to get another quarterback, it should “spend money on a difference maker,” and Willis specifically points out Mike Vick.
Wow… who’d have guessed that Patrick Willis was this big a dou’chebag?
Willis just wants to win… And he feels like Carr wouldn’t help the team do that. But like you said Hes being a doucebag lol
And no word on Kampman yet ?
last I heard he was in Jacksonville and I hope he signs there. I want absolutely nothing to do with an aging DE coming off a major knee injury. Sorry, I had enough of that last year with Osi, Robbins and Coefield all playing WAY below their normal level of play.
Heres another couple of points I wanted to make to all those crying about Rolle and how much he is getting paid.
First, is he probably getting over paid a tad bit for what he’s done so far in his career? Probably, but I believe JR and his pro scouting department probably saw how much better he’s gotten in his 2 seasons at FS and believe that he will only get better, especially if our pass rush returns to form.
Secondly, if he is really a $5 million a year type player AT THIS POINT in his career, but is a signifigant upgrade over every other option on our Roster, and ensures we will never see CC Brown in coverage again, isnt that worth the extra 1-2 million a year?
Finally as Troy put it so brilliantly last night, those who point out the Cards defensive struggles in the playoffs vs 2 of the most explosive offenses in the NFL and link that to Rolles value as a player are showing that you know NOTHING about football, especially defense. I wont go any further into that, as I couldnt possibly make the point any better then Troy did lat night
You know… if we don’t sign another FA I’m happy. We addressed one of our crying needs. Is Rolle wonderful? Well no… but he’s damn good. And that’s a big upgrade at that position. This also leverages the draft… and makes it much more likely that we’ll get quality in rounds 1 & 2 by taking some of the ‘need’ pressure off. Did we pay too much? No… we paid what it took to get him.
Having said that… I was awakened last night by a scream in the distance… which I later found out was Osi. Seems that any time a player other than himself gets paid he howls at the moon.
LOL! I still thin there is a chance he gets moved by or during the draft for a couple of picks..I dont want to see him go, I just have a feeling he might..Tuck and Kiwi at DE with Toelfson, Canty and Sintim all taking snaps there is pretty solid. Also if he goes for a late 1 early 2, I could see JR grabbing one of the freakish Athletes at DE in the draft
Krow, that was a beautiful. Both the thinking on Rolle (absolutely correct) and the Osi thing….
I like that my Osi trade cart and buggy is gaining ridership…
said this to Dan on facebook yest morn at 8:56:
Anthony Raia
Hahaha. I think playin a fellow hurricane back there brings him. I really think that
looks like i was right hahaha.
Giants waive rouse, why not CC?
Aaron Ross and Sanya Richards were married on Feb. 26 by the Rev. Wesley Green in front of about 500 guests at Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin, Tex.; yellow and pink roses adorned the altar.
The groomsmen included Giants teammates Ahmad Bradshaw, Corey Webster and Michael Johnson, along with Tarell Brown of the San Francisco 49ers, who described Mr. Ross, his friend from their days on the Longhorns, as a “very humble, hardworking guy.”
Other guests included Roy Williams of the Dallas Cowboys, Derrick Johnson and Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Olympic track athlete Carl Lewis.
I’m mixed about Osi. I’m not sure he’s all that good. He may have benefitted from the Strahan effect. But I sure could be wrong… so I’d hate to see us lose THAT player. However his pouting is getting on my nerves. He’s NOT underpaid… and he’s NOT played very well the last 2 seasons.
I also think that he’ll go FA when his contract is up… then we get zippo.
If the right deal was there then yeah… bye bye… or if we sign Kampman. If not then I hope he returns to form… time will tell.
now im feelin antrel as number 26
Wow Giants cut Rouse! Why not keep him and Let CC Brown go? WTF?
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2010/03/rolle-in-rouse-out.html
Just a few hours after signing free-agent safety Antrel Rolle to a mega-deal, the Giants have parted ways with safety Aaron Rouse.
Rouse was waived this morning, according to a team spokesman, along with first-year pro DB Londen Fryar. Rouse joined the Giants early last season after Kenny Phillips was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. He ended up starting eight games.
Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/#ixzz0hPbL4xpq
Both are going… better for Rouse now who could catch on somewhere. CC Brown is dogmeat.
yea cc will be gone after training camp and a ps player will make the team at 4th safety (if we carry 4)
Where is that genious at now that I argued with last season who said that loosing Kenny Phillips was and I Quote (A BLESSING IN DISGUISE) because it allowed us to sign Aaron Rouse? Where is he at now? A Menza meeting?
when criticizing others’ intelligence, it is wise not to misspell “genius” and “Mensa” ;)
thats crazy though, rouse better than phillips
LOL! Good point man…Well played…
The market not a bunch of fans who think they know more than the rest of the world determines a players value. If Arizona offers $38.5 million for 6 yrs and Miami offer $35 for 5 yrs the Giants paying $37 for 5 yrs is not over paying. It’s right in line with the market. Whether he’s the best in the game or not is irrelevant. This is a good start to fixing a very bad defense that destroyed our season last year.
couldnt agree more..I guess JR and Parcells are nowhere near as good of Football minds as some of the posters on this site:-)
I gotta give it up to Simon though, as much as I disagree with a lot of his Giant related ideas and his inexplicable desire to run our best OT out of town, His articles are as well written, detailed and well thought out as any NYG writer on the net anywhere.
Good work my friend!
I am pretty suprised at cutting Rouse though. While he is not a starting calibre Safety in the NFL, he is very solid depth, a decent in the Box Safety and a monster on ST’s..While signing Rolle really helps the top end of the Safety Depth chart, Loosing Rouse kind of hurts the bottom. Right now we have a very good Rolle, a very average MJ and a physical? in Phillips under contract. I wonder if this means JR will still Target Safety early (rds 2-4) in the draft?
I’m confused.
Although his coverage skills were crap, I thought Rouse was a pretty good “in the box” safety. Yeah, we had a buttload of those types on the team last year. But with the signing of Rolle, a ball-hawking centerfielder to play alongside KP – another ball-hawking centerfielder – you’d think the Giants would be more willing to overlook Rouse’s meagre coverage skills in order to retain one of the better box safeties on their roster.
errr – what Demo said.
LOL< I agree man and I figured that if in the nightmare scenario that KP is not 100% when next season begins, Rouse would be perfect compliment to Rolle..Maybe this is more sign that we are going to more of a Tampa 2 defense where run defense is strictly on the front 7 and the 2 safeties are each responsible for 1/2 the field deep?
c.c. brown is a better special teamer
indeed, but if the shit hits the fan injury wise and one of the 2 has to play safety for us, wouldnt you prefer Rouse to Cant Cover Brown?
Thought we overpaid for Rolle
Atlanta gave Dunta Robinson $57 million with 25.5 Guaranteed.
Wow…
lol
Perhaps the phonetic similarity between “Aaron Rouse” and “Aaron Ross” brought about one too many “senior moments” for the head coach, thereby necessitating Rouse’s release.
LOL could be…
Lol
I agree you still look at safety in rd 2/3 if one of the good ones are there. DT or LB rd 1. Still not a lock KP comes back healthy since he hasn’t even run yet. But what a duo he and Rolle would make.
Yeah id like to echo DEMO in saying that im pretty sure Bill Parcells and jerry Reese know some things about football………
Hey, credit where credit is due… Reese did phone me before making his final offer to Rolle just to make sure that the details were acceptable. had I not assured him that itr was, Rolle would be a Cardinal today.
The above post was meant to say: Thought we over paid for Rolle?
That was a question not a statement on my part lol
That deal, by the way, makes Robinson the richest corner in the NFL not named Asomugha.
More than Revis
More than Woodson
More than Stoney?
You must be mistaken!
norm- Understood.
I have to say im very surprised about the giants cutting rouse.. i mean he wasnt my favorite but i thought he def at least deserved a shot in camp definitly over cc.. didnt reese see how awful cc was all year? i mean if they both end up getting cut then fine but how can u cut rouse and not cc…
I wont complain tho im very happy we got rolle.. peppers isnt in the nfc east.. and the dolphins taking dansby gets mcclain one step closer to us =)
If Demo’s supposition is correct that the addition of Rolle signifies that our defense is going to the Tampa 2, then Brian Price should be the pick at 15. He’s the ideal DT for that style of defense.
Just sayin’…
yep Price would be a perfect fit for a Tampa2
My point was that Rolle’s addition PLUS Rouse subraction led me to believe we could be going the Tampa2 route. Rouse is a horrible fit in the Tampa 2.
I think That deal (Robinsons) along with Rolle’s, Peppers and Dansby’s shows that in an uncapped year with 226 less free agents than expected, teams are going to have to pay a premium for premium players…Luckily smart Gm’s like Reese put a big chunk into 2010 and make the 2011 and 2012 salaries fairly cap friendly. I believe we will see a HUGE drop-off in salaries paid out after Kampman and Sharper sign..Everyone else will be getting low ball or vet minimum deals. Also look for mad trades involving both RFA’s and expensive Vets on penny pinching teams to commence next week sometime. Once the quality UFA’s are gone teams will target the stud RFA’s with reasonable tenders and the cheap skate teams will look to take advantage of the lack of a salary floor and trade high priced vets for draft picks.
I think The Giants are gonna draft a DT or and offensive linemen with the first pick
I still think they go MClain at 15 if he is there…Maybe Spon, Price or Iupati if he is gone
I agreee wit demo however if they dont go mcclain i hope they go and get morrison.. i wouldnt mind if they got price but only if they had a mlb who can play bcuz i dont trust goff and our linebackers have been a weak spot of this d for too long
I really dont want to give up a 3rd rd pick in the deepest draft ever for the MLB on the NFL’s worst run defense..Especially after reading that the Raiders defense regressed after Morrision REPLACED DANNY CLARK… Man if that isnt a knock on a player I dont know what is:-)
hahaha damn i didnt know tht i change my mind ill stick wit mcclain
Rolle: We can be the best safety tandem in the league hands down
they could in a year or two if KP comes back 100% and progesses as a player the way we all believe he will and Rolle continues to improve as a FS…
Rolle said he plans to help Phillips along with his rehab down in Miami. “He’s never going to leave my side now.”
Ralph V…
Well fellas I am off for a fun filled day of Baseball and Baseball related activities. It is opening day at our Little League (my team is loaded) and then a holdem Tournament tonight to benefit our Travel Ball teams trip to Cooperstown. Hopefully I dont miss anyhing big today NYG wise and I will be back tomorrow..
BTW if we do sign Aaron Kampman you will hear me scream in anger all the way from Orlando FL:-)…
NO MORE DEFENSIVE PLAYERS COMINF OFF KNEE SURGERY!
I don’t want Morrison either. If we are switching to the Cover 2, he’s probably the worst possible fit you could possibly imagine. I’ll keep the picks and take McClain or Spoon come April.
Agreed. Those 2 fit us well.

Just finished listening to ARolle’s conf call w/media…last time I was this pumped by somebody’s opening remarks: TC’s intro press conf!
Swagger/Play making ability/leadership = worth every penny
Is the Rolle conference call available online anywhere?
David Carr is going to sign a two year deal with the 49ers today.
Godspeed, Mr. Happy Feet.
We hardly knew ye…
maybe Jeff Garcia
yep
David Carr-QB- Giants Mar. 6 – 11:33 am et
The 49ers and free agent QB David Carr are working on a two-year contract on Saturday.
Carr is scheduled to take a physical for the Niners today and it looks as if a deal should get hammered out. Carr made an average of $1.8 million per year in his two seasons as Eli Manning’s backup. He will likely battle Shaun Hill for the No. 2 spot in San Fran.

Strange move by the Niners.
Didn’t they draft that Nate Davis kid out of Ball State last year? From the reports I’d heard, they were very high on his upside. Even if you figure that Davis is no better than #3 on the depth chart, that still leaves you with a pretty decent backup in Hill – who Carr is alegedly competing with for the #2 job.
The only way this really makes sense is if the $9ers are looking to push Alex Smith out and thought Carr would be an upgrade at starter until Davis is ready to compete for the spot.
Start kicking around pssible backups: Sorgi, Delhomme, Hostetler, Brunner, Rutledge
How good of a tandem can Rolle + Phillips be? “The best in the league,” Rolle said. “Hands down.” #nyg
Rolle also said he’ll let Phillips keep #21.
(undecided on number still)
Says Fewell told him that he + Kenny Phillips will be interchangeable. Not traditional strong/free safeties.
Rolle met with Fewell. very impressed with him and are on the same page
Tom Coughlin on the Rolle signing: “The idea that this is associated with the Kenny Phillips situation is incorrect.”
UPDATE UP TOP
I have been TAD (traveling around drunk) to the naval air station in Washington DC. Have to fix yet another computer gone south.
The Rolle siging is wonderful. A good player by all accounts who fills a need and takes the pressure off of having to draft a ready to play safety. I think the way is clear to go after whatever the FO..IE Reese thinks is the most important position to fill with a player who projects to be a stater either by game one or mid season.
I really think that player will be a linebacker. Which one is the question. If McClain works out well at his pro-day on 10MAR
He could be gone. But it wont be Denver, they will be drafting a WR. Perhaps KC will be looking to take a top ten LB.
And what of Maima and Dansby? Everyone knows I like McClain.
However, I would not balk at Weatherspoon. Who ever is picked, I am sure that JR feels strongly that the guy can play, and can contribute this season…..early.
As far a DT goes, I think in the third or fourth round we can go very far wrong with the kid from ECU Joseph. He is a monster, and had big bench and squat number right out of high school.
If coached well, he has the power to be a factor in the middle of the defensive line.
The thoght of having the USC safety/LB still runs through my mind, becuase he is truly a hibryd player. A strong safety-will.
With him and either Spoon, McClain or Spikes the backer position would be in good hands. Then either an O-line or DE could go in round 4/5.
The next issue to be dealt with is Osi. How will it play out?

NY Giants waive safety Aaron Rouse
I think the team plans to sign another veteran safety who’s better, and probably also a rookie somewhere in rounds 2-4. There’s only likely to be one, maybe 2 roster spots for the safeties from last year (including KP).
Why cut Rouse, and not CC? I have no clue….sounds like a coin flip.. we do need a safety who can cover in the box. i would have gone with rouse but special teams is the difference.
