Free Agency On a Rolle

March 5th, 2010 at 1:54 AM
By Sean Carroll

Well it’s just about 2AM on Friday, March 5, 2010 and the NFL Free Agency has officially begun.  As expected, the bigger names are off to a hot start with Julius Peppers, Karlos Dansby, and others being courted by a number of teams.

As reported throughout the day on G101, the New York Giants have taken a liking to former Arizona Cardinal, Antrel Rolle.  Also in the running for Rolle’s services have been the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins, however, it seems things have changed…if only a tiny bit…in the favor of the Giants.

According to ProFootballTalk.com:

“With the Bears’ having swinging for the fences for Julius Peppers, we’re hearing Chicago has dropped out of the Antrel Rolle sweepstakes.

Rolle is seeking to make $8-million-per-season, which would make him the highest paid safety in the league.  That was deemed too rich by the Bears.”

So the Bears are more or less deciding to focus on snatching up Peppers from the evil talons hands of Dan Snyder and the Redskins.  Is this a formal passing on Rolle?  No.  But it does seem that Chicago will not be chasing him any further.

But, of course, it’s not always as easy as that.  Per the South Florida Sun-Sentinal,  the Miami Dolphins are going to make the Giants earn it:

“According to another source, the Dolphins offered the safety a five-year contract Thursday evening, shortly after the Cardinals released him to avoid paying a $4 million roster bonus. However, the Dolphins’ offer was under the $8 million per year Rolle is seeking. The New York Giants are expected to offer that much when Rolle is expected to visit Friday morning.”

So, assuming the Giants believe Rolle is worth the required funds, they will meet with the Safety tomorrow and look to have him locked into Big Blue by the time he leaves East Rutherford.

G101 will have Giants FA coverage starting early tomorrow morning, and throughout the coming days and weeks.  So keep it here!

NFC East Note:

While Peppers’ agent Carl Carey is calling the potential deal, the Bears’ “deal to lose”, he interestingly followed-up by saying that the Philadelphia Eagles are the former Carolinian’s fallback.  This is far from likely as it seems the Bears will go through hell or high water for Peppers, but interesting just the same.

Im actually for the Rolle signing, even if its at 8M a yr. We desperately need a S, as well as a LB, DT and maybe some OL help. The draft wont fix all those problems and these little signings of canty and bernard arent going to do anything this year. Since we have such a pressing need, we are going to have to overpay a bit, which is normal in sports.

Not for nothing, but this kid was a first round pick and converted positions which couldnt have been that easy for him. Is he a great S? no , not by any means but he is a playmaker. The only playmaker we have on this team is tuck. We dont have any playmakers in our secondary. He causes interceptions, forces fumbles and can return them for TD – could be nice for us.

And idk why were making phillips out to be the next coming of Ed Reed – he didnt play his rookie year and his second yr he was injured. He was good in college but hasnt proven himself at this level yet. We need a S, sign rolle!

As much as I love Phillips, and am optimistic about him returning to 100%, your completely right, we dont have any ANY reliable safteys on this team. I dont care if you have all pros in the front 7 without two guys to be your last line of defense….desean jackson will love playing against us.

Several “tweets” this morning saying the Giants don’t think Dansby converts well to MLB in a 4-3.

The only Rolle I want is onion, or Myron.
Both are cheap & easy to discard if stale.
    C’mon 8MM for a failed CB to Safety…..
We have a need, no doubt, but a healthy, smart, durable
Darren Sharper @ 34 for 2 years is $$ more wisely spent, me thinks!

ps After watching NFL Network CLOWNS (Lombardi lite, LaCateen boy, the other Randy moss, etc) postulate on “midnight” signings and other HUGE moves. all there is this morning is BRANDON MANUUUMALUUNA or something. Even Dan Snyder’s holding onto his Benjamin’s.

    Holy Hype Batman.
    Rant over,

Despite a solid performance at the combine, Missouri LB Sean Weatherspoon opted to do a full workout at the Tigers pro day in hopes of improving on his performance. Weatherspoon, who was timed in an official 4.68 in Indianapolis was reportedly clocked in the low 4.5 range by at least a couple of scouts. Weatherspoon, though, did set a PB in the bench press when did 35 reps, one more rep than he managed in Indy where he had the second-best total among linebackers. By working out, Weatherspoon may have been trying to deflect some of the criticism he received during the combine for being a tad self-centered, not to mention annoying, with his trade-mark non-stop chatter

    From Adam Shefter:

With free-agent TE Brandon Manumaleuna agreeing to a five-year deal in Chicago, it frees the Bears to trade TE Greg Olsen.

Every team has to make allowances for the worst case scenario. They have to have a contingency plan in mind if one of their stars gets injured and is sidelined for a significant amount of time. This is the value of “back-up” players and those who occupy the practice squad. In the NFL, they are one snap away from being on the field during Monday Night Football. It’s the reason teams go after unknowns with potential and veterans with experience. Sure, it would be great if Patrick Willis’ backup was Ray Lewis. But that’s not necessary so long as the rest of your team is balanced and can adapt.

Those last two adjectives are words that haven’t been used to described the Giants in quite some time. Last year showed as that the myth of our infinite depth along the defensive line and amongst our cornerbacks was a monumental lie. We were exposed for having a thin secondary, held together by the hope for health. And, as often happens when one falls victim to hubris, our pride came back and bit us…hard. When KP went down, and while Ross languished on the sidelines, players who were never supposed to be on the field were, and disaster insued. Sometimes these times make people elevate their game and rise to the occasion; but the likes of CC Brown, Michael Johnson and Aaron Rouse did not. And, as the future of Aaron Ross and Kenny Phillips remains unsure, our coaches are again tasked with their prime objective: build this team sturdily. Fill the holes and correct the mistakes, chief among which is the failure to assemble a respectable group of safeties, particularly because we aren’t sure about KP. Are we really going to go into the season hoping, again, that the unforseen won’t happen to us?

Olsen is going to be a stud!

They have no Dline and no pass rush….

Osi for Olsen – man would I do that in a second. That would completely allow us to use a real 2 TE set and have some great big strong weapons on the line.

    I wish this was madden

  8. DocDoc says:

haha, just a thought. Dangle Osi to the Bears for Olsen, causing them to drop out of the peppers sweapstakes, which I think they loose anyway to the Snyder. Then again, the big spenders blow there wad during the season bc they dont have a complete team. Ending with Haynesworth stomping on every offensive linemans face one late fall day after practice.

  9. kujonicuskujonicus says:

    But alas it’s not.

We aren’t trading Osi for someone who would be a luxury and not a need.
