Well it’s just about 2AM on Friday, March 5, 2010 and the NFL Free Agency has officially begun. As expected, the bigger names are off to a hot start with Julius Peppers, Karlos Dansby, and others being courted by a number of teams.
As reported throughout the day on G101, the New York Giants have taken a liking to former Arizona Cardinal, Antrel Rolle. Also in the running for Rolle’s services have been the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins, however, it seems things have changed…if only a tiny bit…in the favor of the Giants.
According to ProFootballTalk.com:
“With the Bears’ having swinging for the fences for Julius Peppers, we’re hearing Chicago has dropped out of the Antrel Rolle sweepstakes.
Rolle is seeking to make $8-million-per-season, which would make him the highest paid safety in the league. That was deemed too rich by the Bears.”
So the Bears are more or less deciding to focus on snatching up Peppers from the evil talons hands of Dan Snyder and the Redskins. Is this a formal passing on Rolle? No. But it does seem that Chicago will not be chasing him any further.
But, of course, it’s not always as easy as that. Per the South Florida Sun-Sentinal, the Miami Dolphins are going to make the Giants earn it:
“According to another source, the Dolphins offered the safety a five-year contract Thursday evening, shortly after the Cardinals released him to avoid paying a $4 million roster bonus. However, the Dolphins’ offer was under the $8 million per year Rolle is seeking. The New York Giants are expected to offer that much when Rolle is expected to visit Friday morning.”
So, assuming the Giants believe Rolle is worth the required funds, they will meet with the Safety tomorrow and look to have him locked into Big Blue by the time he leaves East Rutherford.
G101 will have Giants FA coverage starting early tomorrow morning, and throughout the coming days and weeks. So keep it here!
NFC East Note:
While Peppers’ agent Carl Carey is calling the potential deal, the Bears’ “deal to lose”, he interestingly followed-up by saying that the Philadelphia Eagles are the former Carolinian’s fallback. This is far from likely as it seems the Bears will go through hell or high water for Peppers, but interesting just the same.

I hope Rolle comes for less than the insane $8MM ($7MM would be more fair) and I really hope Peppers becomes a Bear.
Chargers cut DT Jamal Williams, should the Giants be interested in him?
JW only has a year or two left in him.
If the giants wanna look at him, they should think bout cuttin rocky.I doubt they’d look though
Lol…why am I still up!
Before I hit the hay, I’ll repost this comment I made in the last thread. It pretty much sums up my feelings on the Giants involvement in this whole Corybantic circus known as the start of NFL free agency:

Jayzus… this is nuts.
It’s as if the Giant brass woke up one morning and decided that the real key to success in the NFL was to follow the same path that has served Snyder and the Redskins so well.
Only – in true NY Giants fashion – they choose to temper it with some of the trademark Mara fiscal restraint. “No we won’t be so loopy as to spend $100 million for the best DT on the market. We’ll just spend half that much for a 3-4 DE and HOPE that he can play DT.”
Now, with the Skins reportedly going balls to the wall to sign Peppers – arguably the cream of this year’s UFA class and an elite DE – the Giants pursue a much more “sensible” strategy of trying to lock up a player who – while he may be among the top safeties in this year’s class – is far from elite. “So, yeah, we just spent $8 MM on a guy who’s really not that special. But at least we didn’t spend as much as the Skins did for Peppers and we also got to make a big splash.”
Please. Just stop the madness.
Rolle is a much better player than you are giving him credit for and since you already admitted to not watching him play you should really stop saying how bad he is. And Pepper’s doesn’t even have the Skins in his top 2 destinations.
its 4am and im still up….fak tomorrow is gonna suck.
I really hope I wake up to Rolle signing with us.
I don’t want Dansby or Peppers. I don’t want Rolle unless its for $5.5 mil a year or less, which doesn’t seem likely. I really only want Atogwe, maybe Morrison. I’d be fine with McClain or Spoon in the first, a DT, OL or Best in the second and a safety in the third.
Had an interesting talk with an ex-season ticket holder (couldn’t swing the PSL’s) and he had a different take – which I think may sadly be the way we have to adjust our thinking from now on. I was telling him I thought Peppers, Rolle and Dansby would be cost prohibitive and he asked why. Basically he said “Who cares how much they spend on free-agents; its not my money – go get anyone who they think can help the team win; don’t even worry about the money”. Without the cap to worry about, I could’t think of a reasonable response to that. So tell me, why DO we care how much money the Mara’s spend on free agents?
